READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL, OPERATE OR SERVICE THIS
TEEL PUMP. PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS BY OBSERVING ALL SAFETY INFORMATION AND AD-
DITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WITH THIS EQUIPMENT. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH INSTRUC-
TIONS COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE! RETAIN INSTRUCTIONS
FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
Description
Teel rotary gear pumps have a limited self priming ca-
pability and use the simple principle of two gears ro-
tating in a closely fitted housing. With every revolu-
tion of the pump shaft a definite amount of liquid is
drawn into the pump through the suction port. Pump
can be used for spraying, recirculating, cleaning,
transfer, etc. Liquid temperature range is -40F. to
+210F. Material being pumped must be compatible
with pump construction.
Special Characteristics:
Models 1P765 thru 1P770 feature a bronze bearing
and are recommended for intermittent service or
continuous duty applications with low pressure
needs.
Models 1P771 thru 1P776 feature a carbon-graphite
bearing and are recommended for continuous serv-
ice high pressure applications.
Models 1P777 thru 1P781 are basically the same as
Models 1P771 thru 1P776. In addition, they feature
an adjustable relief valve which permits recircula-
tion of liquid to avoid damage to the pump when
temporary blockage of discharge line occurs.

All data based on test results pumping water at 70F. When pumpi ng a more viscous liquid a slower speed, a larger pipe size pump, and possibly a
larger motor should be used.
Genera/ Safety Information
1. Know t he pump appli cat i on, li mi t at i ons, and po-
tential hazards.
WARNING: DO NOT USE TO PUMP FLAMMA-
BLE OR EXPLOSIVE FLUIDS SUCH AS GAS-
OLINE, FUEL OIL, KEROSENE, ETC. DO NOT
USE IN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES. PUMP
SHOULD ONLY BE USED WITH LIQUIDS
COMPATIBLE WITH PUMP COMPONENT MA-
TERIALS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARN-
ING CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY
AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
2. Make certain that the power source (electric
motor or gas engine) conforms t o the require-
ments of your equipment.
3. Pr ovi de adequate p r o t e c t i o n and guar di ng
around moving parts.
4. Release all pressure wi t hi n t he system before
servicing any component.
5. Drain all liquids from the system before servic-
i ng.
6. Secure t he discharge li ne before starti ng the
pump. An unsecured discharge line wi ll whi p,
possibly causing personal i njury and/or prop-
erty damage or puncture!
7. Check hoses for weak or wor n condi t i on before
- each use, making certain t hat all connections
are secure.
8. Periodically inspect pump and system compo-
nent s. Perform r out i ne mai nt enance as re-
qui red.
9. Provide a pressure relief system o n pumps
whos e d i s c h a r g e li n e can be s h u t -o ff or
obstructed.
10. Personal Safety:
a. Wear safety glasses at all times when work-
ing wi t h pumps.
b. Wear a face shield and proper apparel when
pumping hazardous chemicals.
c. Keep work area clean, uncluttered and prop-
erly lighted replace all unused tools and
equipment.
d. Keep visitors at a safe distance fr om the wor k
area.
e. Make wor kshop c h i ld -p r o o f wi t h pad-
locks, master swi t ches, and by removing
starter keys.
11. Pump Drives:
a. Never use a ri gi d coupli ng between a pump
and its electric motor. Some degree of flexi -
bility must be allowed t o avoid excessive side
loading of the mot or and pump bearings.
Flexible coupli ngs should be rated for the
horsepower load and speed. Pumps should
not be di rectly dri ven by engines.
b. Assure t hat the pump and motor shafts are
properly ali gned. Mi sali gnment wi ll cause
unnecessary loads on t he pump and mot or
bearings.
c. For pulley driven pumps, a single Vz" (A or 4L
section) "V" belt is satisfactory for drive sizes
and speeds up t o 1 HP, 3450 RPM. For larger
drive sizes, double " V" belts are recom-
mended.

Installation
1. Locate pump as close to the fl uid source as pos:
sible, making the suction line as short and direct
as possible.
NOTE: Unit should be placed where it is protected
from the weather and extremes of heat, cold and
humidity.
2. Mount the unit on a solid foundation.
NOTE: It is very important that the pump be
rigidly mounted to a substantial base and that
alignment between the pump shaft and pump
driver be maintained. Pump misalignment is the
greatest contributor to gear and bearing wear
and must be avoided. Many pump mountings act
as noise amplifiers. A rubber pad underthe pump
base will help reduce the noise level.
3. Piping:
a. Suction: Avoid excessive lengths or number
of fittings and bends in the, suction line. It is
recommended that the same size pipe as the
pump ports be used or in cases requiring
lengthy piping that the next larger size pipe be
used. To aid positive priming a foot valve
should be installed below the liquid level at
the end of the suction line. If it is suspected
that solid contaminates may be present in the
liquid then a filter should also be placed in this
line. Al l fittings must be air and liquid tight.
b. Discharge: If a shut-off valve is required in the
discharge line consideration should be given
to providing a pressure relief for the pump. If
the pump does not have a relief valve it is
recommended that a Teel Model 1P786 Pres-
sure Relief Valve be installed for added pump
protection. Shutting off the discharge without
providing a pressure relief can cause extreme
over-pressures which can result in pump
damage and/or motor failure. Globe valves or
other restrictive valves should not be used as
the shutoff mechanism as they are restrictive
in nature and wil l seriously affect the pump
performance.
NOTE: Discharge piping may be one size larger
than suction piping.
4. Drive connections:
NOTE: Teel Rotary Gear Pumps wil l operate
equally well in either direction. When l ooking at
the pump drive shaft end and rotating the shaft
clockwise, the discharge port is on the right hand
side. When turning counterclockwise the dis-
charge port is on the left hand side.
a. Direct Drive: A direct connected pump to elec-
tric motor drive through a Lovejoy (or similar)
Flexible Coupling is recommended, to allow
for possible shaft misalignment.
b. Pulley Drive: In some cases a reduction in
pump speed is essential. This may be accom-
plished through a belt and pulley drive. Bear in
mind, however, that the belt tension adds a
side thrust to the pump drive shaft which re-
sults in extra bearing loading and wear with
resulting shortened pump life. A ball bearing
pillow block to support the belt load is advisa-
ble. (Figure 1)
c. For pulley driven pumps, a single V? (A or 4L
section) "V" belt is satisfactory for drive sizes
and speeds up to 1 HP 3450 RPM. For larger
drive sizes, doubl e " V" belts are recom-
mended. Maximum pump RPM is 1725.
5. Make necessary wiring connections. (Consult
nameplate on motor.)

Operation
For long life, prime pump before start-up. Care
should be taken at all times to avoid dry running as
this will cause increased wear of the gears and bear-
ings, reduce pump performance, and shortened
pump life. Gear pumps are built to very close toler-
ances and this tolerance must not be disturbed. The
liquids must, therefore, be free of all abrasives.
Sand, silt, wettable powders, etc., must be avoided.
PERFORMANCE
The pump relationship between volume (G.P.M.),
pressure (P.S.I.), speed (R.P.M.) and horsepower is
shown. All data is actual test results pumping water
at 70 F. When pumping a more viscous liquid a
slower speed, a larger pipe size pump, and possibly
a larger motor must be selected.
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
Teel 1P777 thru 1P781 Pumps are supplied with a
built-in pressure relief valve. This valve is fully ad-
justable and may be used to set an established sys-
tem operating pressure or as a system relief valve to
prevent damage when the discharge line is shut off.
Screwing the adjusting stem-"in" increases the sys-
tem relief pressure while moving it "out" decreases
the pressure, (valve is not preset at the factory and
must be adjusted at time of installation). The relief
valve may be moved from one side of the pump
cover to the other depending on the pump rotation.
It must always be on the same side of the pump as
the discharge port.
The built-in relief valve functions as a safety valve to
release internal pump and system pressures. This
relief valve should be used to protect the system
from high pressures; it is not a pressure regulating
valve. Pump will overheat if discharge is shut off for
extended intervals (more than 30 seconds). On ex-
tended shut-off applications, a separate by-pass, lo-
cated in the discharge line is recommended, such as
a Teel Model 1P786 Pressure Relief Valve.
Maintenance
WARNING: MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE POWER
SOURCE IS DISCONNECTED BEFORE ATTEMPT-
ING TO SERVICE OR DISASSEMBLE ANY COM-
PONENTS! IF THE POWER DISCONNECT IS OUT-
OF-SIGHT, LOCK IT IN THE OPEN POSITION AND
TAG TO PREVENT APPLICATION OF POWER.
LUBRICATION
Teel rotary gear pumps are provided with a leak-proof
zerk grease fittings for periodic lubrication. It is rec-
ommended that each pump be lubricated with a qual-
ity water pump grease at least every 8 operating
hours. Use Texaco "Starfax" lubricant.
CLEANING
Clean the suction line filter at regular intervals.
ELECTRIC MOTOR (Not Supplied)
Properly selected and installed electric motors are
capable of operating for years with minimal mainte-
nance. Periodically clean dirt accumulations from
open-type motors, especially in and around vent
openings, preferably by vacuuming (avoids imbed-
ding dirt in windings). Oil and maintain as recom-
mended by motor manufacturer.
GENERAL
Check the pump to motor shaft alignment at regular
intervals.
Periodically check that electrical connections are
tight.
Pump should be drained if placed in an area that is
subject to freezing temperatures.
