Junior Professional Women Intern (JPWI) Program

The JPWI program was created to encourage postgraduate students in diverse fields to obtain
internships and further pursue their careers in international organizations. A total of 200 participants
have taken internships with the support of this program since its launch in 2001. Participants undergo
a series of training sessions as well as receiving financial assistance from the Ministry of Gender
Equality & Family of Republic of Korea and proceed to undertaking internships in a range of
international organizations.


Objectives

To promote young Korean women to
develop careers at an international level
To provide opportunities for developing
professionalism
To reduce financial barriers to
undertaking internships in international
organizations

Program Description

Participants: In 2011, 40 female graduate
students were selected as JPWIs. The students
are from various backgrounds but share a
strong commitment towards working in
international organizations in the near future.
Fields of Study: Law, Economics,
International Relations, Civil Engineering,
Education, etc.
Selection Process: Applicants were first
reviewed according to the submitted
application form, essay and resume.
Applicants who passed the first screening
process then took an open examination
where they were asked to translate
international conventions from English to
Korean and vice versa, and were also
interviewed on their personal goals and
interests.

Training and Support(2013)

Pre-Internship Training
In-depth Training on International Affairs,
at Institute of Foreign Affairs and
National Security under Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (Jan 24, 2011 ~
Feb 11, 2011)
Global Leader Workshop (Mar 26 & Apr
30, 2011)
Conferences / Seminars (May 28 & Jul
2~3, 2011)
Translation / Research Training at
Ministry of Gender Equality & Family
(minimum 3weeks)

Participation in International Conferences
Outstanding participants during the previous
training sessions may obtain opportunities to
participate in international conferences.
Participants receive financial aid including
round-trip airfare and per diem allowance.

Internship The program offers financial
support to reduce the burden of the
expenditures which occur during an internship
period. The support covers round-trip airfare
and basic living expenses up to $7,500. The
amount may vary according to the region.
Participants must submit monthly reporting
on their activities. Interns can also benefit
from mentoring offered by previous
participants.

Post-Internship Deliverables JPWIs are
required to submit a final report and to give a
public presentation on their internship
experiences.

Participants were provided certification
recognizing their selection as a JPWI, and in
return signed a written pledge to undertake
this internship with responsibility.


Intensive Training Course for JPWI







Training on International Affairs/
January 24~Fabrury 11, 2011
Participants were offered a chance to learn
the definition of diplomacy, international
organization and multinational trade through
the lecture which was provided from the
institute of foreign affairs and national
security.

July 2~3, 2011

Through many group activities offered at
the 2-day workshop, participants developed
their communication skills and learned to
work more cooperatively and efficiently
preparing themselves for their internship.

Conference Commemorating Tenth Year of JPWI Program May 28, 2011

Participants were offered a chance to meet
Korean officers currently working at OECD
and the UN and also met and received
advice from many participants from the
previous years of JPWI Program.

















September Reporting Session September 20, 2011

Participants who have already completed
their internships abroad shared their
experiences, and those who have not yet
started their internship reported their
application processes and their efforts to
obtain internships. Participants talked about
the know-how theyve learned over the
months.
