Six days before the Passover celebration
began; Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home
of Lazarus - the man he had raised from the
dead. A dinner was prepared in Jesus honor.
Martha served, and Lazarus was among
those who ate with him. Then Mary took a
twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made
from essence of nard, and she anointed
Jesus feet with it, wiping his feet with her
hair. The house was flled with the fragrance.
(John 12:1-3)
This profoundly beautiful note has so much
to teach us. It was near to the last week of
Jesus life, he found solace as he faced the
cross, in the company of his friends and in
the hospitality of loved ones. Martha did
what Martha loved to do and honored him,
and Mary spoke volumes for the whole
family. She extravagantly, even scandalously,
and certainly sacrifcially worshipped the one
who had revealed his love and care to them
through the raising of Lazarus from the dead.
Mary quietly approached the couch where
Jesus lay eating and anointed his feet, the
work of a slave (usually water was used).
She was deeply humbled by him, and before
him, the One who had proven to be life itself,
who lived mercy and renewal, and who had
immersed her in joy and peace.
Wiping his feet with her hair, an expression
of intimacy reserved for the sweet secrets of
the marriage chamber she knelt unashamed,
she knew she was special to him. Incredibly
vulnerable, and open to him, she ofered
her whole self, and her heart fooded like a
river bursting its banks, with indescribable
gratitude. He had not only raised and healed
her brother; he had raised and healed her.
Revealed and unafraid she was certain of
complete acceptance, and the house was
flled with the fragrance of peace as it mixed
with the fragrance of the ointment.
Judas was completely blind to the whole
wonderful moment, closed out of the space,
and locked into an increasingly sick heart.
But Mary was free, and Jesus was delighted.
Take these opportunities was his urging,
moments like this were so precious, and they
still are.
As we are humbled by the one who was
humbled before and for us, as we behold
the one beholding us and smiling, as we
approach him unashamed (we are a new
and perfect creation), and unafraid (we
are accepted and acceptable), and full of
gratitude the fragrance of peace will fll the
room.
Extravagant, scandalous, and sacrifcial
worship will be expressed in so many diferent
ways. No one act is normative; it is the spirit
continued on page 2
of and the Spirit in the act that makes it holy. Perhaps you
will sing, or laugh, or cry, or get on your face, or spin, or
wave a fag or your arms, or stand or sit, or pour out mercy
on another. Perhaps you will be deeply silent, perhaps you
will shout at the top of your lungs. How do we love him? let
us count the ways, they are endless. Let Holy Spirit lead you
and he will show you how to honor Jesus today.
And one last thought. Mary had heard or maybe even
witnessed this action before and then she repeated it.
Extravagant worship was modeled for Mary by the women
whose heart overfowed like Niagara in gratitude at the
house of the Pharisee. Our children, or family, our friends
watch it all today, let them see you honor Jesus, and they
will be freed to repeat it.

MINISTRY TIME
We are fnding it difcult to have ministry time at
the end of the service because of tear-down and
clean up.
We are going to experiment with doing it
between the last two songs of worship.
We will follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
If we have prayer teams, it will be in the back of
the room.

Jesus didnt say, Blessed are those who care
for the poor. He said, Blessed are we where
we are poor, where we are broken. It is there
that God loves us deeply and pulls us into
