Roses are so retro that they
are perpetually stylish. Much more than the
print adorning your grandmothers teacups,
they now bloom in unexpected places
like phone cases and Keds. While prints like
chevron and ikat will come in and out of
favor, the rose pattern will endure.
There is something comforting and classi-
cally feminine about roses gracing a piece of
fabric. Their soft colors take us back to ballet
classes, the ribbon bud embellishing a t-shirt
and bows securing ponytails.
They remind us of the little girl who wanted
to be a grown-up sneaking a spray of her
mothers perfume.

Birthday Tablescapes
Share with us!
MY INTEREST IN TABLE DECORATING WAS INSPIRED
by hosting birthday luncheons and teas for my older friends. As a
freelance wedding and reception decorator, I brought some of the
details to birthday-party tables.
I enjoy seeing the facial expression of the honored guest when she
first encounters what has been implemented in her honor. Birthday
parties vary in size from a tea for two to a party that requires a
larger venue.
As my family owned a fabric center for 48 years, beautiful fabrics for
tablecloths were natural for me to incorporate into the table designs.
I consider the vintage table linens I inherited a treasure, and collecting
silver, china and crystal has been a lifelong endeavor.
After receiving my diploma in floral design, I kept up with
decorating trends by reading interior-design magazineswith many
inspired ideas coming from Romantic Homes.
Color is an important aspect of the design and often reflective of the
season. A birthday cake decorated with candies pleases seniors as
much as a candy-decorated cake does a child. The birthday recipient
is given a wrapped gift, the fresh floral design and the birthday cake.
A memorable table setting will set the tone for a memorable party.

Roses dont just belong in the garden. Give your bedroom a
refreshing redo by incorporating floral prints, light shades and
antique accents. These elements will combine beautifully for a
relaxing space inspired by June blooms.
FLORAL FABRICS
Start out right by using floral fabrics. We love the clusters of
blooms on this bed cover and matching shams. To balance a
bold cover like this, use sheets that feature a thin stipe of
complimentary color or a more delicate floral print. The tiny
rosebuds on these sheets create the perfect pairing.
Layer up the pillows! This is the perfect spot to feature unique
fabrics, like the pastoral toile-printed pillow cover.
VINTAGE ACCENTS
From the iron bed to the delicate chandelier and distressed
chair, the vintage accents add whimsy and charm. By painting
the metal accents white, the room is made to feel bright and
welcoming. Lightweight curtains and a light-reflecting mirror
help to evoke a garden-fresh feel.
Keep your design simple so that the roses can steal the show.

WHILE THE NAMES THOMAS EDISON
and Henry Ford are likely familiar, as the
saying goes: Behind every good man
stands a strong woman.
Edison and his wife Mina, honeymooned
at the Seminole Lodge in Fort Myers, Florida,
which became the Edisons winter home.
Later, Henry Ford and his wife, Clara, bought
the property next to the Edisons. The
acreage surrounding the homes was
originally used as experimental gardens for
industrial products. Mina and Clara gave the
gardens an aesthetic layer with the addition
of flowering plants, such as roses.
Both ladies, having been raised in the
North, were accustomed to beautiful
flowering gardens and wanted to create
similar gardens at their winter estates.
They knew the importance of finding
species of plants that would thrive in their
Southern surroundings.
The 20-acre grounds
contain more than 1,700
plants representing more
than 400 species from
six continents.
Growing
ROSES
It is important to find the species of
flowering rose that will prolifically grow in
you corner of the world. Here are a few tips
to help yield the best blossoms:
1. Local garden centers are a terrific
source of information and growing tips.
2. The Internet is the go-to spot for growers.
Search for the best variety to plant for your
region as well as maintenance tips like fertil-
izing and pruning.
3. Find the rose that not only suits your
climate but also fits your lifestyle as roses
vary greatly by species. If you are a low main-
tenance gardener, find a low maintenance
rose. And yes, there is such a thing!
4. Be realistic. Know the limitations for your
area and dont try to force a plant to grow
that will not withstand the elements.
5. Dont have a garden or green space?
No problem! Find a miniature potted rose
variety that will be happy on a sunny
windowsill in your home.

Many people believe that roses will not
grow in Florida. While not true, it is,
however, important to find varieties that
will flourish in the region. The Edisons
research and botanical gardens were
comprised of more than 1,000 plant
species collected from around the world.
This access to not only the plant material
but to the extensive knowledge that
came from the laboratories and
greenhouses made it possible to find
plants that would abundantly bloom on
their grounds.
For Mina, this love affair with beautiful
gardens, coupled with her strong resolve
for maintaining and preserving nature,
has stood the test of time. Mina
continued to enjoy spending the winter
months at the Seminole Lodge through
1947 when she deeded the property to
the city of Fort Myers. Years later, the
Fords property was also purchased and
made available to the public.
Both women,
having been raised in the
North, were accustomed to
beautiful flowering gardens
and wanted to create
similar gardens at their
winter estates.

Celebrate summer by
making one of these
cheerful flower baskets.
TIPS:
Food items, soaps and lotions,
and stationery with stamps make
sweet alternative gifts. Consider
using a fabric or paper doily folded
in half and hanging out of the front
of the basket.
A ribbon bow and streamers
added to the side of the handle
would make a lovely accent.
Include a handmade card with a
sweet sentiment or, if you are a
creative writer, a poem.

What youll do:
1. Create a pattern for the basket out of cardboard.
2. Cut out the pattern and score on the folds.
3. Cut thin strips of paint swatches, then weave them in and out.
4. Fold and tape the edges onto the inside.
5. Wrap the handle with paint strips, then tape the basket closed.
6. Line the inside with a baggie and fill with water.
7. Arrange garden clippings.

Basic White Buttercream:
1 cup shortening
2 teaspoons clear vanilla extract
Dash of salt
One 2-pound bag confectioners
sugar, about 7 cups
to cup milk or heavy cream
Combine the shortening, vanilla, and
salt in a standing mixer using the
paddle attachment. Add the
confectioners sugar 1 cup at a time,
alternating with the milk or heavy
cream, and blend. If the frosting is too
thick, add more milk. If it is too thin,
add more confectioners sugar.
Baking
1. Bake four white cake layers. Cool
the cakes to room temperature, then
freeze for at least 2 hours.
2. Using a long serrated knife,
carefully cut each layer in half
horizontally, creating eight layers,
(you will only use seven layers).
3. Prepare one recipe buttercream
and divide it into 6 bowls, about
cup per bowl.
4. Add 1 or 2 drops of gel food
coloring to each bowl and mix.
5. Place one cake layer onto a cake
stand. Using the offset spatula,
smooth all of the purple buttercream
on top of the layer. Since there will be
added weight on this layer, spread
the buttercream just to within a
-inch of the edge.

6. Place another cake layer on top
of the purple buttercream and frost
it with the blue buttercream.
Repeat, with the green, yellow,
orange and pink.
7. While you prepare the second
batch of buttercream, refrigerate
the cake.
8. Cover the cake in a crumb coat,
or light coat of frosting. Refrigerate
for at least one hour.
9. Frost with the back of a small
offset spatula making half-circle
motions to creating a gentle
wave effect.
Frosting and Decorating
1. Wrap a colorful ribbon around
the length of the dowel and secure
with double-sided tape or superglue.
Attach colorful ribbons to the top of
the dowel. Cover the top with a bow,
stickers or pom-pom.
2. Insert the dowel into the
center of the cake, deep enough to
be stable. Drape the ribbons over
the cake.
Attach colorful
ribbons to the top of
the dowel.
Cover the top with
a bow, stickers or
pom-pom.

WHEN I WAS A CHILD, MY
mother painted my room petal-pink. I
told her I wanted it the same color as
my brothers, a powder-blue, but she
no. Pink was everywhere, from my
room to my clotheswe even had
pink sofas.
Later, when we moved, our new
house was filled with bold colors
and just like that, pink was gone.
When the time came to decorate
my own home I did not allow pink,
but that changed when my grandma
reupholstered her sofas with a pink
fabric that caught my eye.
When I moved to Tyler, Texas, I
discovered a world of pink and white
that made me fall in love with it all over
again. Now my home embraces

A GARDEN OF MEMORIES
OUR PARENTS, STAN AND JODY GABARA,
have always been inspired by
Romantic Homes. We worked on many
projects in our garden as a family, and
our parents did all the landscaping.
When we were kids, our dad
designed trails on the hill where we
could run and play. He built garden
benches and raised beds for vegetables.
A deck offers beautiful views of
downtown San Diego. We also have
miniature fairy gardens, a pool and
flowers everywhere. We built copper
arches and handrails for the trails. It was
a great way to spend time together as a
family while creating memories.
Heres a photo of the garden at
right. To see more, visit our moms
blog, RootedInThyme.blogspot.com.
We hope our parents story inspires
other gardeners!

ROSE GARDENS ARE IN THEIR FULL GLORY,
with pinks, reds, whites, creams and yellows
all competing for attention. Eleven months
out of the year, many of us proudly play the
role of seasoned gardener, letting all assume
that our rose gardens are perfectly sculpted
executions of horticultural perfection
planned and controlled. But the truth is,
when well-loved gardens reach their
summertime peak, the gardener is no longer
in control. In June, the roses have taken over.
As a profusion of buds, petals and blooms
explode upon their vines, clamoring to show
their glorious selves, all the gardener can do
is cut and gather, fill and display.
Roses can elegantly grace the most
valuable of vases and will just as easily rest
within an old Mason jar. Now that the
season has begun, it is time to relish in these
blooms in both our gardens and our homes.
There can only one rule once rose season
is upon our gardens: No available space or
container is off limits.
CLASSIC
An antique ironstone pitcher is one of the
best companions for a billowy cluster of
roses. Pitchers of all styles, silver, delicate
porcelain or hardy ironstone, always look
lovely holding a bouquet of colorful blooms.
One favorite looka white pitcher filled
with white roses.
SIMPLY SWEET
The ordinary findings of everyday life often
make the sweetest containers for roses.
Salt and pepper shakers can be relieved
of their covers and used to hold one or
two blooms.
Small bouquets in simple Mason jars can
be scattered throughout your home.
A simple drinking glass or single wine
glass can hold a few tiny buds. Set it on your
dining table to give a romantic touch to
summer entertaining.

Extra Credit After arranging bouquets for the
house, there are usually one or two leftover
flowers. While it may not last terribly long,
slip one inside a book for a sweet bookmark.

TIP
Purchase several water tubes
from a floral-supply store.
These little plastic tubes,
which can be filled with
water and the stem of one
rose, are a great way to add
fresh roses to a wreath or
other container.
Finding inexpensive, yet charming,
containers is relatively simple. You can
pull pretty pieces from your own
cupboards or find something special
at a vintage shop or flea market.
GROUPINGS
A collection of little bottles, each
holding a single rose, makes a sweet
statement when grouped together
on a bedroom dressing table or a
powder-room vanity.
GO BIG
Gather a generous cluster of wild
roses and display in a vintage
wastepaper basket or pile large and
unruly bouquets into old baskets.
Bouquets do not have to be
relegated to formal rooms or even
inside. Place a basket of colorful roses in
an entrance hall, mudroom or even the
laundry room. Fill an outside urn or
planter with an ever-changing display
of summer flowers to greet guests.
SHOWTIME
Dont neglect your mantelpiece
during the summer months. Instead, let
your mantel take center stage with a
bouquet of peach roses. Ramp up the
bling by tucking the blooms into a
vintage silver tureen, surrounded by
RH-1406-12-43-FOBnew 4/1/14 4:43 AM Page 31

candles and backed by an antique
mirror. Your mantelpiece will shine and
the roses can take their bow.
ACCESSORIZE
Stunning alone, roses can easily carry
the show, but even a rose can some-
times use a little accessory. Add some
greenery to your displays; ferns, leaves
and vines add texture and color. Then,
tuck a few wildflowers into your rose
arrangements. Queen Annes Lace and
daisies coordinate well for a sweet look,
or trump up the drama with a
flamboyant hydrangea bloom.
TODAYS NEWS
Make your bouquets casual yet
elegant. Who wouldnt love the look of
a haphazard bouquet of multicolored
roses wrapped in newspaper and laid
to rest on a favorite table? Gather the
stems together and wrap them in wet
paper towels. Next, cover the towels in
plastic wrap to prevent leakage and
finish by tucking the bouquet into a
newspaper cone.
THINK OUTSIDE THE VASE
Water tubes come in handy when
creating unique displays for blooms. If
your chosen vessel does not hold
water, simply insert a plastic container
or smaller vase inside.
OUR FAVORITE IDEAS:
A pink-satin ballet slipper, hanging on
a door by its ribbons, can hold a small
cluster of roses.
A great vintage traveling case or
hatbox is a unique showcase for a
simple table.

The history and ambience of tea-drinking
are steeped in tradition.

THE RITUAL OF TAKING TEA
is a custom women have enjoyed for
centuries, whether a royal tea complete
with champagne and delicacies or the
more humble cream tea with scones,
jam and clotted cream.
The tradition of afternoon tea in
England is credited to Anna, Seventh
Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1800s.
To prevent sinking spells, she instituted
the custom of a small afternoon tea and
meal to break up the long expanse of
time between lunch and dinner in a
formal setting.
According to tea and etiquette expert
Dorothea Johnson, history places after-
noon tea in France more than a century
earlier. Madame de Svign (1626-1696)
referred to five oclock tea in a letter to
a friend and mentioned her surprise
that some people take milk in their tea.
To prevent
sinking spells,
Anna, Seventh Duchess
of Bedford, instituted the
custom of a small
afternoon tea and meal
to break up the long
expanse of time
between lunch and
dinner in a
formal setting.

HIGH TEA: A high tea is not an
afternoon tea served on fine
china; it is a family sit-down
supper with heartier foods like
Shepherds Pie. High tea origi-
nated during the Industrial
Revolution of the 19th century,
when factory workers returned
home hungry after a long day
of work.
The five types of teas enjoyed today fall
roughly into these categories: cream tea,
light tea, full tea, royal tea and high tea.
Teas are good opportunities to use family
heirlooms and flea-market finds. The tea
set pictured is Royal Alberts American
Beauty pattern, which coordinates with
the Limoges plates. The food is served
from a Victorian three-tier cake stand.

Something
Situated in the picturesque
Moreton Bay area southeast of Brisbane,
Australia, this contemporary family house
has been given a new lease on life with
inspiration from the French countryside.
Homeowners Hayley and Paul Morton
considered moving when they outgrew
their modern home following the birth
of their two children, but changed
their minds.
We couldnt find another house we
really liked, so we decided to renovate the
house instead of moving, Hayley says.
The Mortons love of the French
lifestyle and culture has evolved from
their first visit to the Loire Valley and
Provence more than a decade ago. Having
been back to the region several times
since, the couple knew they wanted to
bring home the look of the beloved area.
Paul and Hayley visited the architect
who designed the house more than 15
years ago to ensure that the extension
would be a seamless addition.
It was a perfectly simple design, and
now people ask us if we built from new.
They cant tell where the old house stops
and the new house starts which is
exactly what we wanted, Paul says.

Personal Stamp
Hayley and interior designer Anna Spiro
searched antique shops, flea markets and
auctions for unique treasures to add to the
home. Their efforts were not in vain, as
evidenced by the antique chest of drawers
and vintage lamp used in the entry.
I think one of my favorite things in this
house is the pair of French gilt chairs,
found at a little antiques shop in Brisbane.
We covered them in a pretty pale-blue and
white stripe fabric, Anna says.
Paul and Hayley contributed to the
creation of each room, even searching
online auction sites for unusual decorative
pieces. At one point, they found a set
of nine copper etchings from a dealer
in Munich.
We thought we were calling a shop
and would be leaving a message in the
middle of the night, Hayley recalls. But
the owner picked up the phone at four in
the morning! Lucky for us he was already
awake, waiting for a phone call about the
birth of a grandchild.
Paul and Hayleys favorite color,
blue, creates a cohesive look throughout
the house in shades of pale-sky blue to a
deep-ink hue. White also plays a role in
uniting each room. Simple accents,
shelving and painted furniture help pull
together the look.

We can enjoy all the elegance of an old building
without having to compromise on practicality,
Hayley says.
One of the standout features of the Mortons house
is how they incorporated the elegance of traditional
details and proportions into a modern house. By
opening up to create larger rooms and high ceilings,
they have created a flow that blends one room to
the next without having a wide-open plan.
Smaller architectural details also add to the homes
style and ambience. Kitchen cabinets, columns and
baseboards all feature traditional moldings.
The butlers sink and kitchen hardware were
carefully chosen to match the French provincial style
that Hayley adores.

Custom Kitchen
The kitchen features traditional cabinets
and marble bench tops, but behind the
simple, classic look is practical design
that creates a well-organized and fully-
functioning workspace.
Paul and Hayley installed custom drawers
and shelves that are the perfect size for storing
platters, as well as The kitchen is designed to
ensure everyday essentials are on hand when
needed but can easily be tucked away.
Unsightly outlets are hidden in the
cupboards at either end of the island so that
phones, cameras and the childrens DVD
players can be charged out of sight.
This organized design allows the family to
take full advantage of their ideal location.
We love living here in such a warm climate
beside a bay famous for its seafood and
beaches. The sun shines most of the year, and
we can enjoy the outdoors, entertaining family
and friends and swimming with the children,
Hayley says.

Designer Anna Spiro combined
traditional upholstery and antiques
with a confident mix of luxurious
fabrics and colors. These doses of
patina soften the contemporary and
neutral backdrop of the house.
Anna also inspired and advised the
homeowners on some bigger invest-
ments in antique furniture.
I took Paul and Hayley shopping
for antique pieces that I know they
will treasure and love forever but
also would not date, Anna explains.
So, I helped them create a home
that I think will definitely stand the
test of time.

Ritslevs purchased their farmhouse,
which was built in 1818, 13 years ago.
Much of the original land had been sold
off over the years, leaving the four-winged
house to sit on two acres. The location is
stunning: just 10 feet from the living
room window is Roskilde Fjord,
with views of the local cathedral as well as
a small island.
When the couple bought the farm,
it was in desperate need of repair,
verging on being in ruins. Weeds grew
everywhere and all the windows had
been broken.
Today, the farm is in much better
condition. While it is still not completely
finished, the couple has been carefully
restoring the farm since the purchase.
Finn and Birthe live and work out of the
home, with Finn running his own
business there and Birthe having opened
an antiques shop in one of the wings. Her
love of giving old things a new life
spurred her small business into action,
and now she sells antique furniture.
Garden Living
The couple landscaped the garden so as
to create a carefully composed outdoor
environment with lush blooms, trimmed
shrubbery and idyllic spots for relaxation.

preferences, creating a functional and
beautiful home. While craftsmen helped
the couple restore their home, the
decorative details and the furnishings are
the work of Birthe.
The kitchen is large and bright, with
butcher-block countertops and light wood
cabinetry. The well-designed kitchen
pays careful attention to functionality,
featuring a large island perfect for prep
work and serving.
The home features coarse terracotta tiles
as well as teak wood flooring with a delicate
whitewashed finish. These garden-like
flooring materials are enhanced by the
feminine touches Birthe added to the
house. The contrast of various antique lace
curtains, tablecloths and upholstery makes
the home soft and welcoming without
being too feminine.

The couple created a living room that

GARDEN LIVING
Take inspiration from
nature and make your home
feel like an extension of
your garden.
NEUTRALS. Soft browns, creamy hues,
cool blues and pale greens combine for a
casual and welcoming feel.
TEXTURE. Instead of carpet or tradi-
tional hardwood flooring, install tile and
reclaimed wood flooring. The texture will
add a natural feel beneath your feet.
OPEN UP. Hang sheer curtains over
windows and adjust furniture so as to
take full advantage of your views.
NATURALS. Be it a straw basket,
potted plants or fresh-cut blooms, bring
natural elements inside to complete
your look.

windows to provide a full view of the fjord.
The broad ship plank flooring that runs
the length of the room amplifies the
panoramic effect created by the windows.
Finn and Birthes large master bedroom
is in the process of being renovated.
While it does not have views of the fjord,
a smaller, neighboring bedroom does.
The couple plans to create a small library
in this bedroom and will adjoin it to
the master.
As the renovations on the home
continue, Birthe continuously plays with
artwork arrangements and dcor. She
often makes centerpieces for the entry
table that feature trimmings from the gar-
den and other natural elements from their
surrounding land. One thing Finn and
Birthe do not plan on changing is the
furniture. The couple has collected a
variety of unique pieces through many
years of flea-market shopping, and though
Birthe loves refinishing and reselling pieces
in her shop, their collection is a treasure to
hold onto.

Perfectly
Arranged
A classic approach to flower arranging is given a
fresh twist in this slightly asymmetrical
arrangement. The mix of silvery-green foliage
complements the harmonious hues of the flowers
while giving texture and visual interest.

The shape of this front-facing arrangement
is designed so that the flowers face forward or out to the sides,
while the back of the display is flat. This makes the arrangement
ideal to feature against a wall on a sideboard or hall table.
An absence of strong green foliage gives an informal, updated
look and allows the harmonious color palette of pink, purple,
lilac, gray and silver shades to resonate together for a soft,
romantic feel.

Soak small foam blocks and put them
into the urn to make a raised base.
Insert one stem of eucalyptus in the
top and two at a downward angle at
either side.
1
2
Eucalyptus foliage has the
longest stems and provides
the best framework on
which to build the fan
shape of the design.
Build up the base with more, but not all,
of the foliage evenly dispersed through-
out the arrangement, and the shorter
stems of rosemary inserted at the front.
Reserve the remaining foliage.
Rosemary is a dense-looking
foliage, so trim these stems
quite short and add them to
the center of the design to
give it weight.
4
Add the sweet peas and clematis, angling
the stems at the sides. Insert stems at the
base of the foam at an upward angle so
the flowers point down to hide the rim of
the urn.
5
Add the roses, loosely massing the majority
of blooms in the center, and placing a few
around the top and edges. Balance the
arrangement with any remaining flowers
and check for any gaps.
Fill any gaps in the
design with individual
stems of the reserved
foliage, but dont overfill
the arrangement.
The foam must sit proud
of the urn so you can
insert some stems at an
upward angle to give
shape to the design and
hide the urn rim.
RH-1406-74-77-FLOWER 4/1/14 5:33 AM Page 76

3
Add some long, strong stems to the back
and sides. Insert the stems at the sides at
an angle so the flowers point upward.
Repeat with the delphiniums.
6
Add the trailing jasmine to the front of the
foam at one side. Strip off the leaves, as
they tend to die quickly. It may need to
be replaced after a few days.
The design is dense with clusters
of roses and rosemary at the
center, and looser and more airy
around the edges.
Insider Tips
When working with floral foam, make sure the flowers
and foliage are cut and conditioned and left to stand in
fresh water for at least an hour before arranging them.
To get the right height, you will need flowers with
long stems for this design, so look for long-stemmed
sweet peas. The longest stems in this arrangement are
approximately 21inches; reduce or increase the size of
your arrangement based on your surroundings.
Top off the container with water every day and mist
the flowers to last longer.
Simple Flower Arranging by Mark Welford
and Stephen Wicks, 2014 DK Publishing.
Check the height of
each flower against
the framework foliage
before you trim the
end and insert it into
the foam.

Like most little girls, my daughter
loves princesses. So for her seventh birthday, I wanted to
throw her a party fit for a princess. My goal was to convey
the essence of Cinderella without overtly incorporating
her character into the design. I wanted the party to look
chic rather than overridden with trademarked
characters, so we chose a princess tea party theme with
obvious Cinderella accents.
Instead of creating a separate table space for desserts,
use your gorgeous miniature desserts as the perfect
centerpiece. A variety of vintage cake plates and
compotes in assorted heights and pastel colors, as well as
vintage linens and doilies, help to quickly and easily pull
the table display together.

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
Ingredients:
1 cup margarine or butter, such as Imperial
1 cup vegetable shortening
2 pounds confectioners sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 tablespoons whole milk
Directions:
n Combine the margarine and vegetable shortening in a
bowl and beat on medium speed until smooth, about
2 minutes.
n Add half of the confectioners sugar and continue
beating on low speed for an additional 2 minutes, or
until the mixture is creamy, scraping the sides of the
bowl with a rubber spatula as needed.
n Add the remaining confectioners sugar, vanilla and
milk, and beat until the frosting is creamy and fluffy,
about 2 minutes more.
n Add any food coloring and beat on low speed until
light and fluffy.
ENCHANTED ROSE
CUPCAKES
Ingredients:
1 box French vanilla cake mix, such as
Duncan Hines
1 package (3.4 oz.) French vanilla instant
pudding and pie filling, dry, such as Jell-O
1 cup water
1 cup oil
4 eggs
1 batch buttercream frosting
Pale-pink soft gel paste color
You will need:
2 mini cupcake trays
48 mini paper cupcake liners
Cookie scoop
1 large pastry bag
1M Wilton decorating tip
Directions:
n Preheat the oven to 350F. Line the cupcake
trays with the paper liners and set aside.
n In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, pudding mix,
water, oil and eggs on medium speed for 2 to 3
minutes, or until well blended. Scrape down the
sides of the bowl and mix again until all the ingre-
dients are incorporated.
n Using a cookie scoop, place one small scoop of
cake batter into each paper liner, filling about
full, dividing evenly between the cupcake trays to
create a perfectly even batch of cupcakes.
n Bake for 1013 minutes, or until a toothpick
inserted into the center comes out clean.
n Let cool in the trays for 5 minutes. Then take the
cupcakes out of the trays and allow them to cool
completely before decorating.
n Meanwhile, make the buttercream frosting. Add
pink food coloring until it reaches the desired
shade.
n Prepare the pastry bag and fill.
n Starting from the center of the cupcake top,
begin to squeeze the decorating bag, using consis-
tent pressure, and in a clockwise motion, swirl
around to create a rose.

ew things are more
romantic than a lush garden full of
vibrant color and sprinkled with
cobblestone pathways. Virginia Woolf s
Garden by Caroline Zoob explores the
intricate flowers blooming behind Monks
House, where the legendary author and her
husband, Leonard, lived. The Woolfs teach us
that even a garden can be designed and is just
as much a part of a home as the indoor space.
Cultivating each space within this outdoor
sanctuary, Virginia and Leonard thoughtfully
designed and planned for years. The orchard
and fig tree garden, flower walk and millstone
terrace are only a few of the intricately
planned spaces within their garden.
Most of Virginias writing was done in
this outdoor spaceit was her muse and
inspiration. She was especially fond of the
orchard, with trees heavy with pears, plums,
apples and cherries. Virginia frequently wrote
about brilliant blooms lighting quiet evening
strolls along winding pathways.
The Woolfs were not afraid of color
and loved planting diverse flowers in the
soil of Monks House. The variety found
in the garden is inspiration for modern gar-
den design, with something new around
every corner.
Leonard and Virginia were fascinated by
the idea of a quiet continuity of people
living, believing that the people who had
lived in the house before them had been
absorbed into its history, each playing a small
part in creating the tranquil atmosphere of
the house and garden, Caroline writes.

Tips for
Cultivating
Your Garden
USE ROSES: Leonards favorite
flowers were roses. These popular
blooms come in many colors and are a
perfect starting point when deciding
what to include in your outdoor space.
NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE
PLANTED IN THE GROUND. Potted
plants are a great way to add flair and
unique design to your garden. Try
planting lots of small blossoms in large
urns for a traditional look.
BRING THE OUTSIDE IN. One perk
of a lush garden is the ability to bring
that beauty inside. Clip some fresh
flowers and add them to tabletops and
windowsills throughout your home for
a touch of romance.
At moments it is divinely lovely
herehot, birds, daffodils, blue
sky, Virginia Woolf wrote.
Virginia Woolf s Garden is a picture of
how our homes and gardens are planted
in the same soil, rooted in time. Fill it
with flowers big and bright, small and
subtle. Create a space where the charm of
your interior design flows outside onto
the cobblestone pathway, guiding you
further and further into creativity and
springtime beauty.
A desk that resembles a potting table with a
small pot used to hold paint brushes is a great example of
how garden elements can be brought inside. Place garden
accessories in your home for a touch of rustic romance.

1. GOYARD TOTE: My absolute
go-to bag. Its perfect for client
meetings, shopping and
traveling.
2. MECOX GARDENS, LOS
ANGELES: I can always find
something unique here. They
have a fantastic selection of art
and accessories.
3. BEATS HEADPHONES: I am
an avid runner, and these
headphones are the best when
it comes to quality and sound.
4. LAKE COMO, ITALY: The calm
and serenity here is undeniable,
and the architecture is superb.
Everything about this city
inspires me.
5. BELLE FLEUR CANDLES: A
client gave me the Mayan
tuberose scent as a gift, and
Ive been hooked ever since.
6. BLUEPRINT CLEANSE: Doing
this cleanse twice a year is the
best way to get my body back
7
in check after the holidays or
an indulgent vacation.
7. KFI GRASS CLOTH: This
wallcovering plays double-duty
because its full of pattern and
texture. The color options are
amazing too.
