The 926FS series railwheel sensor is a 2-wire proximity sensor that can detect railwheels at speeds up to 281 mph. It has an IP68 rating and operates in a wide temperature range. The sensor generates a current output and can be quickly installed by clamping it to the rail without drilling. It is resistant to shock, vibration and polarity changes in wiring. Two sensors are typically used together to measure speed or direction of rolling stock by using different oscillator frequencies.

MICRO SWITCH Sensing and Control FEATURES Detects standard railwheels up to speeds of 281 mph Sealing to IP 68 Wide temperature range Quick installation Short circuit, overvoltage and transient protection Resistant to shock and vibration Polarity independent - voltage may be reversed and sensor still works Connecting wires may be up to 2 miles only (>10,000 ft.) TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Detecting presence or absence of rolling stock Measuring speed of rolling stock (in combination with a second sensor) Determining direction of travel (with a second sensor) The 926FS Series railwheel sensor is a 2-wire DC inductive proximity sensor especially designed and constructed for sensing the wheel flange of railed vehicles at speeds up to 281 mph (450 kmh). An important feature of this sensor is quick installation it can be clamped to the rail, with no need for drilling or machining. Other features are its polarity independence and transient protection (2 kV, 1/50 s). The sensor generates a current output. Each sensor consists of an oscillator, demodulator and trigger circuit. The high frequency oscillator has an open magnetic circuit. It produces an alternating current, which in turn generates an electro- magnetic field. A metal object, (i.e. a railwheel flange) entering the airspace, affects this field, dampening the oscillator and reducing the magnitude of the output current. Note that in order to measure the speed or direction of rolling stock motion, two sensors are mounted together. To prevent the oscillators influencing one another, one low (L) and one high (H) frequency sensor must be used.
