Body Makeover: Plastic Surgery

Nowadays people wants to beautiful and perfect. They would do anything to be beautiful and
perfect. Some of them adopt a healthy lifestyle such as exercising and eating nutritious foods while
others take more drastic action such as use of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is very popular because it
shows a very quick result and lasts forever. According to debatewise.org, people choose plastic surgery
for three reasons: Firstly, it can remove mental illnesses. Also, each person has freedom of
expression. And finally, people whose part of the body got badly damaged have a chance to improve
their appearance.
Some people take all of their attention on their appearance which can have enormous influence
on their well-being. When people are worried too much about their unsatisfying appearance, certain
mental illnesses such as anorexia and body dysmorphia would arise, which, if unfortunately, may make
people harm themselves barely to achieve the satisfaction. However, with the science of plastic surgery,
people have the ability to change the body part that they do not like and thus mitigate the life-
threatening mental illnesses. Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by refusal to maintain a
healthy body weight and an obsessive fear of gaining weight. BDD is a disorder in which the affected
person is excessively concerned about and preoccupied by a perceived defect in his or her physical
features.
Anyone in this world is empowered clearly by laws to have the right to enhance their own
expression. Based on debatewise.org, under the Human Rights Act which enshrines the European
Convention on Human Rights, we have the freedom to express ourselves, Article 10 ECHR. In sum,
every person has the right to alter their body as they want it to be. People can dye their hair, change
their clothes, and have piercings, etc. Similarly, they are able to have plastic surgery on their own body.
There is no reason why people should not be able to undergo plastic surgery.
If someone was severely injured in a car accident or any horrible accident, he/she might
reconstruct their outward appearance by means of plastic surgery and then get an opportunity to be
reborn. Richard Lee Norris a 37-year-old Virginia man severely disfigured by a 1997 gun accident has
received the most extensive full-face transplant in medical history, according to University of Maryland
Medical Center surgeons. Based on these cases, Norris appearance is likely to gradually transform over
time to look like a combination of his new and original face, and he may regain at least partial sensation.
Dr. Rodriquez is hopeful that Norris, who is unemployed and has lived with his parents since the
accident, will now be able to have a full life.
Plastic surgery not only can relax peoples mental illnesses but can give someone who had gone
through a miserable calamity a chance to live again. In addition, these surgery demonstrate peoples
freedom of expression and also exercise the given human rights. Therefore, cosmetic surgery is
supposed to be respected and even not to be prohibited.

Water rationing in Selangor from tomorrow
Alfian ZM Tahir | February 24, 2014
PETALING JAYA: The Selangor state government will start water rationing in the state from tomorrow.
Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim said the focus will be on areas that have been facing water disruption.
Khalid said that he has met local authorities to discuss the possible ways to resolve the water crisies.
I have discussed with the local authorities about what can be done in resolving the Selangor water crisis
and we will implement rationing from tomorrow.
We will focus on areas which are affected badly by the recent water crisis, he said in his personal
twitter account.
Last Friday the state government has issued an order to the Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) to
activate its emergency plan including rationing which would operate until the end of March.
In addition, the state have also asked the Consortium Abbas Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Darul Ehsan
Group (KDEB) to supply drinking water to the affected areas.
Khalid said water would be rationed in stages so that all areas would receive supply every two days.
We pledge that every consumer will receive water, but it will be rationed to ensure supply every two
days. In a week, consumers will receive water for four days, he told reporters after attending the
monthly gathering of civil servants, here.
Khalid said the water rationing would go on until such time that the state government felt the need to
discontinue it with the advent of the rainy season, most probably at the end of March.
He said the water rationing would help to conserve water in the dams over the next two months should
the current dry season prolong.
The menteri besar said that if the rainy season came earlier, the water rationing would be discontinued
and the state government would report on the actual situation in the middle of March for further action.
He also said that Selangor would be divided into two zones for the purpose of the water rationing and
the notice on the rationing would be issued this evening at the latest.
The state government would have discussions with the local authorities in the badly affected areas, such
as around the water treatment plants in Batu 11, Cheras, and Bukit Tampoi to seek the best way to help
the people there facing a water shortage, he said.
Khalid advised the people to use water sparingly, store enough water for their needs and cut down on
activities which used much water during the current drought.

Face Transplant Operation is 'Most Extensive in
History'
By Lisa Collier Cool
Mar 27, 2012
A 37-year-old Virginia man severely disfigured by a 1997 gun accident has received the most extensive full-face
transplant in medical history, according to University of Maryland Medical Center surgeons.
Hospital officials report that Richard Lee Norris, of Hillsville, Va., is recovering well after an amazing, medically
unprecedented 36-hour surgery that not only gave him a new facefrom the hairline to the neck--but also teeth, a
tongue, and upper and lower jaws. (See before/after photo above, right.)
A week after the full-face operation, Norris improvement has exceeded his doctors expectations. He can open and
close his mouth and is already brushing his new teeth and shaving the whiskers growing on the transplanted face.
Hes miraculously regained his sense of smell, which hed lost after the accident.

15 Years Hiding Behind a Mask
After the gun accident destroyed his facerobbing him of his lips, nose and teeth and limiting use of his mouth
Norris underwent many lifesaving and reconstructive surgeries. He remained so disfigured that he became a recluse,
hiding in his home by day and only venturing out at night to shop, wearing a mask to conceal his face, according to a
report by MSNBC.
"It's a surreal experience to look at him. It's hard not to stare. Before, people used to stare at Richard because he
wore a mask and they wanted to see the deformity," said lead surgeon Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, associate professor of
surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Now, they have another reason to stare at him, and it's really
amazing."

A Groundbreaking Medical First
Norris doctors say that the two-day operation is the worlds first full-face transplant performed by a team of plastic
and reconstructive surgeons with specialized training and expertise in craniofacial surgery and reconstructive
microsurgery.
In all, more than 150 doctors, nurses, and medical staffers were involved in the groundbreaking procedure, which
used innovative surgical and computerized techniques to precisely transplant the mid-face, maxilla and mandible
including teeth, and a portion of the tongue, as well as underlying muscles and nerves, said Dr. Rodriquez in a news
release.
Our goal is to restore function as well as have aesthetically pleasing results.
Breakthroughs in Tissue and Eye Surgery
A Rare Operation
Norris is only the 23rd person in medical history to receive a face transplant since surgeons began doing the
operation seven years ago. The first full-face transplant was performed in France, on a woman whose face was
severely mauled by her dog. The first US partial face transplant was done at the Cleveland Clinic in 2008, while the
first U.S. full-face procedures were performed last year at Brigham and Womens Hospital (BWH) in Boston.
Recipients include Dallas Wiens, a 26-year-old Texan who accidentally struck a power line while painting a church;
Mitch Hunter, 30, of Indiana, disfigured by a car crash, and Charla Nash, who was famously attacked and mauled by
a neighbors pet chimpanzee, Travis. The three patients results were described in a recent New England Journal of
Medicine study.
Whats Involved in a Full-Face Transplant?
"Unlike conventional reconstruction, facial transplantation seeks to transform severely deformed features to a near-
normal appearance and function that conventional reconstructive plastic surgical techniques cannot
match," NEJM study author Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, director of the plastic surgery transplantation program at
BWH, reported last year. "It truly is a life-giving procedure."
Before a full-face transplant, patients must undergo rigorous medical and psychological exams to determine if the
person is physically and mentally ready for the grueling and life-altering surgery and its potential risks, which
including infections, anesthesia reactions, severe bleeding, and the possibility that the transplant may fail.
How risky are full-face transplants?
In the NEJM study, Hunter and Nash had single episodes of rejection, which were successfully treated with
immunosuppressant drugs so their bodies wouldnt reject the new faces. All three patients in the study got infections,
with Nash developing both pneumonia and kidney failure after the operation.
Nashs doctors also tried to give her new hands (from the same donor) to replace those lost in the chimp attack, a
procedure only attempted once before, in France. In Nashs case, the hand procedure failed and the new hands had
to be amputated. However, the full-face transplant took and she has regained sensation, but not movement, in her
face, according to CBS.
What might be ahead for Richard Lee Norris?
In the NEJM study, the three patients who received full-face transplants all regained partial sensation in their new
faces in a few months. The researchers also reported promising results in 18 patients who received face transplants
since 2005, but most were to repair partial disfigurement.
Based on these cases, Norris appearance is likely to gradually transform over time to look like a combination of his
new and original face, and he may regain at least partial sensation. Dr. Rodriquez is hopeful that Norris, who is
unemployed and has lived with his parents since the accident, will now be able to have a full life.
"This accidental injury just destroyed everything, Dr. Rodriguez told Associated Press. The rest of his friends and
colleagues went on to start getting married, having children, owning homes. After 15 years behind a mask, he wants
to make up for all of that.
