Course Description
This is an exploratory course which leads to ANIMAL PRODUCTION (NC ll). It covers six (6) competencies that a Grade 7 and 8 Technology Livelihood Education (TLE) student ought to possess, namely: 1) Use of Farm Tools and Equipment, 2) Maintenance of Tools and Equipment, 3) Perform Mensuration and Calculation, 4) Interpret Plans and Layout, 5) Practice Occupational Health and Safety, 6) Basic Principles in Animal Production , and 6) Marketing. The preliminaries of this course include the following: 1) Discussion on the relevance of the course; 2) Explanation of key concepts related to the course and; 3) Exploration of business opportunities

Recognize tools and equipment used in poultry and livestock production Determine when to use appropriate tools and equipment Make description on how to use farm tools and equipment in poultry and livestock production Decide what tools to use based on farm operations Handle farm tools and equipment in poultry and livestock production properly Describe the function of each of the farm tools and equipment used in poultry and livestock production Determine how to maintain the usability of farm tools and equipment Apply proper methods of cleaning, oiling and storing tools and equipment Make a regular inventory of the farm tools and equipment Perform simple repairs of the tools and equipment Perform regular sharpening of the cutting tools
Lesson 2: Housing and Equipment for Herds and Flocks
Types of animal houses and units Fixtures and equipment for the herd Construction of simple feeding and drinking trough Selection of an ideal farm house for the animals The learner demonstrates understanding of the importance of housing and equipment for herds and flocks The learner independently layouts the ideal housing and equipment to use based on the given functions LO 1. Select housing system and equipment 1. Analyze the benefits of proper housing and complete equipment with regards to production 2. Analyze the factors in the selection of site of poultry and livestock farm houses and how they affect production Lesson 3: Feeds and Feeding Farm Animals 1. Classification of feeds 2. Animal rations 3. Formulation of simple ration 4. Importance of giving the right amount and right kind of feeds for pecific The learner demonstrates understanding of how feeds are classified and formulated using the Pearson Square method The learner independently calculates the amount of feeds based on the animal requirements LO 1 Classify Feeds
