Course Syllabus

Course title: HT 522 Modern Church


Course description: A survey of church history from the Puritan era to the present with special emphasis given to
Puritan developments, the great missionary movements, the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy,
and the recent rise of Reformed Baptist churches in America.
Course instructors: D M (see note at end of syllabus) has been a pastor of the same Reformed Baptist church for over
twenty years. He has both a B.S. and a M.S. in the field of agriculture. He is a graduate of Trinity
Ministerial Academy, and has also a M.Div. from Reformed Baptist Seminary. He is an author and
has lectured on church history in the U.S. and several other countries. He and his wife have five
children.
Course credit: 3 credit-hours
Course requirements: Student must satisfactorily complete the following course requirements:

The Great Change Initiating the Post-Apostolic Period of Church History - separate document
located at the back of the class manuscripts
Religious liberty in America and Isaac Backus - pp. 292-305
The modern Roman Catholic church - pp. 406-415
The substitution of another work for those listed above in the first three categories will be
considered, but it must be approved by the course instructor in advance of its being read.
(3) Exams The student shall complete the initial introductory exam over the British Reformation, which is
covered in the first 6 lectures and in the lecture notes (pp. 1-71). Then the student will complete the
final exam, which shall cover the material given in the remaining lectures and found in the notes
(pp. 72-429 [including appendices]).
A Study Guide is provided for each exam to provide the student with direction in preparing for
the exam questions. If the student has any questions before the taking the exams, he should contact

Course grading: Lectures & reading = 10%/ Introductory exam = 20%/ Final exam = 70%
