Passivation treatment of a Co-Ni-Cr-Mo alloy for biomedical material application. The alloy has an excellent corrosion resistance due to the high contents of alloying elements like Cr and Mo. The corrosion resistance of the alloy in simplified synthetic biological solutions was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Co-based alloys are commonly used for biomedical applications, e.g., a Co-Ni-Cr-Mo super alloy (MP35N or 35N LT) alloy is used as thin wires in implantable medical devices. The alloy has an excellent corrosion resistance due to the high contents of alloying elements like Cr and Mo. In this study, to further reduce the metal release, passivation of 35N LT was performed by a chemical treatment in an HNO 3 solution. The corrosion resistance of the alloy in simplified synthetic biological solutions was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Metal release from the alloy during the passivation treatment and during exposure to a synthetic biological solution was determined by solution analysis
