Running head: EFFECTIVE STATISTICAL METHODS FOR POPULATION 1

Welcome to WritePoint, the automated review system that recognizes errors most
commonly made by university students in academic essays. The system embeds comments
into your paper and suggests possible changes in grammar and style. Please evaluate each
comment carefully to ensure that the suggested change is appropriate for your paper, but
remember that your instructor's preferences for style and format prevail. You will also
need to review your own citations and references since WritePoint capability in this area is
limited. NOTE: WritePoint comments are computer-generated writing and grammar
suggestions inviting the consideration and analysis of the writer; they are not infallible
statements of right/wrong, and they should not be used as grading elements. Also, at
present, WritePoint cannot detect quotations or block-quotes, so comments in those areas
should be ignored. Please see the other helpful writing resources in the Tutorials and
Guides section of the Center for Writing Excellence. Thank you for using WritePoint.

Effective Statistical Methods for Population Research
The use of random sampling when studying both large and small control groups, is an
effective means of proving that the laws of probability can be used [The passive voice is a form
of "be" (be) and a participle (used). Over-use of the passive voice can make paragraphs
officious and tedious to read. Prefer the active voice. For example, passive voice = The
paper was completed on time. Active voice = the student completed the paper on time. See

Active & passive voice] effectively to draw accurate conclusions in the life sciences today.
Populations Observed
Using birth and fetal death records from the Washington State Department of Health, the
population observed in Fetal Deaths and Proximity to Hazardous Waste Sites in Washington
State, were the women whose infants died at 20 weeks or more, a total of 7054 cases, selected
randomly between the years of 1987-2001. [Writing suggestion: If this sentence is as long as
50 or more words, it can be confusing because it can have logic twists, recursions, or long
lists. Cut it into shorter sentences featuring one idea. Shorter sentences are easier to
comprehend (Mueller, 2007). In the article, Intensive Lipid Lowering With Atorvastatin in
Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Diabetes, and Chronic Kidney Disease, the population
that was studied consisted of 10,001 patients with coronary artery disease and was conducted
between July 1998 and December 1999. (Shepherd, MD PhD, Kastelein, MD, & Bittner, MD,
2008). The effectiveness of both studies was due in large part to the relative frequency
approximation of probability. (BOOK, pg. 93) Sarah, Perrla wouldnt let me cite more
references during my Perrla trial so this is just our text here.

My Conclusion

Of all the criteria used, such as different events, population size and method of
research chosen, the results from the larger population studied were more concise and had the
tendency to be more beneficial to the patients treated. [Sentence too long] Suggestions??
If anything seems lame to you, feel free to tell me. Believe it or not, I had over 300
