Todays lesson expands on ways of introducing oneself. After reviewing the previously taught self intro-
duction pattern (see chart below), we introduce a pattern of self introduction using the J apanese verb iu - to
say. This pattern provides the basis for an extremely polite self introduction used in business and formal
situations. This introduction includes humble language (kensongo or kenfgo), which is used when de-
scribing ones actions or the actions of a person in ones in-group to others such as customers in business.
Humble language tends to imply that ones actions are taking place in order to assist the other person.
Here let us quickly recap the ways to introduce oneself. Please notice that while the translation doesnt
change Ior the fnal construction, the politeness level is much higher than the previous two patterns.

Todays second grammar point is the phrase wake niwa ikanai, which indicates that someone cannot do
something due to outside Iactors or infuence. It is appended to verbs in their plain Iorm, and in such cases,
when it Iollows verbs in their plain aIfrmative Iorm, it is oIten translated as 'can`t very well ~~. As can
be seen in the chart below.
