Dear Friends in Christ,
On Christmas morning about 9 O'clock an airliner touched dovjn at
the Oklahoma City Airport Howard had completed almost three months and
16,000 miles on a special mission for Christ that had held many blessings,
many heartaches, and many victories for the Lord's work in Central Japan,
Some said, "Isn't it a shame that the Davises had just arrived in America
when the typhoon struck." In retrospect, though, we can only believe that
this too was the will of God, For as Howaf'd labored in Japan, Kathryn and
the family were able to work effectively in the United States, We feel to
gether we have completed this 'special task' Christ called us to do, and
things were set in order in the Central Japan Mission before Howard Return
ed to America and the family.
V7e cannot begin to express our thanks to all of you who answered
in such a wonderful and generous way, our pleas for help to Nagoya and
Nagashima. Jor can we in this short letter give you an adequate insight
into the , e f f ectiveness of v,^hat you did by your gifts in the name of Christ,
THEREFORE:
Vie are printing seperatly a complete and detailed report of what
was done in Central Japan from the dark hours just following the typhoon
until Howard arrived back in Oklahoma, This report will neJessarily repeat
some of the things you have already heard, but will also bring you a first
hand report of the details and some of the 'behind the scene' work^of your
missionaries and the Japanese Christians, a
In order to avoid waste and duplication,y ap^d-'^^o conserve mission
funds, this report will be sent only upon request ,^'''^cept to the churches.
If you desire a copy, please request it by postcard and we will be happy to
mail it to you by return mail. You Vifill want a copy so please request it.
Onee again we are making an itiaerary. V/e wash to visit every
congregation who has shared with us in Christ's work and give a report of
what has been accomplished a.s well as discuss our future plans. However
time is short and we call upon you to help us accomplish our task as soon
as possible. Ordinarily a missionary ust spend from 15 to 18 months visit
ing the churches, but we would like to be back in Japan in just 10 months
to resume our work. In view of the present situation and by the fact that
there are no other missionaries working with us in the Nagoya area, we
feel a short furlough advisable.
O
In order to reach all our supporting churches we will have to
maintain a very full schedule including week nights - even Saturday night
services if possible# We ask your cooperation in this^ and though we know
most would prefer us to come on a Sunday, please help us to get back to
Japan early by allowing us to share a week night with you if need be#
A questionnaire is being sent to each church to try to deter
mine just when our visit would be the most convenient for you#
FAMILY FOOTNOTES:
Judy and Bill continue to make frequent trips to Nagoya to help
in the work until, we return to the field this fall.
The week following Christmas we took a rest at Kathryn's sister's
'cabin on the lake' in eastern Oklahoma# The past three months had been a
heavy strain on the whole family, and we welcomed the chance to rest# Now
we feel refreshed and ready to resume the heavy schedule of the months
ahead#
We were made very proud of Irene recientlyshe was chosen 'Girl
of the Month' of Capitol Hill Jr# High School--a school of about 2000#
Kenny had his ^th birthday January 13th, his first in America#
he is becoming completly 'merican' even to memorizing all the popular
T.V. commercials on Cerials, bread, etc#
All the family joins in thanking you for the nice Christmas
cards, presents, and for the money sent as Christmas gifts# You gave us
a very wonderful Christmas - thanks so much#
Again v/e wish to express our thanks to all of you for the
trust you have placed in us as we serve as your representatives in
Christ, especially through this past three months#
Yours in Christian Love,
Howard & Kathryn Davis

Dear Friends in Christ,
"It is well said that time flies like an arrow. It is almost five months
since the great typhoon visited our districts. The terrible memories of
the people seem to have gone little by little. We must thank God, many
people have drawn nearer to church. On January 3rd we had a New Year's
meeting in Nagashina together with Higashi and Mukojima Church members.
IfVa thanked God for the beginning of the year, that we had been able to
plough through the hardships after the disaster and prayed we could live
happy strong lives in the faith of the Lord."
These are the words of Hatori San, one of our Christian men in Nagashima.
From his letter, those of Karuki San, and Bill & Judy we can piece to
gether a thrilling story of the march of Christianity in Central Japan.
Truly, God has showered His blessings in answer to you who have gone so
many times before the throne of grace in our behalf. ViTe have asKed many
times for your prayers, and the contents of this letter is evidence that
you heard our requests and that God answers prayer in a way more wonder
ful than we can imagine. To all of you we say 'Thank you', and please
keep praying, .
Maruki San writes that the boxes from the American Churches keep pouring
in, and as soon as they arrive they are taken to Nagashima and Mukojima
for distribution to those in Need, The boxes are vitamin, boxes of food,
boxes of new and used clothing, and bedding & blankets. One shipment was
250 lbs of food "fromf the church at PlainviiVle Kansas. This was shipped
by ocean freight and cleared the customs house free of duty charge.
Thanks to you folk of Plainville, and the many others who have shared
so -generously v;ith the unfortunate of Central Japan,
Because of the demonstration of Christianity during the clean-up and the
relief distribution the attendance at Nagashima has increased steadily,
making it necessary to purchase 20 nev; chairs for the church. Sunday
School has been divided into two periods 8:30 "to 900 for the younger
children 9:30 to 10:30 for the young people and adults. Church services
begin at 10:30. On Thursday a nev; adult Bible Class has been started
most of those attending are nev; people.
Bill 8c Judy made a recent trip to Nagoya and Nagashima and were enthusi
astic in their reports to us about the progress of the churches. Also
they say the Christians are doing a wonderful job of the relief work.
Howard is just recovering from a seige of the flu that made it necessary
to cancel 2 weeks of speaking dates. Now he is preparing to begin again
the visits to the churches to show the 8mra film of the typhoon destruc
tion and clean up work.
SPECIAL PRAYER REqUEST: Nr. 'Jilliara Cox, father of Ople Stevens passed
away about 3:30 AM March ''hth after suffering a heart attack k hours

prayers at this time.

Church is a 70 year old widow who has spent many hours making 'otedama'
for the children of Nagashima. 'Otedama' are something like bean bags
using small stones instead of beans for filling. The otedama are very
popular toys of the Japanese children, Mrs. Yoshida has made over 500
of these toys and distributed them among the children of Nagashima who
lost so much in Typhoon Vera,
Please continue to i^ray for us a.nd these of Central Japan, that God will
hurry the day we can return to Japan and that He will call other workers
to that needy field.

We received a list of that arrived from America These boxes are taken

who sent boxes to Japan -- we thank you for your sharing and for giving an
added opportunity to spread the the gospel story of Christ
Here in America, the Davises^.ontinue to visit among the churches, reporting-
on the work in Central Japan., True, is a bit different from the"
ordinary missionary presentation, for it is a complete film story starting
with the actual misery, death., and destruction of Typhoon Vera and following
through a thrilling account of the work of the Japanese Christians as the'

The tour of the churches in Oklao, Kansas, &Missouri is almost completed and
when school is out, churches in the north and east v;ill be visited
We are enjoying our visits among' the churches and v/ith each one of you If

Dear Chriatian Frienda,
These first two months hack in Japan have been very busy and very trying days for us
but now things are beginning to fall into a pattern, and thanks to you folk who share
"this work with us, we will soon have the replacement of the equipment and supplies
lost in the sinking of the ship. The insurance recovery amoxmted to $2000, That plus
your generous contributions have made possible the replacement of equipment, supplies,
and personal losses. We appreciate so very much your help in our time of need, but
words cannot really express our thanks to you.
lb are happy to announce to you who share in this work with us that
we will have an addition to the working staff during the summer months,
Mark Layman vrtio is no stranger to missionary work will come to Japan
during his vacation from Midwest Christian College. Mark's experience
as &missionary in the Kiamichi Mounta5.ns, especially working with his
father (Lawrence Layman) will be put to good use in our heavy schedule
here this summer. The Central Japan Christians and the Davises are
looking forward with anticipation to the summers work with Brother
Layman. Until the first of June Mark is speaking in behalf of the Cen
tral Japan work. If you want to hear an inspirational message from
a young man bent on serving Christ to the fullest, then call on this
missionary speaker to visit your church. You can reach him by writing: Mark Layman,
Box 9665, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
New services started in the Central Japan area since our return, include three week
ni^t Bible Classes, and beginning the first Sunday in May Howard & Kathryn will take
over the church in Moriyama. We will try to give a more detailed report on our work
and activities when things have retiffned to normal around the Davis household. Latest
word is that we will be receiving our shipment of equipment and supplies sometime
around the first of June. Until then we ask your continued patience and prayers, that
the Lord will use us effectively in spite of the shortage of supplies and equipment.
Again, we thank you for your concern and prayers in our material loss.
Yours in Christ,
Dear Friends:

Dear Friends in Christ,
OCTOBER i960
Our time in the States is rapidly drawing to a close. It has been over nine
months since Howard returned to America, but still there are many things yet
undone. The Lord's blessings have been greater than our fondest dreams and
the joys we have known traveling among the churches, visiting you who share
in the Lord's work with us, has been wonderful. We thank God for so many
faithful friends and co-laborers.
Our last news letter carried news of our little grand-daughter born in Japan.
Judy's letters tell us little Kathryn Gracia is doing well, and we want to
thank all who offered prayers in her behalf, for God heard and answered.
J^^pt is attending Midwest Christian College here in Oklahoma City, and will
/remairi in the States when we return to Japan. Schooling, even in our Christian
Colleges is quite expensive, but again the Lord provided! The gypJt>-CJ^woh_ pf

friends. Lorraine Gundrum was a class mate in our ovm days at Midwest. In
fact, we have known many of the members of this congregation for several years
and have enjoyed their material and prayer sharing in the work out in Central
Japan from the beginning of our service there. We join Janet in sending a
special 'Thank You' to this congregation.
Plans are taking shape for our return to Central Japan, but as yet we do not
have a definite sailing date. When we returned to the States we came by
Transocean Air Lines. Passage on T.O.A.L. was cheaper than on an American
freighter, but the company has since gone bankrupt, so we must seek another
means of returning to the field. However, the Lord willing, we will leave Okla
homa City in December and arrive in Japan in January. That will be jist over
one year for Howard to be oUt Of Japan (anecessary consideration in income
t^. re-entry, customs, and the mission equipment taken into the country).
received some wonderful word from Central Japan last week. Mr.Yuse the
minister of the Mukojima Church held the evangelistic meetings for the mission
year and in the Mukojima meeting there were twelve converalQus! In Japan
is a wonderful step_ forward in the Lord's woiTl?v Yuyy tiajr'ls in his third
year of Bible College and one of our most valuable workers for Christ, someday
to be one of the leaders in our preacher and church leaders training program.
God has blessed us richly beyond all we could ever hope for or ask. His
answer to prayer makes us realize a deep sense of responsibility to you who
pray with us for His victory in Central Japan, and makes us realize over and
over again our greatest need is your prayers.
Yours in Christ's service,
Howard &Kath^n Davis

Dear Fellow Missionary,
A need has been expressed by several of our mutual minister friends
for story illustrations from the actual experien-i^es of the mission
aries, to use in the pulpit V/e kr;ow that you are as anxious as
we, to keep the congregations reminded of Christ's work at home
and abroadt. So, with no cost to you, except a bit of your time,
we have started work compiling a book of missionary illustrationso
The illustrations will be arranged under a wide range of topics
and cross referenced so they may be used by choice of topic or
the particular field desiredo Each v/ill carry the missionary-s
name and will be printed to the best advantage to put your part
of Christ's work before the people in the churcheso
We would like to have as many illustrations as you would care to
submit. There is room for every topic and phase of the Lord's
wcrk and message and length can range from twenty-five words
tc three hundred, or if necessary, longer^ 'God s answer to
prayer', 'Special victories by converts', '-'the missionary's
dependencfc on faith', are but a few of the topa's that can be
used. Stories and illustrations used in your speaking tcurs
in the States can be used if you like, for once told does net
make them obsolete. We will make sver^- effort to use all. the
material submitted, and if possible we would iide every direct
support missionary and field to be represented. One request we
would like to make; that where necessary we be allowed the
privilege of editing in order to maintain one set of standards
through out the book.
January 1st has been set as a dead line, but we hope to begin
work the first of December, so may we urge you to "do it now"
and share with the other missionaries in writing this interesting
and helpful book. Of course YOUR contribution is of more import
ance than the time, so if you need more time please let us know
and space will be reserved until your submition arrives,
please pray with us that God may use 'Missionary Ill-ustrations'
to the glory of His Kingdom through out the world.
SEND TO?
Yours in Christ
