Kelly Atkinson Selected
for Cleaning Industry
Pinnacle Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 19, 2014
The Simon Institute is pleased to an-
nounce that Kelly Atkinson has been
selected to be awarded the prestigious
Pinnacle Award for 2014. The Pinnacle
Award recognizes Outstanding Con-
tributions to the Cleaning Industry and
the (OS1) Program. It is also the only
award in the cleaning industry that is rec-
ognized by representative benchmarking
organizations managing cleaning opera-
tions on a peer review basis.
Organizations and leaders who have
attended Janitor University have been
polled and selected Kelly Atkinson, by
secret ballot, to honor his industry-wide
contributions.
Atkinson worked his way through col-
lege as a middle school janitor. In 1975 he
became a eld representative for the Utah
School Employees Association (USEA).
He eventually became the Executive Di-
rector of the organization in 1989 and
retired from the organization in 1997.
While working at USEA, Kelly was elected
to the Utah House of Representatives. He
served from 1986 until 1996. From 1990
to 1996, he was elected by his colleagues
as the Minority Whip of in the House of
Representatives. During his term of ofce
he was named four times by the Deseret
News as one of the most effective legisla-
tors on Capitol Hill. He was twice named
Utahs Legislator of the Year.
Kelly sponsored legislation that led to
a stafng study for Utah schools K-12 in
1985. He also sponsored a series of pro-
ductivity grants that developed front-
line custodial training programs. These
training programs were adopted by Utah
school districts to advance the profes-
sionalism of janitors. ManageMen was
the recipient of several of these study and
training grants between 1985-1998. The
stafng study was expanded and was the
basis for ISSAs Ofcial Cleaning Times
books series. The Custodial Develop-
ment training programs were utilized as
resources for both ISSA and ManageMen
training materials in the 1990s.
Kelly is heavily involved in humanitar-
ian services as a Rotarian. In 2004-2005
he served as Governor of District 5420
Utah. As Governor of Rotary in Utah,
he successfully brought the International
Convention to the State. He raised more
than a half $1 million to host the event
and the conference is still rated by Rotar-
ians worldwide as one of the nest ever
held.
Since 1985 Kelly has acted as an advi-
sor to ManageMen on various projects to
modernize cleaning operations, develop
standards, support legislation and im-
prove union issues. He is a 2012 graduate
of Janitor University.
Kelly will be presented the Pinnacle
Award at the Cleaning Industry Awards
Banquet during the Simon Institute
Symposium at the Menger Hotel in San
Antonio, Texas, on Monday, July 14, 2014.
Presentation of the award will be by the
2013 Pinnacle Award honoree, Jim Alty.

2014 (OS1) Trainer Course
Education Is Not Received,
It Is Achieved
By Guido Piccarolo
Los Angeles Habilitation House
I used to measure the success of a
training course on several factors. One
of these factors, probably the main one,
has been my personal (as a business
owner of a non-prot organization) re-
turn on the investment made to be at
the training. In other words, the extent
to which my personal objectives were
achieved.
This holds true for the 2014 (OS1)
Trainer Course in Orlando, Florida, as
all of my goals were achieved! How-
ever, attending this course brought a
new light into my experience of how
to evaluate the full success of a training
course. The (OS1) Trainer Course offers
the only rst class journey (knowledge
and tool) to allow a Janitorial Trainer to
be able to implement the experience of
the 3-day course once back to the ofce.
Albert Einstein is quoted as say-
ing, Education is not received. It is
achieved. And this is true for the 3-day
course I attended in Florida. During
this course, we have been given knowl-
edge (meaning of things) and tools to
achieve professional educational in or-
der to become a professional janitor.
The six rules for training and educat-
ing adults, the setup of a training room,
the boot camp timeline for specialized
cleaning workers, the three legged stool,
and the verication of basic training
were some of the essential topics that
allow myself, a trainer, not to be lost in
the confusion of the typical after train-
ing question: And now how do I do it?
The journey is set and I want to keep
walking!

ManageMen Lays Groundwork
For Pilot Program at UNCC
By Ben Walker
Last month, a ManageMen team con-
sisting of Alan Bigger, Tim Poskin and
Ben Walker visited University of North
Carolinas Charlotte campus to begin
the evaluation and planning stages of
UNCCs upcoming (OS1) Pilot Program.
ManageMen introduced the (OS1) pilot
to three different cleaning shifts, clean-
ing managers and hosted an introducto-
ry brieng for several high-level execu-
tives at the university. Additionally, the
initial workloading for potential pilot
and roll out sites was accomplished dur-
ing this visit. Finally, an (OS1) Baseline
Audit and an APPA appearance levels
audit was conducted. This will help de-
termine good baseline data moving for-
ward. UNCC is preparing for their initial
(OS1) start-up.

Three Legged Stool presented
at the Florida APPA Annual
Educational Conference
____________________________
On May 15th, 2014, I presented the
Three Legged Stool of Cleaning at the
Florida APPA Annual Educational
Conference hosted by Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University. The Three
Legged Stool of Cleaning was a natural
selection for the Building Services edu-
cational track.
There were several universities that
stayed after the presentation to ask
some great questions:
How are people held accountable?
Who does the training?
Where does the group meet to bench-
mark?
Nobody disputed that utilizing an
engineered process, with scientic vali-
dation, and a high level of professional-
ism to achieving cleaning is a great idea.
Most people who attended the presen-
tation wondered why someone hasnt
come up with this solution before to-
day.
This is a very powerful message and
the more we network in the higher edu-
cation sector, the more we can spread
the word. It was exciting to present the
Thee Legged Stool of cleaning to orga-
nizations that struggle with delivering
service on a daily basis.

Ask Maria
QUESTION:
I have a question pertaining to Light
Duty Specialist microber towels usage
procedure.
When cleaning a lunch room area with
many tables and chairs, the table tops are
wiped down with the microber towels
and 102 cleaner. Immediately following
the table top, the custodian wipes off the
chair seats. If the microber does not ap-
pear dirty, is there any problem with us-
ing the same portion of the cloth to wipe
down the next tabletop right after wiping
down chair seats?
ANSWER:
There is no problem using the cloth if
the table and chairs looked clean before
they were wiped down. If there is gross
matter or any other visible soil that is
wiped up, the cloth needs to be folded
over.
The side of a microber cloth is a
pretty cheap cleaning tool, compared
to a sponge or pad, so cleaning workers
should be encouraged to turn the cloth
over and refold whenever they think they
need to do it. Its better to use a lot of
clean sides than cross-contaminate to re-
duce refolding or fresh cloths.
NOTICE
Janitor University will be
