wellbore and surface production systems;
economic impact of operating plans;
identifying and acquiring critical data, data acquisition and analysis;
monitoring economic recovery and maximising capital and operating expenses;
timing of field implementation of reservoir management plan;
case histories and analysis;
Responsibilities for team members.

Methods of Learning, Teaching and Assessment
Total student effort for the module: 100 hours on average.
Teaching & Learning:
1. 20, 1h lectures. This method informs learning outcomes 1, 2, 3.
2. 6, 2h small group meetings and practical computer laboratory sessions for a
significant reservoir management problem. This method informs learning outcomes 3,
4, 5, 6, 7.

Assessment:
1. A 120 minute unseen written examination. This method carries 60% of the total
mark and assesses learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, 7.
2. A group project where students solve a significant reservoir management problem,
marks will be awarded for an individual poster presentation on the group project and
individual technical contribution as outlined in a brief report (1000 words). This
method carries 40% of the total mark and assesses learning outcomes, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Model Answer

Question no. 1:

a. It is undersaturated black oil reservoir fluid.

b. The max. drawdown could be applied to ensure single phase
flow through the reservoir is from P
A
to BPP (saturation
pressure).

c. It remains all liquid (expanding slightly) as pressure drops to
the bubble point. At the bubble point, gas begins to form and
more gas evolves as pressure is depleted below the bubble
point. As gas evolves, the composition of the gas begins light
and becomes gradually heavier. At point B the fluid is about
80% liquid and 20% gas by volume.

d. Since the reservoir fluid is categorized as undersaturated
and if the natural driving mechanism (s) are not sufficient to
prevent the depletion effect, so it is important to implement a
pressure maintenance program (by water injection) to
sustain the reservoir pressure around the BPP.
This would :
1) Prevent forming a likely secondary gas cap.
2) Achieving a production plateau for longer time.
3) Maximize the ultimate oil recovery (40%).

Question no. 2:
A) a. Reservoir management is a static process. (F)

b. Reservoir management involves making certain choices.
Either let it happen or make it happen. (T)
c. The components of the reservoir management process are
independent. (F)
d. Well spacing is larger for developing gas reservoirs than
that needed to develop oil reservoirs.(T)
e. The reservoir management team is fixed since the early
exploitation stage to the abandonment. (F)

B) a. * Interval 1,2 and 5 are contributing to the well production.

Interval Production Contribution %
1 40
2 14
5 46

* Interval (3 and 4) are not productive. This is supported
by the relatively higher GR reading.
