Castle Island Book Club: Faith in the Face of Empire: The Bible
through Palestinian Eyes by Mitri Raheb
Saturday, July 26, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Book discussion and picnic
Meet at Castle Island near Sullivans via own transportation. Food may be purchased at
Sullivans or bring your own lunch and a beach chair or blanket. Pre-registration requested.
Book is available at Amazon.com (paperback $14.76, Kindle $9.99) Note: Paperback is 160 pages.
Book must be read before joining the discussion group.
Dr. Raheb writes in practical terms of the role of faith in action in forming an new future for not only
Palestine, but the Middle East. His focus is on the internal map each person must develop for her/himself. The way to
freedom, equality, and self determination starts inside every person. Real change comes from within, as Jesus said often.
And that starts with faith. But it is not only faith, as Dr Raheb points out, but informed faith. One needs to look soberly
on the history of the region, as he does in this text, in order to understand that the only solutions that will last are those
emanating from the region itself. Empires come and go. Their brilliant solutions for those under their domination also
come and go. The people of the region will devise their own future, if left to it. But first they must search within themselves
for what they truly want the future to look like. Dr. Raheb provides a roadmap to do just that.
About the author: Dr. Mitri Raheb, A Palestinian Christian theologian, is the President of Dar al-Kalima University College
in Bethlehem as well as president of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. He
serves as the Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, Palestine.

A Story of Love
What is the Holy Trinity and why do we dedicate a
big Sunday to it?
i know a story that might help.
Once upon a time, in fact once upon many
thousand times, God the Father invited the people
of the earth to a lasting and loving
relationship. Look at the Old
Testament: i want to be your God
and i want you to be my people. My
love for you is tender and precious.
Wont you love me in return?
in many ways people understood and
entered into the agreement.
Abraham, isaac, Moses, Elisha, Elijah,
just to begin the list.
But we humans keep choosing things
closer to hand, like money and honors
and suchbarns full of them. Our
refusal of Gods love became
widespread.
How did God react to such rejections?
With hurt and disappointment for sure.
My people, what have i done to you? How
have i offended you? Answer me. For your
sake i scourged your captors and their first-
born sons, but you brought your scourges
down on me! My people, answer me (from
The Reproaches on Good Friday)!
No answer. So eventually the Father tried a new
and quite brilliant way. i will show them what
true love looks like. Since i am all love and nothing
but love, i will go out to them utterly, as love does.
i will become one of them. i will live humanity to
its depths, and they will see love in its full truth.
Spirituality of the Readings
So a human called Jesus was born. He grew up.
He told the people to love God above all things and
their neighbors as themselves. He was the very
heart of God, the heart made flesh. One with the
Father but different as well. Two persons in one
God.
Human beings had been hurt and betrayed, of
course, forced to live with their own mixed-up
motives, selfishness and greed. Love gets lost in
such a world. So Jesus-God plunged far into our
ocean of cruelty and loss, dove all the way to down
to death.
His job was to carry all this back to the source of
everything, the Father. The disciples knew about
only two parts of God, Jesus and his Abba. So
before he left, he said the following to them (i am
paraphrasing):
Philip and the rest of you, if you
know me, you know the Father.
And after i go back to the Father, i
will remain within you. i will
make a home in you by sending
the Holy Spirit. This Comforter
will be the very love that i and the
Father have for each other!
He was talking of course about the
third person of the Trinity, the Holy
Spirita real being that snuggles
close within our souls if we let it. This
Spirit of love is graceful and deep and
comforting, like a blanket in winter
cold.
And that is the story. Alright, maybe it is less clear
than we would like. Really it is just the story of our
lives with God and each other.
it is the Trinity! Let us celebrate!

The papacy of Pope Francis has brought new energy
and excitement to many in the Church. The Franciscan
community gladly joins him in his call for a new
evangelization. in this spirit, Holy Name Province has
prepared a number of brief reflections on elements of
Pope Francis statements and writings, particularly
Evangelii Gaudium.
Francis, A Man of Peace
By Ken Himes, OFM
March 2014
At the time of his election one
item that grabbed attention was
the new popes choice of name
and explanation for why he chose
it. in a press conference three days
after his election he related that a cardinal sitting
next to him at the time of his election, turned to him
and hugged him and then whispered, Don't forget
the poor. The pope then said, right away, thinking
of the poor, i thought of Francis of Assisi. Then i
thought of all the wars . . . Francis is also the man of
peace. That is how the name came into my heart:
Francis of Assisi.
Pope Francis identifies with Francis of Assisi in part
because of his desire to promote and build peace.
One of his earliest statements called for a global day
of fasting and prayer for the cause of peace in Syria.
He has made statements about the hope of
reconciliation and peace in a number of countries,
most recently Ukraine.
An extended statement of Franciss views can be
found in his exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The
Joy of the Gospel). in that statement he linked
violence and inequality. Until exclusion and
inequality in society and between people are
reversed, it will be impossible to eliminate violence.
And inequality eventually engenders a violence
which recourse to arms cannot and never will be able
to resolve. For Francis, as long as there is dramatic
inequality violence will break out again and again no
matter how much military force is used to suppress
it.
On New years Day Francis presented his message
for the annual World Day of Peace. Hearkening back
to the spirit of Francis of Assisi and that saints
tendency to address people as Brother and
Sister, the pope entitled his message, Fraternity,
the Foundation and Pathway to Peace. Peace,
according to the pope, requires that we see other
people not as enemies or rivals, but as brothers and
sisters to be accepted and embraced. Where
previous popes like John Paul ii and Benedict Xvi
used the word solidarity to convey the idea that
we are all connected and interdependent, Francis
chose fraternity to make a similar point. At the
root of the problem of violence is the refusal to see
the other as a fellow son or daughter of God, a
brother or sister. violence is enabled when we only
look at the other as an enemy, a threat, a source of
fear and, therefore, someone who must be subjected
to violence in order to punish and deter.
Pope Francis offers a vital lesson to be remembered.
More than ethical arguments about just wars and
pacifism are needed. More than diplomatic
negotiations over the arms race and disarmament are
necessary. There is nothing wrong with these things,
of course, but they are insufficient without A
conversion of hearts, that would permit everyone
to recognize in the other a brother or sister to care
for, and to work together with, in building a fulfilling
life for all. Francis of Assisi and Francis of Rome
both call for a fundamental stance of fraternity and
sorority in our outlook toward others.
More recent developments....
During his trip to the Holy Land (May 24-26, 2014),
Pope Francis invited the israeli and Palestinian
presidents (Pres. Abbas of Palestine and Pres. Peres of
israel) to pray with him at the vatican on Pentecost
Sunday, June 8 (as this Bulletin issue is going to press).
Both accepted his invitation. At the prayer service,
after each of them offered remarks, the leaders
exchanged kisses on the cheek and handshakes then
grabbed shovels to help plant an olive tree (a sign of
peace). Both had a chance to meet together privately
with the Pope after the prayer ceremony in the
gardens of the vatican.
