Ney

One of the oldest instruments in existence, the Ney has been played for about 5000
years. Its distinguished sound reminiscent of deserts and oasis, this instrument can
add an ethnic flavor to your compositions that is unmatched in its deep soulfulness
and truthful timbre. The Neys breathy tone will transport you to ancient times and
faraway places and capture your audience with an enchanting quality.

In line with previous Sonokinetic libraries such as the classical Kemene, Shahrazad
and Sultan Drums, this Ney is captured in high fidelity audio quality, and it ships with
a built-in musical heritage. Our Ney player Ahmet Cemal Oksuz blessed us with a
deep understanding of both traditional heritage and a cinematic approach with
regards to his playing. The instrument is a perfect match with the styles and flavors
in other Sonokinetic ethnic sampled instrument and vocals.
For this production we sampled phrases in different Makams (middle eastern scales)
using proprietary Ney flutes, the Neys used are Mansur, Kz, Bolhenk, Husseini
and Siprde. For the playable legato and staccato instrument we focused on the
Mansur Ney, this being the most all-round of all the flutes, with the largest range.
This Ney sample library is based on musical structures similar to the ones found in
other Ethnic sampled instruments by Sonokinetic, making this a valuable addition to
and perfect match with your Sonokinetic sampling products. Based on more than 10
different styles these performances are divided in traditional songs and
improvisations. Where the songs focus more on melodies within a particularly
Middle Eastern tone scale, improvisations use this tone material focus on a more
cinematical melodic approach.
This instrument ships with an intelligent legato scripted instrument, giving you an
opportunity to play this instrument in real time and create your own melody lines,
complete with transition notes and looped sustains.
Recorded at Sonokinetic Studios in Istanbul with our renowned and awarded sound
team and Ney master Ahmet Cemal Oksuz, were very proud to release this unique
instrument. We hope it will give you as much inspiration as it gave us and will suit
your scoring template with elegance.

NEY INTERFACE
The main UI for Ney consists of several controls including Instrument / Phrase
selection, Impulse Response (reverb) control, Intelligent Time Machine, Breath
on/off switch and Velocity control for Staccato and Long articulations.
Phrases and Playable Instrument
Choose either performance-sampled Phrases that are divided in two sub groups
(Improvisations & Songs) or the playable instrument by clicking either button.


Phrases & Performances

Ney has 10 different styles included for
Songs and Improvisation. These styles
are named after the used Makam (scale).
These Makams all have their own
character. Weve produced all
improvisations and songs to be available
in all keys, and they will automatically
match the host tempo of your project.




Tempo Sync
Ney features adaptive tempo syncing which will lock the phrase playback to tempo
even if the host tempo is changing during playback.
In the full version of Kontakt 4 and 5 you will have alternative options for increasing
the efficiency and quality of the timestretching. Be aware that this can come at the
expense of system resources. For the best time stretching results we strongly
advise to load the Kontakt 5 TMP patches which use the Time machine Pro settings.
Intelligent Time Machine (ITM)
The ITM function syncs samples to half-time or
double-time when extreme tempo values are used.
This can also be turned off. Click the button to
enable / disable this feature. You may prefer to
have the ITM function turned off when using
adaptive temposyncing functions previously
mentioned, so that the samples do not suddenly
switch to half/double-time when manipulating
large tempo changes. Note that in the
improvisation section this might lead to different
samples being triggered because these are
recorded in two different root tempi and the
improvised phrases for the different tempi will be
different.

We found it particularly intuitive when composing to see what length
a phrase would be. Since not all phrases are cut out with computer
science in mind, they are more focused on musical and artistic
expression, theres a lot of variety in length and duration of a phrase.
Hence the Phrase Indicator that shows you the remaining length
by steadily following the phrase progression, this will appear in the
center bottom of the interface when a phrase is played. When it is
obscured by the Song list, just click the Song name again to hide
the scroll.
Impulse Response (IR)
Ney comes preloaded with a convolution reverb
sampled from an actual space to simulate a realistic
playing environment. Adjust the amount of reverb
added to the instrument by click-dragging on the knob
and turn it on or off by clicking the button.
From the Kontakt configuration window you can adjust many aspects of the reverb
including wet/dry levels, pre delay, dampening and width.
Mic positioning
You can move the slider to get your preferred mix
between the mono and stereo recorded signal.
Auto Breath
These trigger random breath noises to add a live feel to
your phrases. When activated it will play a sample of the
playing taking a breath in between phrases.
Velocity slider
The velocity slider will determine how velocity is handled
for Staccato and Long articulations in the playable
instrument. For more on this refer to the next section
(Playing Ney: Playable Instrument).
PLAYING NEY
PLAYABLE INSTRUMENT:

Legato

Ney has a 2,5 octave keyrange for the legato
instrument. Sustains will loop indefinitely, and a
release sound will be triggered on key release.

Legato transitions will trigger automatically as long
as the second note is played before the first is
released. Velocity for the legato patch is controlled
by mod wheel to allow for a full range of expression.
Blue keys mark the position of the playable zones in
the legato instrument. Polyphonic playing is not
possible in Legato mode, for polyphonic playing use
the Staccato or Long mode.


Staccato
Staccato notes have different round robins, so another sample
will be triggered when you press the key multiple times. These
short notes can be triggered simultaneously with legato or
sustained notes, to add a different attack to the note.

Long

Sustained notes that can be played simultaneously,
to simulate a group of players. No legato
transitions will be triggered. These samples are
not looped, they will end in a natural way when the
recorded length is reached.


FX
Recorded Fx sounds, categorized by sample length.
These sounds make your composition come alive
even more. Very effective when used tastefully and in
moderation.

Retrigger


The Yellow key, when pressed,
will retrigger the held note in a
legato fashion.



PHRASES
With the performance sampled phrases, Ney provides red colored key switches from
A0 to G#1 which will become yellow when selected:
Harmonic Key Display
Use the red keyswitches to set the root key of the
phrases then use the upper blue keys to trigger the
available phrases for that particular key in that tempo.
The Key is displayed in the bottom left corner of the
instrument. This harmonic key display changes
according to the harmonic key that is selected by the
red key switches on your keyboard. Phrases will
change pitch, depending on the keyswitch selected.
Tempo Display
The ITM button explained above will ensure that the phrases sync to your host
tempo in the most efficient way. To get a visual indication of how much stretch is
being applied, you can click the tempo box to toggle between recorded (root) tempo,
host (current) tempo and tempo stretch percentage.
IMPORTANT: in the Improvisations section, the number of phrases available
can vary depending on which tempo your host is set. There are
improvisations recorded in root tempo 120 and in root tempo 90, the closest
to your host tempo will be picked, and with ITM on, also closest to double and
half of host tempo. So with ITM off in host tempo 175 it will pick
improvisations recorded in 120 with a 45% stretch upwards, and with ITM on it
would pick root tempo 90 with a 3% stretch down.
Purging and Disc Usage
To save on system resources and RAM, Ney loads each set of phrases as they are
needed. Depending on your disc speed you may need to allow a few seconds for
these to load once you select a new set of phrases or select a new root pitch.
Modwheel functions
Legato samples: velocity function. To have full control over dynamic
behavior of your composition, and simulate the blowing of the player.
Staccato and Long samples: switchable between key velocity and mod
wheel velocity through the dedicated slider. With the slider all the way to
the left, velocity is purely controlled by key velocity, to the right by mod
wheel, and everything in between will be a mix between these two. This is
perfect for combining the control of mod wheel velocity with the variation
and human feel of key controlled velocity.
Songs & Improvisations: the mod wheel controls the sample starting point, so
moving the mod wheel up will start the phrase at a later position, ideal for when you
only need the end of a particular phrase.
