1. Deflection in both standard intermediate ceiling (36.51mm from STAAD) and
intermediate ceiling (38.71mm from STAAD) with ventilation opening exceeds the limit given in IS 456: 2000, Cl 23.2 i.e. 20mm in case of load combination considered in the Design Report. The basis of deflection and load combination under which deflection of 10 cm given in Design Report is not clear. Load combination of self weight + ventilation pressure / maintenance should be used for Serviceability Limit State. Reply: deflection in the STAAD for quasi permanent load combination is worked out as 20mm, which is well within limits. Please note maintenance load and ventilation cant be clubbed together as during maintenance, there shall not be any air pressure. 2. Characteristic Strength of concrete used in design report for M40 is 30 N/mm 2
whereas as per IS codes it should have been 40 N/mm 2 . Reply: Concrete C30/37 30Mpa is cylindrical strength & 37 MPa is cube strength. Design is carried out considering 37MPa; hence the use of M40 shall suffice all requirements. 3. Temperature loads are not included in any of load combinations.
Reply: Temperature, creep and shrinkage loads needs to be considered ONLY if the structure is more than 45m in length as per IS456 clause 19.5. Moreover, the structure is idealised as simply supported allowing expansion. Hence Temperature, creep and shrinkage loads can be ignored in combinations Ref. Load Case 7 of Page 9 of the report.
4. Worst load combination are not considered in design which will be self weight + maintenance load + ventilation pressure downward + temperature load in case of standard intermediate ceiling and self weight + motor and ventilation flap weight + ventilation pressure downward + temperature load in case of intermediate ceiling with ventilation openings.
Reply: as explained above (item 3) & the assumptions made, Temperature, creep and shrinkage loads will not generate any significant horizontal force as the slab is designed as simply supported . Thus, we do not envisage the above load combinations shall be critical.
5. Also the support width of 190mm on both ends seems to be on the lower side as the deflection in the slab is high. Reply: deflection is well with limit and we not envisage any issue as you have mentioned.
6. Reinforcement: (For given load combinations, it will further increase with load combination suggested above) i) Standard intermediate ceiling: Sofistik Staad Top: 10 @ 175 c/c along short span 10 @ 100 c/c along short span (10@125c/c as per GCI) 10 @ 200 c/c along long span 10 @ 200 c/c along long span Bottom: 20 @ 175 c/c along short span ( 16@125C/C as per GCI) 20 @ 175 c/c along short span 10 @ 200 c/c along long span 10 @ 200 c/c along long span
ii) Standard intermediate ceiling: Sofistik Staad Top: 10 @ 150 c/c along short span 10 @ 150 c/c along short span 10 @ 200 c/c along long span 10 @ 125 c/c along long span Bottom: 20 @ 150 c/c along short span 25 @ 150 c/c along short span 12 @ 200 c/c along long span 12 @ 175 c/c along long span 7. But the slab with openings fails in case of shear even with the above increased reinforcement. So, shear reinforcement may need to be provided. The shear stress is of the order of 1.18 N/mm 2 around opening along long span. Reply: We have reviewed our design and found that shear is well below permissible limit within capacity of the section. Normally, this kind of elements does not have issue with shear stress. Moreover, additional reinforcements around opening are already provided to cater the bending and shear stress around the opening.
8. Please note that all the above calculations / results are with load combinations given in Report. It will further increase with the above suggested worst load combination. Reply: ref all above.
