Grade5SummerPacketVocabulary

This is a preview of vocabulary that students will likely meet in the first
few months of 5th grade. It is recommended that students and
parents work together to translate this vocabulary into students
home languages, and discuss some of the topics together in home
languages. This will help students to develop their understanding of
the concepts they will be learning about in 5th grade. Having an
understanding of the concepts in their home languages will greatly help
students when they are expected to learn about them in English.

Science:MotionandDesign

Students will explore the physics of motion and apply concepts to technological
design. Students will investigate how objects move and what happens to them
when a force is added; for example, how they change speed and/or direction.
Students will investigate friction and gravity and how these affect motion.
Students will investigate simple machines and the ways in which these help to
change the direction of an applied force, and help transfer and change energy.

SocialStudies:Government

Students will learn ways in which societies create and adopt systems of
government. They will investigate the ways in which governments are organized
to meet the needs of their citizens and will reflect upon their own rights and
