is inclusive.
The awards jury cited L&Ts steadfast
commitment to CSR over the years. It
said that over 700,000 people among
the marginalised sections of the society
are beneficiaries of L&Ts on-going
interventions in education, skill building,
and mother & child care.
Some of the biggest and most respected
names from Corporate India constituted
the awards jury including: Kumar

Headed by Anshu Jain, the jury
identified governance as the over-
arching theme for the awards this
year and emphasised on the need to
implement stronger, more foolproof
mechanisms of corporate governance
across organisations. In selecting winners
for this years awards, it also factored in
elements such as sustainable business

The Corporate Citizen category in
which L&T won, witnessed a hearty
discussion on whether companies that
had incorporated sustainability into their
business model should be rewarded as
against companies that simply donated
money to build schools and hospitals.
Historically in developing economies
like India, organisations have often
deemed the broader community (of
which they are a part) and the issues
therein outside the scope of their business.
Even today, barring an extremely small
number, most companies in India neither
take into account their full impact on
society and environment nor do they
assume responsibilities that go beyond
plain commerce.
L&T belongs to a small minority
which believes in creating shared
value. A champion of the cause since its
earliest days, the Company has in place
corporate policies and practices that while
enhancing its competitiveness, also look
to advance the socio-economic realities of
the communities surrounding it.
L&Ts social responsiveness long
predates the entry of terms like CSR into
the corporate lexicon. The Company has
always believed in growth that is inclusive
and as a result reached out to assist
the communities in which it operates.
Whereas for others sustainability might

have been be an aferthought, for Larsen
& Toubro it has always been a part of the
collective character.
The Company invests in the growth
of communities around its campuses
through various social initiatives. Some
of the main thrust areas for L&T in the
recent years have been education, mother
& child healthcare, and skill building.
Its social interventions in education
are focused on providing primary
education, infrastructure development
and enhancing the learning experience
for children in schools in the vicinity of its
units across India. As part of its eforts, L&T
has also extended support to pre-schools,
assisted in infrastructure development,
and set up computer labs and libraries
as well as provided teaching-aids and
uniforms to the needy.
In terms of caring for the health of
young mothers and their children the
company has set up health centres with a
focus on reproductive health, conducted
diagnostic and clinical health camps that
support maternal and child health care,
immunisation and health education.
L&T is one of the few construction
organisations in India with dedicated
skill training institutes which ofer the
prospect of subsequent employment with
contractors at the Companys project sites.
It provides formal vocational training in
construction for the largely unorganised
workforce in this sector through
Construction Skills Training Institute
(CSTI). Besides, it has also introduced
vocational training programmes in
tailoring, beautician skills, home nursing
and food processing for women as such
training helps build self-reliance among
the marginalised.
An employee volunteering initiative,
also known as L&T-eering, has been
institutionalised as a company-wide
movement driven solely by the passion
to serve communities. This is further
aided by diferent chapters of L&Ts Ladies
Clubs, led by the spouses of Company
employees across various locations.
These Ladies Clubs pool their skills and
resources in the spirit of service to work
towards the development of communities.
The Larsen & Toubro Public Charitable
Trust (LTPCT) committed to the inclusive
growth of society through interventions
in education, vocational training, health
care and water management adds yet
another dimension to the community
service eforts of the Company.
Caring for the environment is
integral to L&Ts CSR agenda and the
Green Philosophy acts a compass for
the Companys future sustainability
roadmap. Some of the more visible
examples of this are seen across its
construction businesses where L&T
now lays a great deal of emphasis on
eco-friendly construction. L&T has built
more certied green buildings than any
other company. Its ambitious Metro Rail
project in Hyderabad is expected to help
make the city green, reduce automobile
trafc, save fuel and arrest greenhouse
gas emissions. In Mumbai, L&Ts mono
rail project is expected to deliver similar
results when operational.
In the last few years, L&T has taken
the lead in building solar PV power plants
and providing solutions for desalination,
wastewater re-cycling and re-use for
wastewater treatment. Its Hydrocarbon
business has a long track record of EPC
execution of projects for fuel switch,
dehydrogenation and desulphurisation
for fertiliser manufacturers and reneries.
Another example of L&Ts concern for

environment can be seen in its Power
Business where it ofers the supercritical
solution. Supercritical thermal power
plants use steam in a way that improves
the turbine cycle heat rate which reduces
carbon dioxide emissions as well as other
lifecycle costs such as land and water.
L&Ts focus on sustainability can also
be seen across its Heavy Engineering
Business where under a technical tie-up
with Shell, the Company manufactures
and supplies equipment that helps to
derive gas from coal. This is one of the
many ways in which L&T is helping reduce
dependency on a single, increasingly
nite fuel source. Besides, a range of
products in the Companys electrical &
automation portfolio is helping industries
and domestic consumers at home and
commercial complexes increase the levels
of energy efciency.
The Company has aligned itself with
several National Action Plan Missions
as part of its CSR and Sustainability
efforts. These include a considerable
amount of work in areas such as Solar
Energy, Creating Sustainable Habitats,
Water Conservation, Adoption of Green
Methodologies, Sustainable Agriculture,
Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem, &
Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change.

Minister of India in the National Action
Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
At the core of L&Ts continued push
towards CSR lies a set of principles which
serve as both guide as well as inspiration
for the Company to play a more vital
role in serving the communities and
the environment. If funding initiatives
which contribute to social welfare and
community development is considered
a measure of CSR, then by that count
during 2012-13, L&T contributed as much
as Rs. 73.04 crore towards causes in four
focus areas i.e. education, skill-building,
healthcare and environment. However, to
dene L&Ts CSR mission with stats such
as this would be unfair. CSR at L&T is
neither driven by an economic necessity
nor a forced-upon mandate. Rather it is
driven by an evolved ideology of creating
shared value, an inherent sense of moral
responsibility and a culture of giving back
to the community. Afer all, we believe
that businesses rather than charities can
be more efective in addressing many
of the pressing issues facing our society.
On-going interventions in mother and child health by L&T have beneted wide cross-section
of the community.
A Tale of Two CSRs
A
bbreviations are always tricky
in communications. By FM
you could be referring to the
Finance Minister, while the audience
thinks you are talking about radio. IR
could stand for Industrial Relations
or relations with the body of investors,
and KG is a unit of weight as much as
the class where we all began the long
march of education. But perhaps no
short form in recent times has triggered
as many waves of misunderstanding
and confusion as CSR. Everyone
agrees on the C - thats Corporate for
sure. It is what follows that has had led
to varying interpretations.
We are not authorities on either
subject, but from what we have
gathered from the experts (our CSR
Dept. at Powai), here is a dollop of
gyan. CSR could be Corporate Social
Responsibility. Covering all that an
organisation does for the community,
it includes our various Health Centres,
the assistance we provide to schools, our
skills-training institutes, etc. The same
three letters are also taken to mean
Corporate Sustainability Reporting.
This means reporting on everything
that an organisation does to ensure its
sustainability or continued existence.
The denitions get a little clouded
here because of an overlap. Correctly
interpreted, Sustainability encompasses
social aspects within its fold. It forms
one side of the sustainability triangle
- the other two being Environment
and Business Protability. That is
because the gurus who rst conceived
Sustainability realised that no
organisation can hope to thrive in the
long term if it has an unsupportive and
hostile community around it (the Naxal
issue bedeviling some districts in India
is a reminder to all of us that progress
needs to be inclusive).
This tale of the two CSRs wont be
complete without the postscript that
whichever way you interpret it, L&T
has an excellent score card in both.
We had reached out to society decades
ago and across the decades have built
a reputation for fair business dealings.
As for Sustainability, we were the
rst company in the engineering &
construction space in India to report on
our performance.

Modular Fabrication
Facilities
The capability to carry out modular
fabrication complements L&Ts broad
range of oferings for the hydrocarbon
upstream sector. L&T has three modular
fabrication facilities - each strategically
selected for proximity to major oil & gas
elds and allied maritime infrastructure.
Located on the Tapti river at Hazira near
Surat, L&Ts Hazira Modular Fabrication
Facility (MFF) has unimpeded passage
to the Arabian Sea 8 km away. Set up
in 1988, it has set multiple benchmarks
in fabricating and loading out ofshore /
onshore oil & gas structures for ONGC and
other oil & gas majors. With an annual
fabrication capacity of 50,000 MT, L&T
MFF Hazira is capable of manufacturing
several large modules simultaneously. It
is also equipped to undertake mechanical
design of modules including structure,
piping, pressure vessels, fabrication and
construction engineering. Fabricated
modules are tested and pre-commissioned
at MFF for trouble-free rapid hook-up. L&T

data for 2000 years return period, had to
be carried out. The lean jackets had to be
designed to withstand deections of up to
2m at the topside in RIE conditions. Other
challenging requirements during the
design stage include Materials & Corrosion
testing of highest standards and complex
safety studies like CFD (Computational
Fluid Dynamics) explosion modelling.
To accelerate deliveries, high end
engineering was carried out using Finite
Element Analysis.
Fast track schedule, obligation of
adhering to approved vendor list,
overhang of international sanctions
on supplies to Myanmar and stringent
material testing requirements posed
major challenges in sourcing materials
in-time for the project. However, thanks
to L&Ts extensive network of suppliers
around the globe and adoption of some
innovative procurement strategies, these
challenges were overcome, ensuring that
the delivery of materials and equipment
did not constrain fabrication progress in
any way. The majority of the structural
steel was ordered from Korea. The key
topside equipment - Test Separators,
Pig Launchers, Utility Gas Scrubber,
Closed Drain Pumps, Corrosion Inhibitor
Injection Pumps, Diesel Transfer Pumps,
TEG Gas Conditioning Skids, Solar
Power Systems, Pedestal Cranes, Utility
Water Storage Tank, Wellhead Control
Panels, Portable Diesel Generators -
were purpose-designed and procured
from vendors around the globe. The
platforms are powered by new Thermo
Electric Generators (TEGs) which had to
be sourced and integrated into the design
from a vendor in Canada.
The concurrent fabrication of three
jackets, longest one being 172 m &
topsides in a record time of 13 months
with stringent governing specs was
a mammoth task to be accomplished.
This complex fabrication was carried
out at L&Ts Modular Fabrication Yard
at Sohar, Sultanate of Oman. 24 single-
piece piles with record length up to 143
m, weighing around 430 MT each, were
fabricated at L&Ts Modular Fabrication
Facility at Hazira, India. Precise planning,
engineering, synchronised teamwork and
coordination across the facilities helped
get all structures and topsides ready
ahead of schedule. The three large jackets
fabricated simultaneously were loaded
out by innovative skidding methods. More

Transportation of WP3 on self propelled barge.
than half a kilometre long skid tracks were
engineered and installed at the yard on
which the three jackets were constructed
making it a rare event as very few yards
in the world would have this unique
accomplishment. Ensuring safety of 3000
workmen during the peak of the project
was a task well accomplished.
Owing to the large size of the structures
and long tows involved in the project,
detailed studies of ocean transportation
were carried out and suitable barges/tugs
were brought in and out from all over
the world. A truly imagineering idea of
using self propelled barge as against the
conventional barge & tug arrangement for
transportation of topsides reduced transit
duration considerably. The transportation
of 24 nos. single-piece skirt piles up to 143
m length was also a challenge. The 400
class at top barges had a 27 m. overhang,
requiring a special cradle arrangement.
The structures were transported over
3000 nautical miles across the Indian
Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal
to the Gulf of Mottama. The proximity of
the transit to pirate infested Gulf of Aden
required deployment of armed guards to
ensure safety of the structures. Needless
to mention such long journeys required
exclusive transportation fatigue analysis
of the structures to be performed.
L&T l everaged i ts i n-house
installation capabilities to undertake the
transportation and installation campaign.
The installation of structures was carried
out by L&Ts own installation cum pipelay
vessel LTS 3000. Being one of the rst
contractors to mobilise in the virgin eld,
L&T faced numerous challenges including
hard soil conditions. The long length of
the piles required dynamic pile upending
method for installation. Managing
safety in a multilingual, multicultural
environment at ofshore, with Indian,
Thai, Indonesian, Singaporean, Malaysian,
Burmese, British and American
nationalities was another challenge of
its own. L&T achieved more than 4 Million
LTI Free Manhours.
L&T has successfully installed all the
structures in Myanmar waters as per
agreed schedule. Zawtika is yet another
feather in the hat of L&T Hydrocarbon and

H
e has the bearings of an academic,
a professor of mathematics
perhaps. You wouldnt really
peg him as the head of a large realty
rm if you met Mr. Shrikant Joshi in a
crowd. That is until you start talking real-
estate with him. A minute or two into
the conversation and you will quickly
realise why Mr. Joshi is currently the
Chief Executive of L&T Realty and how he
is breaking new grounds (quite literally)
and helping the rm carve out a niche for
itself in the increasingly crowded real-
estate market that is India.
In the two-and-a-half years that Mr.
Joshi has been at the helm of afairs, L&T
Realty has grown rapidly with a number of
marquee projects either already launched
or fast reaching that stage.
Born and raised in Bhilai, a small town
in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Joshi could have
taken the easy way out afer earning his
B-Tech from IIT-Delhi and gone abroad
in pursuit of a well-paying job. He didnt.
Mr. Joshi gured hed make something
of himself in India than on foreign soil.
Perhaps it had something to do with his
small town values and his strong sense
of belonging here.
After IIT-Delhi, Mr. Joshi enrolled
himself for a management programme
at IIM-Ahmedabad and two years later, in
1983, landed his rst job as a management
trainee at an FMCG rm. He spent the
next thirteen years of his professional
life in a variety of roles at the company.
As his career blossomed and professional
reputation grew, over the next decade,
Mr. Joshi took on senior roles at a leading
electronics rm, an FMCG company and
an IT Services rm where among other
things he turned around the companys
loss making broadband business into a
protable entity within 24 months.
Having begun his career in FMCG and
spent a number of years in the industry,
Mr. Joshi had never expected to work in
real estate. As a career choice, it seemed
so far of that it didnt even gure on
his radar. However, all that changed in
2006 when a Dubai-based real estate
developer called on Mr. Joshi to spearhead
its joint venture foray in India. Although
he had never worked in realty, the idea
of seeing an empty piece of land being
transformed into beautifully landscaped
corners with tall, gorgeous structures hit
home and soon Mr. Joshi was baptised in
the business. A slew of projects followed
and his strong leadership skills and
business acumen coupled with his old
fashioned grit and rectitude helped the
JV gain a strong foothold in the Indian
realty market.
Mr. Joshi s reputati on grew
exponentially and ve years later, at the

Realty is our proverbial new

end of a particularly hot summer in June
2011, he joined L&T Realty as the Chief
Executive and was entrusted with the
then four year old rms future.
Mr. Joshis brief stint, thus far has
been impressive. But Mr. Joshi, ever
the go-getter, is not resting easy and
is busy setting the agenda for the
Company for the next 2-3 years. This
includes implementing new processes,
streamlining operations, consolidating the
rms presence and breaking into newer
geographies among other things.
Mr. Joshi believes that the next 2-3
years will prove crucial to the Companys
future. The next couple of years will be
about us living up to the expectations
of the customers and stakeholders alike.
People queue up to buy L&T because they
trust the brand and we have to make sure
that we uphold that trust.
He says that as the Company starts
to hand over properties, it will have to
ensure that it delivers the quality and the
nish that people have come to associate
with L&T. Also, as L&T Realty expands the
scope of its operations and moves into
newer geographies, it will have to look
for like-minded partners who believe in
the values which L&T lives by. We cant
jeopardise what we hold so dear merely
to make some prots, he adds.
Mr. Joshis guarded approach perhaps
has to do with the fact that he doesnt
want to make L&T Realty the largest or the
biggest rm out there (at least not yet).
Rather, the strategy is to carve a niche
for the Company in the upper-middle
segment of the market by making big
bets and executing a limited number
of high quality projects over a 4-5 year
horizon. The way he sees it, theres little
competition at that level.
So does it mean that L&T Realty
will only cater to the buyers willing to
pay a premium?
Mr. Joshi says that right now, for L&T
its all about choosing its projects carefully
and identifying the sweet spots for itself.
So whereas in Mumbai the Company
may ofer something in the Rs. 15-20
thousand price-band which is upper-
middle segment of the market, in places
like Chennai the company is ofering
ats in the Rs. 4-5 thousand bracket,
something that can be categorised as
fairly afordable.
The immediate plan for L&T Realty
also includes rationalising its current
portfolio and exiting from the non-core
business of running malls and hotels.
That said, Mr. Joshi appears fairly bullish
on other sub-segments of the commercial
market. He believes that while it may be
in the pits right now, the trend is mostly
cyclical in nature and that in the longer
run the commercial segment gives much
needed sustenance in the form of standard
annuity of prots which can be made of
of rental properties.
For a business leader, there are few
skills more valuable than being able
to unlock value in places which others
might readily overlook. Mr. Joshi thrives
on this trait and attributes it to his ability
to accurately assess the commercial
realities, see the big picture and identify
untapped and emerging opportunities.
His 30 odd years spent as a business
executive in a variety of roles across
industries have also taught him much
about the virtues of patience and the
need to take people along. Mr. Joshis
business mantra is all about keep
doing what is expected of L&T Realty
and staying the course. You cant learn
some of these things in business school
things like extracting the best out of the
people you work with, getting along with
them and taking them along. It takes
years of experience and a lot of grey hair,
he says smilingly. Understanding people
is an important part of doing business,
perhaps even more so in realty where
there are so many people involved at
every stage. To do this you also need
to be able to communicate efectively.
Whether at work or at home, passion
plays an important part in his life. It is
perhaps his most visible attribute. It is
what denes me, confesses Mr. Joshi.
How can I ever hope to inspire others
if I lack the drive within myself? I dont
think that a business leader can be chased
or hounded to work. The re has to come
from within and thats where the passion
plays an important role.
The untethered manner in which he
speaks also plays its part too.
But is there more to him than work
and his job? Does his passion spill over
into his personal life too and does he ever
get to switch of from work and unwind?
Well switching of is not really an option,
but it doesnt mean that I dont indulge
in any hobbies, replies Mr. Joshi.
A cricket fan, Mr. Joshi says that he
never misses a chance to watch a good
game of cricket on TV if he can squeeze
it in his schedule. His current favorite
on TV is a courtroom drama called The
Practice. Outside of his busy work-life
and these small indulgences, Mr. Joshi
gets very little time to do much else but
whenever he does, Mr. Joshi says that he
scribbles poems in Hindi.
But lets save that for another day.

With a view to ensure better coordination
among the members of the team assigned
to Y3DC project and improve stakeholder
interaction and interface management
so as to complete the task successfully
on time and budget, a teambuilding
workshop was organised by the Learning
& Development team of HMD-HR,
Vadodara. The workshop, organised
between October 25-27, 2013, at L&Ts
Leadership Development Academy (LDA)
in Lonavala, witnessed participation
by 53 key stakeholder representatives
across PDO, and HMDs Engineering and
Project Management team with associated
competency centres.
Y3DC or the Yibal third stage depletion
compression project at the Yibal-Natih
gas reservoir in Oman is intended to boost
reservoir pressure. Yibal-Natih is a sweet
gas reservoir with recoverable reserves
estimated at 90 per cent. It has been in
production since 1972 and undergone
a series of expansions to accommodate
increasing demand for gas over the years.
The project which is already underway
involves multiple stakeholder groups.
Stringent timelines and project
requirements demand that these
stakeholder groups work in tandem,
leverage each others strengths, optimise
resources, and help each other overcome
hindrances to achieve the nal objective.
To this end, a prior interaction was carried
out with these stakeholder groups and
based on the inputs received, the contents
of the workshop were nalised.
The workshop formally began with Mr.
Sandeep Dipankar, HMD-HR, welcoming
all the participants and Mr. Abhilash
Verma, Project HSE Manager, sensitising
the participants about the criticality of
safety through a lm.
This was followed by Mr. Ahmed Al-
Barami (Company Representative, PDO),
Mr. S.D. Navare (Project Sponsor, HMD)
and Mr. N. Shankar (Project Manager,
HMD) sharing their thoughts on the key
challenges of the project as well as their
expectations from the team.
The workshop comprised a number
of team building exercises as well and
multiple outdoor activities, covering the
span of LDA. These were very specically
designed for the participants to work in
a fail-safe, experiential environment.
The objective of these activities was to
sensitise the participants to some crucial
aspects of working in a high performance
team. Debrieng sessions included crucial
feedback and valuable learnings for the
entire group. A key component of the
workshop design was a project specic
table discussion, that enabled the client,
engineering and project management
stakeholders to state their own key
deliverables envisioning the successful
completion of the Y3DC project as well
as expectations from other stakeholder
groups to be able to achieve them.
The output of this table discussion
served to create a mission statement for
the project. The medley of classroom
and outdoor activities, coupled with
equally crucial leisure and entertainment
activities made for engaging interactions
between the stakeholder groups.

Consumer VOICE Ranks L&T Insurance as Second Best Health Insurer in India
Consumer VOICE (of Jaago Grahak Jaago fame) recently
carried out a survey covering all the major features that one
should consider before buying health insurance.
The rst was major features of oater policies from 16
general/health insurance companies in India. These included
premium, room rent/ICU charges, maternity benets and
maximum renewable age. It also took into consideration the
consumers experience.
The health insurance category has been usually maligned
due to the experiences customers faced while interacting
with various companies. Thus, the survey gave equal
weightage to both product features and customer service
(based on the experiences of 3,300 consumers). Each
policy was then rated according to the quota assigned to
these parameters.
The results showed the top 5 companies ofering health
insurance in India. Interestingly, L&T Insurance - a fairly new
entrant in the insurance sector - ranked 2nd in this survey.
While the rest of the companies have been operating in the
business nearly a decade, L&T Insurance secured this position
afer being in the industry for just three years. This was indeed
a commendable achievement for the company.
Consumers always opt for a policy that also provides customer-
friendly service along with product features. Therefore,
they have given these factors equal weight-age (50:50) and
computed their ratings.
This ranking will not only help customers choose the best
policy, but it will also guide them regarding the various
features to look out for in a health insurance policy.
Key Findings of this Survey:
