Nursing Management of Disuse Syndrome A pattern of symptoms as a result of long-term disuse, which is characterized by both physical and psychosocial effects of inactivity. Typical symptoms of disuse syndrome include muscle weaknesses, restricted range of motion (ROM) of joints, declined respiratory function, altered blood flow in the peripheral tissue, reduction of bone density and mental function disorder. So, we want to explain about nursing management of high risk for disuse syndrome to reduce symptoms. Disuse syndrome is which a person in experiencing or at risk for deterioration of body systems or altered functioning as the result of prescribed or unavoidable musculoskeletal inactivity. Related factors of Disuse Syndrome are Pathophysiologic, Treatment-Related, Situational (Personal, Environmental), and Maturational. Symptoms are muscle weaknesses, restricted range of motion (ROM) of joints, declined respiratory function such as Pneumonia, Decubitus Ulcer, etc. According of symptoms that appear, we as nurses can make planning for the nursing management of disuse syndrome. We can do a nursing interventions with positioning and Exercise Therapy. Positioning, the first give high fowlers position to alleviate dyspnea, and then elevate feet on foot stool when sitting to provide support for edematous area, and encourage active range of motion exercise. And Exercise Therapy with collaborate with physical, occupational, and recreational therapists, In developing and executing an individually tailored exercise program, after that offer options, explain rationale for type of exercise and protocol to client, and allow patient to make choices that appeal to him and that address patient needs, provide step-by-step cuing for each motor activity during exercise or ADLs, and use visual aids to facilitate learning how to perform exercise. According to the report so we can take the conclusion that in disuse syndrome, we can make planning according symptoms. Such as on patient with muscle weakness we can give them exercise therapy and positioning to reduce symptoms.
