Instructions:
Print your name and student ID number, select your section number and TAs name,
and write your signature to indicate that you accept the Honor Code.
There are 5 problems on the pages numbered from 1 to 5, for a total of 95 points.
Point values are given in parentheses. Please check that the version of the exam you
have is complete, and correctly stapled.
Read each question carefully. In order to receive full credit, please show all of your
work and justify your answers.
You do not need to simplify your answers unless specically instructed to do so. You
may use any result from class that you like, but if you cite a theorem be sure to verify
the hypotheses are satised.
You have 50 minutes to complete the exam. This is a closed-book, closednotes exam. No calculators or other electronic aids will be permitted. If you
nish early, you must hand your exam paper to a member of teaching sta.
If you need extra room, use the back sides of each page. If you must use extra
paper, make sure to write your name on it and attach it to this exam. Do not
unstaple or detach pages from this exam.
It is your responsibility to arrange to pick up your graded exam paper from your
section leader in a timely manner. You have only until Thursday, October
21st, to resubmit your exam for any regrade considerations; consult your section
leader about the exact details of the submission process.

Problem 1. (15 pts.) Let R be a region of R2 symmetrical about the y-axis, and R+ be
the half of the region R contained in the half plane x 0. Mark as TRUE/FALSE the

Comment: Moment of inertia is zero only if the whole region is contained in the axis of rotation.

Problem 2. (20 pts.)

Consider the following change of coordinates:

{
u=x+y
v =xy

a) Compute the Jacobian

(u, v)

(x, y)

(u, v)

z = 1 (x2 + y 2 ), x + y = 1, x y = 1, x + y = 1 and x y = 1.

Hint: compute u2 + v 2 .
Since u2 + v 2 = 2 (x2 + y 2 ), the new limits for z are

Problem 3. (20 pts.) Let W be the cone whose base is the circle with radius a and the

height is h. It is knows that the volume if that cone is V = a2 h.

a) Put this cone upside down in cylindrical coordinates with the vertex in the center of
coordinates system. Setup the integral in cylindrical coordinates expressing the volume
of W .
DO NOT EVALUATE that integral (its value is given above). You can use the picture:

y =1x

The region of integration is marked on the picture. Treating that region

as y simple we get:

Problem 5. (20 pts.) Let R be a at region in xy plane with density 1 and the total
mass m. Let Ia denote the moment of inertia of R about the line x = a (and z = 0).
Show that
Ia = I0 + a2 m 2m ax
where (x, y) are the coordinates of the centroid of R.
Hint: write the denition of Ia and regroup the function under the integral to nd all
elements of the right hand side.
