Abortion

Various controversial topics have been raised again and again in society that affect the
lives of millions of people, and abortion is of them. Whether or not abortions should be legal, has
been a topic of debate for many years and yet as a society we have not been able to decide what
is the right decision. Pro life believers do not support abortion and consider it to be immoral.
They fail to see the views of someone who is pro choice and do not seem to understand why
legalizing abortion is the right thing to do for the mother, and the child. A woman should be
allowed to decided whether she is willing to give birth to a child or not. A woman may not be
ready to have a child, and should have the option of deciding when she wants to become a
mother. Plus, illegalization of abortion can lead to women conducting unsafe methods of
abortion themselves, that can be life threatening. Therefore, for the benefit of the parents and the
child itself, abortion should be legal.

One of the main reasons why many believe abortion should be legal is because it the right
of every female. Making abortion illegal would be taking away freedom from a women. The
government should have no say in what someone can or cannot do with their body. (Marie,
2013:Pg 1) Many pro life believers argue that the unborn baby has rights that cannot be
infringed. (Marie, 2013:Pg 1) However, the fact that they are willing to take away the rights
from a women, and give them to an unborn child, contradicts what they are trying to stand for.
(Benjamin, 2013:Pg 1) The government has no right to regulate the medical procedure of
abortion. (Benjamin, 2013:Pg 1) A woman should have more right to her unborn child than the
government. (Benjamin, 2013:Pg 1) Moreover, a woman could be choosing to have an abortion
for many different reason. One could be that the father of the baby is unwilling to take part in the
baby's life. It is unfair to force a women to keep a baby while the father can easily walk away
from everything. In addition, many people believe that the woman is always to blame for an
unwanted pregnancy. A woman could have an unwanted pregnancy in a case of a sexual assault.
(Marie, 2013:Pg 1) Carrying the child of her rapist may be too traumatic for the women, as it
will be a constant reminder of what she had been through. (Marie, 2013:Pg 1) Hence, a woman
should have complete right to make to make a choice that is best for her and her child.
Furthermore, a woman who may not be ready to have a child at a certain point in her life,
should have the right to decided if she wants to be a mother. With growing prices families have a
difficult time managing their budget as it is, without the addition of the necessities of a child.
Giving birth to an infant without having the money to be able to provide for them, can cause
disadvantages for the child. (Marie, 2013:Pg 1) For such a situation parents should be given the
chance to become ready before making one of the most important decisions of their lives. Age, is
another thing that could make a woman unprepared to raise a child. Being forced to have a child
at a very young age can be harmful for both the mother and the child. For the mother, it could
mean the loss opportunities, where she may be unable to live her life as she planned. (Marie,
2013:Pg 1) For the child, having an extremely young mother may prove to be a disadvantage.
(Marie, 2013:Pg 1) The mother may be unfit to raise a child, and may even grow to resent the
child due to unwanted responsibility. (Marie, 2013:Pg 1) Some argue that if a mother is unable
to raise her child, she could put him or her up for adoption. However UNICEF has estimated that
there are 210 million orphans worldwide, in search of homes. (Benjamin, 2013:Pg 1) There is no
guarantee that the child will find a suitable home if put up for adoption. Therefore, a woman
should not be forced to give birth to another human being if she is not willing to.
Many people do not realize that regardless of whether or not abortions are legal. they will
still be performed, often with unsafe methods. Legalizing abortion will not make women
irresponsible with unprotected sex, yet illegalizing abortion can cause women who do not want
the baby to try and abort it themselves. This could be extremely harmful for the mother, and may
possibly lead to death. According to the World Health Organization 21.6 million women
experience an unsafe abortion worldwide each year and 18.5 million of these occur in
developing countries, where abortion is often illegal. (Who, 2014:Pg 1) 47 000 women die from
complications of unsafe abortion each year. (Who, 2014:Pg 1) Women who survive unsafe
abortions, will suffer long-term health complications. The primary method for preventing unsafe
abortion is less restrictive abortion laws. (Who, 2014:Pg 1) It is unethical to jeopardize the life of
one human being in order to save another's.
Considering all aspects, abortion should be legal, not only for the benefit of the mother
who can make her own decisions, but also for the child who will not have to endure the pain of
being an unwanted child, or suffer through irresponsible parenting. Since children cannot choose
their parents, it is the parent's responsibility to be the best guardians they can be. If they feel that
they cannot be what they need to be for the child, then they should have the option of not
becoming parents." It is worth noting that pro-choice are not the same as pro-abortion. People
that believe in pro-choice are not necessarily saying that they believe in abortion, but that they
respect the mothers decision on whether or not to have an abortion." (Benjamin, 2013:Pg 1)
The ability to make a decision as to whether or not a woman should have a child should depend
solely on the mother herself.
