Buckeye Boys State
delegates had the privilege of
welcoming Jonathan Waters,
current director of The Ohio State
Universitys Marching Band (AKA
The Best Band In The Land). In
addition to his powerful speech on
Wednesday nights assembly and
induction into the Buckeye Boys
State Hall of Fame, he directed the
BBS Band during their performance.

Mr. Waters arrived during band
rehearsal in the evening before
assembly, and practiced How
Firm Thy Friendship by James
Swearingen, with the delegates.
He offered his expertise, and led
the band in their performance of
the piece. He took the position of
director once again as the assembly
was being dismissed, performing
(quite appropriately) Hang on
Sloopy by Wes Farrell and Bert
Russell, a traditional OSU fght song.
Mr. Waters was a Buckeye
Boys State delegate in 1993,
and assures delegates that their
experience will have a profound
impact in their future endeavors.
As a delegate, Mr. Waters earned a
reputation for musical excellence and
creativity while accommodating for
the lack of high woodwinds in the
BBS Band; on a sousaphone. This
large, brassy instrument is designed
for low bass parts, and playing a part
intended for the highest instruments
of the band is no easy task. But
despite the challenges, Mr. Waters
succeeded in converting the Stars
and Stripes Forever part for high
woodwind to one he could play, and
performed with the sousaphone with
remarkable talent.
After Buckeye Boys State,
Mr. Waters attended The Ohio State
University, and became a member
of the marching band from 19995-
1999. He became Director at OSU on
October 10
th
, 2012, and is recognized
not only for his musical talent and
high standard he holds his band to,
but also for his innovations and use
of technology while teaching drills
and formations on the feld.
Rest on tradition . . . then
innovate, he told delegates during
his address, Todays innovations
become tomorrows traditions. Mr.
Waters is proud to be a part of OSUs
tradition of excellence, but also
frmly believes in forging ones own
style; thus, fnding new ways to carry
these traditions.

Lastly, Mr. Waters offered
Buckeye Boys State delegates
some words of advice on leadership
and making their own unique
contributions in the form of a musical
metaphor.
Know who has the
melody, and who has the harmony . .
. he refected, Know when its time
to lead. He urges young people to
hold fast to the traditions that make
them excellent, while encouraging
individuality, and fnding the courage
to create your own song.

Portrait of a Legionnaire:
Richard Beecker
Michael Roberts of Hartpence
Richard Beecker served in the
Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954. He spent
sixteen months in North Korea, and also
served in Cuba and Puerto Rico. His most
memorable experience, however, was his
Embassy Duty in Moscow, Russia. He was
fascinated by the lifestyle in the Soviet
Union, experiencing frst hand the political
and social contrasts that defned the latter
part of the twentieth century.
It was a dictatorship, Mr.
Beecker explained, The Russian people
were being pushed down.
In addition to his military
service, Mr. Beecker is a proud alumni of
Buckeye Boys State in which he attended
in 1949. He greatly values the experience,
and the positive impact it had on his life.
He returned to BBS after his military
service, and now helps to run the Mini
Mall in Offenhauer Tower.
Local Vendors Flock to Boys
State
Brandon Wilson of Gabel
For the past several evenings,
local businesses have set up shop
outside the dorms of Buckeye Boys
State, to quench their teenage appetites.
Every evening delegates swarm around
the tables of food and are eager to pay
whatever they have to for a taste of the
outside world, but are surprised by the
reasonable prices offered. The scenario
is most certainly a win-win, with local
businesses pulling in a healthy proft
with low prices while the delegates
getting a rather large supplement to
their dinner.
In a short interview with an employee
of Marcos Pizza, the Hetuck got some
insight into their thoughts on how the
BBS program is benefcial to their
program. They spoke positively of
the program and confrmed that Boy
State is an excellent source of income
for their business and that they keep
very busy. They also commented on
how selling here has become an annual
tradition after operating at Boys State
for the past several years. Beyond
that, there wasnt much time for
questions because of how busy theyve
are as a swarm of hungry delegates
overwhelming them.

Pizza Boxes, Pop Cans, and
Water Bottles! Oh My!
By James Barrows

The engineers of Buckeye
Boys State have a very intriguing job
ahead of themselves. Their mission
is to turn ordinary trash on campus
empty boxes of pizza, pop cans,
and water bottles into something
worthwhile to beneft the county and
city.
I had the privilege to
interview a couple of students on their
acquired jobs at Buckeye Boys State
in the engineering feld. I asked them
a variety of questions pertaining to
their plans for the state, and their own
personal struggles and successes. The
answers I received are quite intriguing.
I started off by interviewing
a city engineer. I began the interview
by asking him what his plans for the
city were. He wanted to make the city
unique and special, something to set his
city apart from all the others. He hopes
create a well-functioning city with
amenities to satisfy everyones needs.
Amongst these ideas, he plans to build
a car wash, for delegates as they walk
out of their building. He also hopes
to build lanes, and a senior center for
the senior legionnaire. His problems
fall into the category of money. He
needs more money to fnance his more
ambitious ideas. Working with such
little fnance, he is limited to what
he can fnd. Despite his troubles, he
enjoys his job very much. He loves to
build things, and he also enjoys the no
limitations that come with his position.
For all other delegates, and future
delegates wishing to pursue a career
in the engineering feld, he wishes that
they know that the sky is truly the limit,
and to be creative. With creativity,
anything is possible.
From the city, I moved over
to the county engineering, who allowed
me to step in for a quick interview. I
asked him the same questions I asked
the city. The duties for the county are

The Down Time Debate
By Ryan Shockling of Abele

Given that most delegates
come from different areas and schools
throughout Ohio, nearly all have
had different experiences involving
their preparation for Buckeye Boys
State. However, the school year and
its ending time can potentially play a
major role in a delegates capability to
prepare themselves for the program or
accommodate to the schedule.
Most schools in the Ohio
area had ended their school year before
the program began, giving the delegates
anywhere from several days to several
weeks of free time before the start of
Buckeye Boys State. Those in favor of
a long break between school and BBS
have advocated for extra time available
to those who do not have as much time.
The time not spent at school can be
used to pack ones belongings, to study
for one of the various tests offered
here at Boys State, to review the Blue
and Gold books, or to come up with
campaign ideas and strategy.
On the opposite hand of the
spectrum, some schools were still in
session the week prior to the start of
Buckeye Boys State, most often due to
make-up days caused by abnormally
high amount of snow days this year.
Those in favor of the later school
schedule have supported it for several
reasons. They have stated mental
activity as the number one reason they
wish the start of BBS and the end of
the school year had been closer to each
other. Several delegates have suggested
that they have not had to complete any
high level tasks, such as that required
at Boys State, in quite some time.
Thus, these delegates feel this inactive
schedule has been a disadvantage.
The second argument is the sleeping
habits some acclimate to as the school
year ends. Many delegates struggle to
wake up on time or feel very tired upon
waking up if they have been out of
school for a signifcant amount of time.
Those who ended school last week
adapted quickly to waking up at the
correct time, if not earlier, for their day
at Boys State.
In both cases, advantages
and disadvantages are present.
Unfortunately, delegates, as is
common amongst all people, see the
disadvantages of their own side and the
advantages of the opposite situation.
The saying that the grass is always
greener on the other side appears to be
true in this scenario as it is in most.
unlike the cities plans. This engineer
has to build county roads, stop signs,
do commission, and he also has to keep
the most important aspect in mind:
Making sure that the county is safe. He
wishes to make his county safe, and
build stellar roads. He fnds diffculty
in the number of distractions that he
faces while working his job. Lots of
people come in with questions, stealing
time from his plans. He has a lot to
accomplish with only a small amount
of time. He fnds solace in designing
his own county, which he fnds almost
as fun as going to Cedar Point. He also
advises that everyone stays organized,
as his job creates a lot of work. Its
no easy job, but the end result is very
satisfying.
Everyone can rest easy
knowing that the city and county are
safe to traverse.

Friendly Rivalry

Yesterday afternoon,
once work hours ended, many of
the Buckeye Boys State delegates
participated in various recreational
activities. The delegates competed in
games such volleyball and ultimate
Frisbee. The teams were divided by
city, and two different cities would
square off in what would become some
friendly competition. The games started
at 3:20, shortly after our business hours
ended. Each citys Director of Parks
and Recreation is in charge of putting
the teams together and signing them up
for games. These games are scheduled
to continue after work hours during
recreation time in which all citizens are
welcome to play in this relaxed, laid
back environment. We urge all of the
delegates to come out and participate
in these activities, because at Buckeye
Boys State, we work hard, and play
hard. We have a busy and often

stressful week, so it is important to take
time to unwind and enjoy some free
time. If you are interested in joining
your citys team or want information
regarding the time of your competition,
consult your citys director of Parks and
Recreation. Volleyball teams consist of
6 people and generally 7 for ultimate
Frisbee but all cities are welcome to
have substitutions. We ask that you stay
courteous and sportsmanlike, but have
fun in the process. Have fun and may
the best city win.
them in legal situations. The OSBA
provides malpractice insurance in case a
lawyer makes a mistake and gets sued.
They also provide Continuation of Legal
Education (CLE) classes for lawyers and
attorneys. It is a requirement that every
lawyer in Ohio completes at least 12
hours minimum of legal education every
year and judges complete 20. The OSBA
also provides pro-bono options, free
representation, for unrepresented clients
that list lawyers by their specialties. Once
the client selects the lawyer he would like
to represent him, the lawyer represents
him free of charge.
In my last question to Martin
Mohler and Gary Bishop I asked why
they both enjoy assisting Boys State.
They replied, We all think it is the
most rewarding experience we get to
do. To show the OSBAs support for
Buckeye Boys State, the two lawyers let
the delegates use an online database for
state and federal cases called the Case
Maker Program for free. This shows how
much organizations approve and support
Buckeye Boy States goal to properly
groom Ohios shinning young men.

Ohio State Bar Association
By Adam Kubicki of Madaffer
While I was out interviewing
for an interesting story, I was suddenly
stopped by Legionnaire Dan Favereau
who then asked me if I was with the
Hetuck to which I quickly replied yes,
Im a reporter. He then took me to meet
with the next president of the OSBA
(Ohio State Bar Association). Unwilling
to go against the orders of a former
combat engineer and Infantry Rife
Commander, I followed him.
When I walked into the lower
level of the McDonald Hall, I was greeted
by Martin Mohler, the next president of
the OSBA. He is a practicing lawyer of
41 years and has tried many cases with
Gary Bishop, Richland Country assistant
prosecutor, in a lawyer frm in Toledo for
16 years. I asked him what his job entails
as president of the OSBA. He explained to
me how the OSBA stands up and speaks
out for lawyers and attorneys in Ohio
and provides services to help protect
Brazil Hosts 2014 FIFA World
Cup
By: Nathan Shively of Estepp
Soccer fanatics rejoice. The
FIFA World Cup is back. Die-hard fans
throughout the world are ready for their
country to rise up from last World Cups
disappointment (well, maybe besides
Spain). Brazil, the host country, enters
the tournament as the slight favorite
over Spain. Young sensations Neymar
and Dani Alves hope to lead Brazil to its
frst World Cup title in 12 years. Other
contenders that can stop Brazils run for
a title are Spain, as I said earlier, and
Germany who almost every year fnds a
way to at least the semifnals.
Perhaps one of the biggest
stories entering the World Cup is Jurgen
Klinsmann, the head coach of the United
States team, leaving Landon Donovan
off the 23-man roster. Donovan ignited
passion for American soccer as he led
the United States to four World Cup
appearances an eighth place fnish in
2002. Those who research professional
soccer say that Donovan not being on the
team means that the team must be stellar
if the star of the 2010 World Cup team
does not make the cut.
Soccer fans and sports fans
for that matter will defnitely enjoy the
spectacle that is the FIFA World Cup. Sit
back, relax, and enjoy it because it wont
be on again for another four years.
