Certification of Financial Support


U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations require universities to certify that international students have sufficient
funding to pursue a course of study. The University of South Carolina therefore requires international applicants to present
documentation of adequate liquid financial resources to cover all expenses at the University for their first academic year of study.
This form has been developed for use by the University of South Carolina only. Check with your U.S. embassy or consulate to
determine what documentation you need for your interview.

Acceptable forms of certification
- Checking or savings accounts
- Certificates of deposit (CDs) with a maturity date
prior to the start of the students term of admission
- Money market accounts
- A scholarship through the University, the students
home government, or a non-governmental agency
- Offer letter for a graduate assistantship/fellowship
- Educational loans
Unacceptable forms of certification
- Stocks
- Bonds
- Mutual funds
- Statements of earned salary or yearly income
- Tax returns
- Credit card statements/lines of credit
- Statements of property ownership

completed as long as copies of relevant bank statements are attached.

II. Bank Certification. To be completed by a bank official. If your bank cannot complete this form, please have a
representative issue a letter with the below information included.

the deposit balance to the credit of the above-named individual as shown in our records is currently the following amount (specify
currency) ________________. This account was opened on (month/day/year) ________________. To the best of our knowledge of
the banking laws of this country, these funds may be sent out of the country to support the educational needs of the above-named
