o Thresh: to separate the grain from the stalk
o Origin-the beginning of something, the first stage or part
-Post-it notes for map
o Sri Lanka
o Philippines

have the manual process, some will have the mechanical process)
- Glue sticks (1 for each table team)-already in table toolkits

Plan
Step Slide Description Time
1. #1 Introduction
- Connect to previous lesson, and preview todays lesson. Yesterday, we
learned about the origins of rice. Today, were going to learn about how
its grown and harvested.
- Review expectations. Yesterday, I think we did much better behaviorally,
but you still havent met my expectations. Again, today, I want to focus on
raising a silent hand if you have a question or a comment, limit side
discussions and have your eyes on me or the smartboard. Students need to
have calm bodies, showing me theyre attentive. Mrs. Johnson Ms. Settles
and I will both be on the lookout for the students who are meeting our
expectations.
- Acknowledge that we will be learning some more new words. Explain
Review vocab poster and yesterdays vocab; that its going to help us when
we make rice comics with a project well be doing later in the unit.
Explain that we will also be marking additional places on our map. Add
5 min
origin to poster.
- Today, were learning how you cultivate rice; cultivate means to prepare
and use land for growing plants. Have a student tape the definition to
vocab poster.

Direct Instruction
1. THE LAND IS PREPARED.
- Land where rice is grown is called a paddy. Have student add definition to
poster.
- The first step is getting the paddy ready for the rice. Explain that there are
different kinds of land where rice can grow (terraced, flat)
- Terraced means a series of levels, one on top of the other. Have a student
tape that definition onto poster. This picture was taken in China, where the
Huas were from in Everybody Cooks Rice.
- Rice fields can also be flat. The most important part of the land is the
water. The paddies are flooded. Rice grows well in water. Other plants
dont, so it helps keep weeds away. This is a picture from Italy, where
Carries great grandmother is from.
- After its flooded, the paddy is tilled (to plow lands for crops). Have
student add definition to poster. This makes the dirt loose so that the roots
from the rice plant can grow well. Can be done by hand or by machine.
2. THE RICE IS PLANTED:
- Planted: typically planted in early spring.
- This also can be done manually or by machine.
- Here is a video of rice being planted in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is near India.
Call on someone to put it on the map.
- Explain that rice is grown in many different ways in many different parts
of the world. Review from yesterday of rice being grown in every
continent except Antarctica.
- Here is a video of rice being planted from a plane.
- Have students turn and talk: What are the benefits of each of these ways
of planting?
- Take a couple of comments to share out.
3. THE RICE GROWS: it takes 3-6 months for rice plants to reach maturity.
Need to make sure there is enough water.
- Heres a video of rice growing over 3 months, sped up so you can see it in
one minute. This video was taken in the Phillipines. The Phillipines are
islands in the Pacific Ocean , near Vietnam, which weve already labeled.
Choose a student to label the Phillipines.
- Farmer has to make sure the fields stay filled with water. They may use
pesticides to keep bugs away. Needs warm weather.
4. THE RICE IS HARVESTED
- Paddies are drained.
- Plants cut, can be done manually. Then, they thresh the plant (to separate
grain from the stalk). Have student add to vocab poster.
- Video of manual harvesting. (Wont say it unless they ask, but the video is
from China.)
- Or mechanically.
- Video of mechanical harvesting. This video was shot in California, thats
on the west coast of the United States, which weve already labelled.
20 min
3. #10 Guided Practice
- Introduce Rice Cultivation Handout
- Model first one (Which step in the process comes first?)
- Ask if students have questions. (If too many students raise hands, limit
number of questions I will accept.)
- Remind students of expectations. Its ok to talk at their teams, but I
shouldnt hear a lot of noise. (Use marble jar as incentive.)
- Tell students if they have continued questions as they work, to quietly raise
their hand and I will come to them.
- Have students work in their table teams, have distributors give out the
pictures/labels and handouts.
5 min
4. #10 Independent Practice
- Students will work at table teams to glue the correct labels and pictures in
order on the Rice Cultivation Handout.
- Float among tables to answer questions and give guidance.
- If students finish early, have them add any additional facts in the margin.
- Note that this is good practice for the rice comic we will do later.
10 min
5. #11 Closure
- Give students 5 minute, 2 minute, and 30 second warning.
- If you can hear my voice, clap once to get attention.
- Ask for a team who wants to share their sheet.
- Have class agree/disagree with thumbs up or thumbs down as we go over
order.
- Ask for a team with the other type of worksheet to share.
- Ask what the difference is between the two worksheets.
- Have collectors gather papers. Have students put worksheets in their team
folders.
- Say that next week, well learn how it goes from being harvested to ending
up on your plate!
5 min

Anticipating students responses and your possible responses
- Expectations will be reviewed before lesson starts (calm bodies, thinking faces, show me youre
attentive, etc.)
- If students get too chatty or call out, stop and review expectations or give stars to students who are
meeting expectations.

Assessment of the objectives
- The Rice Cultivation Handout and surrounding discussion will be used to assess students
comprehension of the steps of rice cultivation.
Cut out each picture and label. Print enough copies for half of the table teams.
