Her own life story and her persistent struggle, and the fact that she refused to give up, and overcame all obstacles are what make her so accomplished. Overcoming her disability was her greatest accomplishment. The fact that she inspired others makes her personal accomplishment even more powerful. Helen Keller was an advocate of many causes. She supported the American Foundation for the Blind. Was a socialist and supported equal suffrage. Favored the feminist pro choice views, and supported birth control use. Was a member of the Womens Peace Party. She also supported the NAACP and helped found the American Civil Liberties Union. She fought for both the rights of the disables, and civil rights in general (this includes both rights base on race and feminism).http://feminism-gender.blogspot.com/2008/02/helen-keller-by-carla- bertoldi.html I first became interested in the acti9ist work of 'elen :eller a few years a%o when I read ;ames +oewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong <1""8=. +oewen concludes that the way that 'elen :eller's life story is turned into a >bland ma4im> is lyin% by omission. $hen I turned to the many 0icture books written about her, I was discoura%ed to disco9er that books for youn% children retain that bland fla9or, ne%atin% the 0ower of her life work and the lessons she herself would ho0e 0eo0le would take from it.
