Community raises $100,000 to build new shed

COIMADAI Fire Brigade officially opened its new, 100 per

cent community-funded fire station last Saturday.
Captain Brad Dawson said the brigade had saved and
saved for the last 15 years to raise enough money to build
the new four-bay shed.
Its 100 per cent funded by our brigade members, people
from the community and some corporate sponsors, Mr
Dawson said.

It cost just under $100,000, which is a lot of money to raise

for a small rural fire brigade.
The new steel shed measures 20 metres by 12 metres, has
four bays, electronic doors and remote controls to secure
the shed.
The Coimadai Fire Brigade was established in 1935 and
our existing building was built in 1979, Mr Dawson said.

Weve now got enough room for our three trucks all
under the same roof and the fourth bay is used for storage.
The new building has better security and ease of access for
our members.
He said Coimadai Fire Brigade currently has 53 members.
Some of our older members are pretty emotional to finally
see the new building go up.

STAGE 2 of the Ballan District Health and

Care clinic facility is expected to be completed
by the second week of July.
Last week Ballan Hospital CEO Wayne Weaire
took Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine
King, on a tour to view the progress made
towards stage 2 of the GP Super Clinic - the
primary care centre.
It includes a new gymnasium, hydrotherapy
pool and spa, Mr Weaire said.
There will also be a meeting and exercise
room, 10 specialist consulting rooms, a
pathology collection area and physiotherapy
treatment areas.
Mr Weaire said the hospital would use the
new equipment for rehabilitation services and
individuals and community groups would also
be able to purchase gym memberships to use
the facilities.
It will continue to add on to the enormous
facilities already available to the community,
he said.
On August 29 Ballan District Health and Care
will hold a fundraiser at St Annes Winery to
raise money for Ballans first chemotherapy
and infusion treatment chairs.
Mr Weaire said the hospital aimed to raise
enough money for three chairs, including
infusion pumps and equipment, worth $10,000
each.
Once the chairs are established we will look
at employing specialist oncology nurses. The
service will be part of a regional approach to
cancer services, he said.
The chairs will be used for more than
oncology; theyll be used for other treatments
such as iron infusions.
Its about taking stepping stones to ensuring
access to health services for all of the
community.
For more information about the four course
dinner fundraiser, phone 5368 1100.

One individual has been
identified with 379 outstanding warrants, worth
more than $109,000 in an
operation last Wednesday
in Moorabool.
Sheriffs Officers caught
26 people with outstanding
warrants during a highly
visible roadblock operation
on the Western Freeway,
near Pykes Creek Reservoir, and used automatic
numberplate recognition
technology to identify
offenders.
Uniformed officers from
the Grampians region
teamed up with members
of Victoria Police for the targeted blitz, focusing on enforcing outstanding debts
using tough sanctions and
penalties.
Of the 26 individuals identified during the operation
there were 784 outstanding
infringement warrants between them, valued at more
than $243,000.
Another person was identified with 26 warrants totalling more than $7,806 and
had his motorcycle seized.

Loan scheme educates on energy savings

By Jessica Howard
The Neighbours Place
has been providing aid to
disadvantaged Moorabool
Shire residents for 20 years
now, and theyre not about
to stop there.
With a No Interest Loan
Scheme (NILs), the organisation is allowing people on
low incomes to purchase
subsidised energy efficient
products to help reduce
ongoing household energy
expenses.
Since 2008, over 45 loans
have been passed, with 18
in 2013 alone.
Diane Van Leuvan, who
manages the NILs program,
says that although there
has been a huge increase,

the volunteers are hoping it

will only continue to grow.
The number of people
who come in to The Neighbours Place for food could
also benefit, not to mention
anyone out there that is at a
disadvantage, she said.
We are trying to educate
people to buy energy efficient or white goods with
star ratings, rather than a
second hand item which
uses a lot more energy. The
main thing is just getting
the word out there.
The NILs program is part
of the Home Energy Saver
Scheme (HESS), and allows
for concession holders to
save as much as $100 a year
through lower energy bills.

NILs enables access to up

to $1,200 per loan, allowing borrowers to buy one or
more quality, energy saving
item.
HESS is a welcome addition to NILs. It will help
our clients purchase good
quality, energy efficient
items. This will result in
significant energy savings
for people in our community, Ms Van Leuvan said.
HESS subsidies are for
products that meet a minimum energy star rating,
such as fridges, washing
machines, gas or solar hot
water systems.
The cost saving has the
potential to make a real difference for families struggling with the high costs

of energy, and the ability

to afford a new appliance,
she said.
We like people to get their
own quotes for goods and
they must check the Energy
Star rating. We can also access comparative quotes for
clients to consider.
Brochures explaining NILs
are available at many public places in the shire such
as the library, hospital,
Op shops, Senior citizens,
Mens Shed, Shire Offices,
CAFS and churches.
To find out more about
how to save energy in the
home, ring the free nationwide number, 1800 007 001

Speeding leads the way in blitz

POLICE issued fines for 125
traffic offences across the
Moorabool Police Service
Area (PSA) over the Queens
Birthday long weekend.
A spokesperson for Police
Victoria said the Operation
Regal blitz netted 63 speeders, 10 unregistered motor
vehicles, 10 defective vehicles and two drink drivers
among the list of offenders
across Moorabool.
Other traffic infringements
included three drivers not

wearing a seatbelt, four

talking on mobile phones
while operating a vehicle,
four disobeying traffic signals, five unlicenced drivers, one disqualified driver
and 22 other offences.
The statewide blitz began
on Friday and ended Monday. During Operation Regal, police conducted 2772
preliminary breath tests
across Moorabool PSA.
Road Policing Command
Superintendent
Neville

Taylor said he was pleased

with the overall results, but
remained concerned by
the high number of drivers
across Victoria detected
driving under the influence
of drugs.
Of the 542 road side drug
tests conducted by police,
51 returned positive results, Superintendent Taylor said.
Thats one in every 11
drivers tested which is just
not acceptable.

Weve seen the catastrophic impact the combination of alcohol and drugs
and driving has on the
roads and it needs to stop.
While we are pleased
the overall offences have
dropped, there are some
people in the community
who choose to engage in
risky and dangerous behaviour, whether speeding
or using the mobile phone,
and we know this too has
deadly consequences.

Kids program in limbo

MORE than 200 children
have been left devastated
following the closure of a
gymnastics program called
Acrofun in Bacchus Marsh.
Last week parents were
informed that the program,
solely run by Belgravia Leisure for the past two and-ahalf years out of the Darley
Civic and Community Hub,
would not continue from
July.
Belgravia Leisure chief
operating officer Damian
Gorman said it was a commercial business decision
to close the program.
Over the last three years
it hasnt broken even and
were not in a position to
keep subsidising it. We
tried 12 months ago to get it
to break even and invested
$12,000 in it, but the business model didnt work.
Weve now got a $70,000
loss, Mr Gorman said.
We needed to grow numbers to 400 kids. Its no-ones
fault this has happened.
Twelve months ago we
thought this would work.
We clearly got it wrong and
Im sorry.
He said Belgravia Leisure
would refund any unused
membership fees.
At a public meeting last
Wednesday, parents and
their children met with the
management of Belgravia Leisure to voice their
concerns.
Concerned parent Bree
Mort said Belgravia Leisure should have let parents know sooner that the
program was under review

so they could have fundraised or something.

This news will impact the
state squad kids the greatest as they are about to embark on their competition
schedule which they have
been training up to10 hours
a week for. The squad levels
1, 2 and 3 are due to compete this Sunday (June 15)
so the news was just devastating to their preparation,
she said.
Parents have just four
weeks ago paid out $300
each for uniforms for these
kids to compete and I am
sure Belgravia Leisure were
fully aware that they were

reviewing keeping this program open at that time, but

instead of being open and
honest they failed to communicate this and allowed
all the children to order
and pay for uniforms and
continue to train as hard as
they have been.
She said parents were
fighting to keep the program open for their children because The alternative is these kids go back to
sitting behind computer
screens and TV.
This is a major blow for
the kids of this community.
We do not have a great deal

on offer for kids to do as it

is within the community.
To remove this service and
(give) only four weeks notice is disrespectful and
badly handled, she said.
At the close of the meeting
Mr Gorman said Belgravia
Leisure would commit to
running the program for a
further three month term
in the hope that parents
could find an alternative solution and possibly set up a
committee of management
to run the program themselves. This will allow the
transition to occur to a club
model. I think it would be
viable to run the program
under a club structure with
volunteers.
Moorabool Shire Community Services general
manager Danny Colgan
said council would offer
assistance and advice to
members on how to establish the club.
Council has contacted
Gymnastics Victoria which
has offered to support the
members in establishing
the club, including putting
in place appropriate governance and management
structures, Mr Colgan
said.
This outcome provides
members with time to establish a club and to transition from a Belgravia based
program to a formal community sporting group.
Anyone wishing to support the establishment of
the Acrofun club can call
Moorabool Shire Council
on 5366 7100.

The Neighbours Place

(TNP) has been a place of
salvation for Moorabool
Shire residents since it was
established in June 1994,
however without the help of
the community it could not
have achieved what it has
today.
During 2013, TNP provided emergency food to
the value of $90,000, with
90 food hampers distributed over Christmas and
102 adults, 49 children and
three homeless people visiting the shelter throughout
the year.
With 20-25 current volunteers, the organisation
is looking for more people
in the community to get
actively involved by providing aid to those who need it
most.
June, a long-term volunteer of 11 years said she
started at TNP when it was
just a little hospitality stand
outside the Church.
I enjoy knowing that I am
helping someone out, especially when anyone could
be in the same boat, she
said.
There are a lot of very sad
people out there, however
it isnt their fault so it is my
way of giving back to the

community.
June volunteers in the TNP
interviewing process, and
the organisation of food,
distribution and aid.
A lot of people really benefit from this. When people
come in and say;
This is the last time,
things are looking up
and Ive found a job, you
feel like they have really
achieved something and for
them to come in and actually say something like that
- it makes you feel pretty
good, she said.
I volunteer because I
am interested in helping
people, and if people out
there feel the same way
they should consider volunteering too, it is very
rewarding.
With people coming from
Ballan, Gordon and all over
the Bacchus Marsh area
more and more volunteers
are needed.
19 people came in one
morning, thats more than
$200 worth of groceries
alone, June said.
We need more volunteers
and more donations in order to help members of our
community have a better
way of life.

NEW CHEF, NEW MENU, NEW AMBIENCE

are value for money.
Another addition to the hotel will be the
Ballan Dinner Club, that will meet on the
first Friday of the month starting from 4th
July. We want this to be a meeting place
for any newcomers to town as well as
the locals to get together. It will also be
a way of new residents to find out what is
available in Ballan by talking to the locals.
The lounge area seats 50 to 60 comfortably
and is also available for private functions
that Damien can cater for. There is a lovely
clock wall that we are forever adding to
as well as comfortable couches to enjoy
a relaxing drink. We want your dining
experience to be a pleasurable one at

food. Now they have employed Damien

to come and experience a combination
of the pub standard food like steaks,

Study to
identify needs
Moorabool Shire and VicRoads have committed
funds to undertake a transport study for the township of Bacchus Marsh to
plan for expected growth
and associated transport
and traffic pressures. The
purpose of the transport
study is to identify the road
network needs for Bacchus
Marsh now and at various
intervals into the future to
2041.
Infrastructure
General
Manager Phil Jeffrey said
the long needed project is
an important component
of planning for the future of

the town.
With the significant residential growth occurring in
Bacchus Marsh, it is imperative we put a plan in place
that caters for the growing
population and manages
traffic movements over
time, Mr Jeffrey said.
Input from the community is an important component of this study and workshops have been scheduled
to provide an opportunity
for the community to feed
in local knowledge, help
set the levels of service and
future directions to be outlined in the plan.

Mr Jeffrey said information gathered at the sessions will assist to develop a

draft report.
When developed, the draft
report will be placed on
exhibition for a further opportunity for community
feedback.
The sessions will be held
at the Lerderderg Library,
215 Main Street, Bacchus
Marsh on Monday 23 June
and Wednesday 25 June
from 6.15pm 8.30pm.
Those wanting to attend

Generosity goes to towners!

Ill start with 200, 200,
200, 250, 300 do I hear 325?
325 once, 325 twice, sold for
$325!
That sums up how the
afternoon sounded at the
appeal for Cameron Dunne
and family at Dunnstown
FNC last Sunday.
Three auctioneers took it
in turns getting through
the truck load of goods up
for auction that looks set to
raise tens of thousands of
dollars.
Over 300 people took part
in the fundraiser after
Cameron suffered a spinal
injury in his local football
match on May 10, leaving

him with no feeling in his

body from the waist down.
All 18 CHFL clubs donated
$500 each with the official
fundraising figure to be released later in the week.
Cameron arrived at the
event from the Q.E. Rehabilitation facility in Ballarat
and spent the day greeting
his supporters.
I cant thank everyone
enough. I only expected
a little raffle, this is just
amazing. Mum, Dad, my
girlfriend Kaylee, she has
given up everything for me.
Everyone is amazing, he
said.

Young Dunnstown netballer 20 year old Bianca

Leonard thought she would
start the appeal and began
by asking for a couple of
items from people to raise
a few dollars for the Dunne
family. How wrong she was.
A couple of items turned
into so many. We will be
raffling and auctioning
items for days, she said.
No one turned down the
opportunity to donate anything. I cannot express my
gratitude to everyone for
the Dunne family.
If fresh air was for sale,
someone
would
have
bought it!

Family tree spans four generations

By Jessica Howard
Three generations of a local Ballan family have reunited at the
Myrniong and District Community Hall.
Around 70 descendants of the
Strickland family met on April 20
to celebrate the life given to them
by Edward and Joyce Strickland.
Edward (Eddie) Strickland was
born on June 12, 1928 in Ballarat,
and married Joyce Veronica
Spinner (November 22, 1929)
on June 21, 1952 in Saint Johns
Church of England, Ballan.
The long-term Ballan residents
share four sons, Robbyn, Phillip,
Eddie and Joyce Strickland with their four sons (L-R) Graeme, Graeme and David, who all atPhillip, David and Robbyn.
tended the reunion.

Other
attendees
included
some of Edward and Joyces 21
grandchildren, and 26 great
grandchildren.
Myrniong resident and son of
Edward and Joyce, Robbyn said
it was a great day which everyone
really enjoyed.
Some of the younger members
of the family met relatives they
had never met before, which was
a great thing to see, he said.
Family history including the
family tree, photos, and memorabilia were posted around the
community hall walls for the
Stricklands to enjoy.
Memorabilia involved artifacts
belonging to Edwards father,
including a muzzle-loading rifle,
which he bought at a Ballan auction for two shillings.
Family members came from
New South Wales, Queensland
and the Moorabool Shire area
to converse over refreshments,
whilst children took part in
games and activities.
It was great to have everyone
together for probably one of the
first times, we would also like to
thank the Myrniong Hall Committee for lending us the hall as
it was a really great venue to hold
such an event, Robbyn said.

Feedback

waste
GETTING rid of green waste and hard
waste will still involve a trip to the tip for
Moorabool residents under a draft waste
management strategy released for public
feedback.
The Draft Moorabool Waste Management
and Resource Recovery Strategy is now
available for comment over the next five
weeks at Moorabool Shire offices.
Under the strategy Hopetoun Park
residents would be included in weekly
kerbside garbage and recycling collections
but 120 Long Forest households across the
road will miss out.
Low density residential zoned properties
at Greendale, Pykes Creek estate, Myrniong
and surrounding Ballan, Gordon and
Mt Egerton would also have compulsory
collections.
Any areas in the farm zone that are
currently compulsory or non-compulsory
will remain the same.
Following
repeated
requests
by
recreational reserve committees of
management, the strategy proposed to
increase the number of bins allocated to
reserves.
East
Moorabool
Ward
councillor
Tonia Dudzik said there would be more
community consultation over the next
couple of years and council would consider
introducing green waste collection and
look at schemes for hard waste collections,
such as tip vouchers.
It has to be on a cost recovery basis, Cr
Dudzik said.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,
What should happen to
Mack Attack Dog? (MN 3
June).
I would not choose either
1, 2 or 3.
This is my opinion.
The dog is not to blame; it
was the owners who caused
these horrific injuries to
this little girl. Mack is a
working sheep dog, not a
pet or lap dog. Collie dogs
by their nature are snappy
and are known to bite.
These dogs should not be
left alone unsupervised
with children.
Mack should be taken off
these irresponsible people
and a new home found for
him, preferably a responsible farm owner with working dogs. I am sure a good
home could be found for
him.
People who want Mack
killed are callous and cruel.

Dear Editor,
Another mining licence
(MIN5460) was approved
on 3 May 2014 for the Wom-

bat State Forest covering

37 hectares near Spargo
Creek. The proposed work
program includes hard rock
open cut and underground
mining and bulk sampling.
Wombat Forestcare considers such activity to be
totally inappropriate in an
area that is a catchment for
the Werribee River. Residents in the area pay a special levy for the protection
of the water catchment,
which seems totally at
odds with allowing a mining venture a few hundred
metres from the Werribee
River.
The State Government is
promoting Victoria as an
excellent investment opportunity for mining and
in this rush to allow these
ventures they are overlooking critical ecological
values and community
concerns.
The Minister makes the
decision to approve mining
licenses and although there
is an opportunity for the
public to make a submission, the actual decision
rests with the Minister. A
community consultation

process occurs at the time

of mining however the
community has no power
to effect change and the
process can be as little as
informing the public via a
website.
The Wombat Forest is
slowly recovering from
massive previous exploitation and is important
habitat for many threatened species. Endangered
Powerful Owls and Greater
Gliders are recorded in the
area of the proposed mine.
The protection of our
catchments, our ecosystems and our flora and
fauna are incredibly important. The Wombat Forest is
public land and therefore
belongs to the people of
Victoria. We suggest that
the Victorian Government
is not managing it in a way
that the majority of the
community expects.

Gaining a foothold in the market

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
Owning your own home
is the great Aussie dream,
yet many first home buyers
worry that they are being
priced out of the market.
Australian Bureau of Statistics show buying has
certainly become tougher
for first timers: its latest
figures, for March this year,
showed first home buyer
finance commitments were
just 11.9 per cent of total
owner-occupier
housing

finance commitments in
Victoria, and 12.6 per cent
Australia wide.
But while this is still much
lower than the long-run average proportion of 19.9 per
cent, the trend is upwards:
it was an improvement on
February up 0.1 per cent
and on the historic low of
12.3 per cent in November
last year,
REIV and its national
counterpart REIA in Canberra continue to make representations to government
about the need for more

help for first-time buyers

greater stamp duty concessions and a bigger housing
supply, for example.
But meanwhile that dream
need not be out of reach
there are strategies to help
you get a foothold in the
property market.
For those planning to buy
their first house, unit or
apartment there is good
news too: interest rates remain at a record low, with
the Reserve Bank cash
rate just 2.5 per cent. That
makes borrowing cheaper

and repayment smaller.

House prices are still
cheaper in many areas
of Victoria than in boom
times and there are still
plenty of affordable properties if you know where to
look.
The latest median house
price figures, for the first
three months of this year,
show there are parts of regional Victoria where it is
still possible to buy a house
for less than $200,000.
Ararat, Donald, Dunolly,
Churchill, Moe, Morwell,

Merbein and Seymour all

had median prices below
this level. And there were
many more towns with
prices between $200,000
and $250,000
Ask yourself where you
want to live? Find the kinds
of homes you want, get to
know the local agents and
talk about what is available
and what you can afford.
If your preferred town or
area seems beyond your
reach, check other locations close by to see if they
may offer a cheaper alter-

native. If you are looking in

a large regional centre, its
worth considering a unit
or apartment rather than a
house, as a way of entering
the market.
The key is to try not to overextend your mortgage, and
make sure payments are
manageable, and youll be
able to enter the property
market with confidence
and in your own home
sooner. You can then benefit from capital growth,
with property a solid longterm investment.

with Tom Kingston

Take the challenge and inform government

You might have noticed in
last weeks paper (MN 10
June) a letter from Simon
Ramsay MLC Member for
Western Victoria. In the
letter Simon asked those
opposed to on shore gas
exploration to let their opposition be heard. As Simon
Ramsay said in the letter, I
would not support any legislation that would put at
risk our regional and rural
food and bre production,
water aquifers or the liveability of our rural communities. That, it seems to me,
is pretty strong language.
Of course we have all heard
pretty strong language
before from our politicians
and we all have some scepticism in regards to such
language. However, be that
as it may, Simon Ramsay is
still strongly encouraging
all those in his electorate
to have their say on this

vital issue. And we need

to take him seriously. As
Simon went on to say Our
policies will continue to be
informed by independently
established scientic facts
and a rigorous process of
public consultation. He
further states in the letter, There is currently a
moratorium on fracking in
Victoria, and presently an
extensive community consultative process regarding
onshore natural gas exploration in Victoria. And finally Simon Ramsay states,
I strongly encourage farmers, environment groups,
community groups and
individuals to express their
views at the meetings, or
to my ofce and access the
website www.naturalgasinfo.vic.gov.au for more
information on the consultation process. So if we sit
back and wait on someone

else and then moan that

the state government, on
hearing little opposition,
decides to remove the moratorium and allows fracking and the like in Victoria,
we only have ourselves to
blame. Might I encourage
all who are opposed to this
invasive and destructive
practice that will have long
term consequences on our
environment to have their
say? We are all in this together now. It is no longer
the
environmentalists
against the farmers against
community groups. No, we
are all fighting for the same
outcome.
Meanwhile, as if in another state, it seems that the
state government has given
permission for the Wombat Forest to be threatened
again. Another mining licence was approved on 3
May for the Wombat State

Forest covering 37 hectares

near Spargo Creek. The
proposed work program
apparently includes hard
rock open cut and underground mining and bulk
sampling.
I will let the Wombat
Forestcare outline their
case. They say that, such
activity is totally inappropriate in an area that is
a catchment for the Werribee River. Residents in the
area pay a special levy for
the protection of the water
catchment, which seems
totally at odds with allowing a mining venture a few
hundred metres from the
Werribee River.
The Wombat Forestcare
go on to say, The State
Government is promoting
Victoria as an excellent
investment opportunity
for mining (this seems to
stand in strong contrast to

what Simon Ramsay said in

his letter to the editor last
week) and in this rush to allow these ventures they are
overlooking critical ecological values and community
concerns.
Wombat Forestcare go on,
The Minister makes the
decision to approve mining
licenses and although there
is an opportunity for the
public to make a submission, the actual decision
rests with the Minister. A
community consultation
process occurs at the time
of mining however the
community has no power
to effect change and the
process can be as little as
informing the public via a
website.
Wombat Forestcare go
on, The protection of our
catchments, our ecosystems and our flora and
fauna are incredibly impor-

tant. The Wombat Forest is

public land and therefore
belongs to the people of
Victoria. We suggest that
the Victorian Government
is not managing it in a way
that the majority of the
community expects.
So there; you have two
challenges. One is offered
by a local member of the
government and we should
all respond to his invitation
to ensure no coal-seam gas
mining ever enters Victoria,
while in the other challenge
we need to inform the same
state government that they
are totally out of place with
community thought in supporting this threat to the
Wombat Forest.
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting:
Thursday 26th June, venue
to be announced for more
details phone Rose on
0420591028. All Welcome.

When it comes to improving the performance of your

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the
most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.

What does RAM do?

computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Round 8 v Springbank
Football
It was the annual clash for
the Jimmy Toohey Memorial Shield and the Eagles
came out of the rooms with
only one wish; a win.
Both the Reserves and
Senior teams left the Tigers
in their wake as they blew
them out of the water from
the first bounce.
Gary Busuttil kicked three
goals in the Reserves as
did Mick Nolan and James
Murphy in the Seniors.
Luke Gunnell was awarded the best player on the
ground, and, in a new initiative, a medal was awarded
for the best A grade netballer with Bree Hearn from
Springbank the recipient.
Both junior teams suffered
losses with the Under 14.5
team putting in a fine performance, despite what the
scoreboard indicated. Ben
Frazer kicked two goals
with Jack Toohey and Will
Maddern amongst the best
in the Under 17.5s.

Gordons Luke Gunnell was Best on Ground in the match

against Springbank for the Jimmy Toohey Memorial shield.
Netball
A Grade The Tigers had
a big win over Gordon 3066 with Tracey Munari and
Maggie Toohey working
incredibly hard in defence
with Kellee Frazer and
Paula Schulten toiling hard
in attack.
B Grade the opposition
were clearly the better side
on the court but in the end
Gordon took the points
with a forfeit, 16-0

C Grade the team is starting to put together some

pretty sound netball and
didnt let Springbank get
too far away from them, going down 21-38.
The youngest junior teams
had good wins over Springbank, a club that has dominated in the netball circle
for many years. The 17&U
girls played a tightly contested game, going down in
the end by 14 goals.

Demons run over Blues

Ballan Football
Seniors
The Blues had their first
real wet weather try out for
the year in the slippery conditions at Bungaree. The
Blues kept with their opponents in the first two quarters with Mark Williams
and Ryan Aquilina out-

standing in the middle with

John Dorning doing well in
the ruck. Aaron Speak gave
some spark up forward and
Zac Peoples was closely
checked all day. In the third
term Bungaree drew away
with a five goal buffer at
the last break . The Blues
defenders did an outstanding job of frustrating their
opponents and this showed
in the points scored by their
opponents. To the Blues
credit they fought back in
the final quarter and reeled
in the margin but their fate

had already been sealed.

Final Score - Ballan 6 7 43
lost Bungaree 8 18 66
Reserves
The Blues opened well and
were wracked by injuries.
At the main break they were
only three points down but
did not score a goal in the
second term. Coach David
OHanlon booted three
goals for the day and was
full of praise for the team
after the match given the
injuries to key players. The
Blues have slipped to fifth

on the ladder and hope to

get back into the winners
circle next week against
Dunnstown.
Final Score - Ballan 6 8
44 lost Bungaree 12 12 84
Under 17.5s
Bungaree sit on top of the
ladder and showed the
Blues why. Ballan had their
share of the ball but lacked
the finesse and ability to
seal the deal up forward.
Wilkinson scored two goals
with Chris Micallef relishing the pressure of the day.
Nathan Davies also put in

a tremendous effort as did

Charlie Sher. The Blues
certainly made their opponents earn every kick
with the Bungaree coach
noting after the match that
this contest was one of the
toughest his team had encountered all season.
Final score - Ballan 5 3 33
lost Bungaree 18 11 119
Under 14.5s
This team was untroubled
all day, and the players had
a field day. Ryan Bongart
and Harry Webb could do
no wrong. A convincing win

with the crew still sitting
