Lime

General:
they are used in hydrated and unhydrated state in building construction
Scope of material:
lime is used as building material depending upon its classification as class a,class
b,class c,class d,class e ,class f.

Classification:

1. class a: eminentaly hydrolic lime.
2. class b: semi hydrolic lime.
3. class c: fat lime
4. class d: magnesium or dolomite lime
5. class e: kankar lime
6. class f: siliceous dolomite lime

Uses:
1. class a shall be used for structural purposes.
2. class b shall be used for mortar and masonry purposes.
3. class c shall be used mainly for finishing coat in plastering, white-washing and
with surakhi to produce artificially hydrolic mortar.
4. class d shall be used for finishing coat in plaster.
5. class e shall be used for masonry mortar.
6. class f shall be used as under coat and finishing coat of plaster.


Procurement of lime:
lime is not usually available in nature in its free state. it shall be produced by
burning its ores in kiln.

Description:
chemical composition: as per i.s. 712 of 1964.
physical composition: as per i.s. 712 of 1964 of calasses.
it shall be pure.
impurities like ashes unburnt pieces shall be picked up and screened before
slacking.
lime shall be slaked for 1-2 weeks and shall be screened again as per its use. i.e.
seived through seive no. 250 or 240 if it is to be used as mortar and through
no.120 if it is to be used as finishing coat.
storage:
storage shall comply with i.s. 712 of 1964 . the slacked lime, if stored ,shall be
kept in a weather proof and damp proof closed shad with impervious floor and sides to
protect it against rain , moisture , weather and extraneous materials mixing with it.the
lime shall be used when it ios fresh i.e. within 14 days of its removal from kiln.

Precautions:
it should not come in contact with water before slacking.
workers handling lime should wear gloves and goggles.
quick lime evolves heat on slacking so care should be taken.
quick lime, hydrolic lime should be kept away from moisture.
all that has been ,in any way ,damaged by rain, moisture , dirt , air-slcking or any
other cause should be rejected and all rejected material should be removed from
the work site forthwith.


Mode of measurement and payment:

Measurement shall be done by volume or weight i.e. by cubic metre as unit or by tones
as unit. the payment is done by the rates of per tone or per cubic metre.
