Class/ Semester : XI IPA/ 1
Time Allocation : 2 x 45 minutes
Standard Competency : Using statistical rules, principles and properties of enumeration in
problem solving opportunities.
Basic Competency : Calculating the size of the concentration, size location, and size of
data dissemination, and interpretation.
Learning Indicator : Solving problems that has relation with central tendency : mean,
mode, median for single data and data in groups.
Material
Mean
The mean is the most common type of average. The mean of a set of data is the arithmetic
average of the set of data. In other words, the mean of a set of data is the sum of all the values,
divided by the number of values in the set. The mean formula for singular data is :

Example :
Find the mean of list below :
7, 2 , 4, 6, 3, 5, 7, 4, 3, 5, 9
Solution :
Mean ()

Mode
The mode of a set of data values is the value in the set that appears most frequently. To find
the mode, we can order the values and count each one. the most frequently occuring value is
the mode.
2

Example:
Find the mode of list below :
11, 17, 13, 15, 16, 14, 11, 17, 14, 11
Solution
Data 11 13 14 15 16 17
Frequency 3 1 2 1 1 2

Based on the data above, we can see
that the most frequenlty occuring value
is 11. So, the mode is 11.
Median
When we arrange the values in a set of data in either ascending or descending order, the
middle value is called the median. To find the median of a set of data, follow the steps :
1. Arrange the values in numerical order (from the smallest to largest).
2. If there is an odd number of values, the median is the middle values.
3. If there is an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
Example:
Find the median pof list below:
5, 7, 8, 6, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, 5, 10
Solution :
First step, we have to order the data : 3, 5, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,11,13
Second step, choose the middle data (since there is an odd number of values). Therefore,
the median is 7.
