CASE 2063-3 CASES OF ASME BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE Approval Date: August 8, 1994 See Numeric Index for expiration and any reafrmation dates. Case 2063-3 Ni-22Cr-14W-2Mo-La Alloy (UNS N06230) Section I and Section VIII, Division 1 Inquiry: May solution-annealed alloy UNS N06230 wrought sheet, strip, plate, bar, welded pipe and tube, and seamless pipe, tube, and forgings, conforming to the specications listed in Table 1, be used in welded construction under Section VIII, Division 1? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that solu- tion-annealed alloy UNS N06230 wrought sheet, strip, plate, bar, welded pipe and tube, and seamless pipe, tube, and forgings as described in the Inquiry, may be used in welded construction complying with the rules of Section I and Section VIII, Division 1, providing the following additional requirements are met. (a) Material other than forgings shall be solution annealed at a minimum temperature of 2200F, followed by a water quench or rapidly cooled by other means. Forgings shall be solution annealed at a minimum temperature of 2150F followed by a water quench or rapidly cooled by other means. (b) Forgings conforming to B 564 shall also meet the requirements of Tables 2 and 3. (c) The rules in Section VIII, Division 1, Subsection C that shall apply are those given in Part UNF for nickel alloys. (d) The maximum allowable stress values for the material shall be those given in Table 4. For Section VIII, Division 1 welded pipe and tube products, a joint efciency factor of 0.85 shall be used. For Section I, This is Electrontic File Page # 127 welded pipe and tube products, the allowable stress values shall be reduced by 15%. (e) Separate welding procedure qualications and performance qualications, conducted in accordance with Section IX, shall be required for this material. Welding shall be limited to gas metal arc and gas tungsten arc welding processes using ller metal with the same nominal composition as the base material. (f) Heat treatment after forming or welding is neither required nor prohibited. When heat treatment is applied, the temperature, time, and method of heat treatment shall be covered by agreement between the user and manufacturer. (g) For Section VIII external pressure design, Fig. 5-UNF-28.39 shall be used. (h) For Section I, which requires a temperature depen- dent parameter y [see PG-27.4, Note (6)], the y values shall be as follows: (1) 1150F and below, y p 0.4; (2) 1200F, y p 0.5; and (3) 1250F and above, y p 0.7. (i) This Case number shall be shown on the docu- mentation and marking of the material and recorded on the Manufacturers Data Report. CAUTIONARY NOTE: Austenitic alloys are subject to stress corro- sion cracking, intergranular attack, pitting, and crevice corrosion when used in boiler applications in aqueous environments. Factors that affect the susceptibility of these materials are applied or residual stress, water chemistry and deposition of solids, and material condi- tion. Susceptibility to attack is enhanced when the material is used in a sensitized condition, or with residual cold work. Concentration of corrosive agents (e.g., chlorides, caustic, or reduced sulfur species) can occur under deposits formed on the surface of these materials, and can result in severe underdeposit wastage or cracking. For successful operation in water environments, careful attention must be paid to continuous control of water chemistry. 128 Asme BPVC Code Cases 1998 Edition CCASE12063 06-15-98 13:13:21 CASE (continued) 2063-3 CASES OF ASME BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE TABLE 1 SPECIFICATION Bar B 572 Forging B 564 Seamless pipe and tube B 622 Sheet, plate, and strip B 435 Welded pipe B 619 Welded tube B 626 TABLE 2 CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS Element Composition, % Aluminum 0.200.50 Boron, max. 0.015 Carbon 0.050.15 Chromium 20.024.0 Cobalt, max. 5.0 Iron, max. 3.0 Lanthanum 0.0050.050 Manganese 0.301.00 Molybdenum 1.03.0 Nickel Remainder Phosphorus, max. 0.030 Silicon 0.250.75 Sulfur, max. 0.015 Tungsten 13.015.0 TABLE 3 MECHANICAL PROPERTY REQUIREMENTS Tensile strength, min., ksi 110 Yield strength, min. These higher stress values exceed 67%, but do not exceed 90% of the yield strength at temperature. Use of these stresses may result in dimensional changes due to permanent strain. These stress values are not recommended for the anges of gasketed joints or other applications where slight amounts of distortion can cause leakage or malfunction.
