IBM SPSS Statistics:
Whats New
New tools and features to help you accelerate and
simplify your analysis
Analytics plays an increasingly important role in helping your organization
achieve its objectives. The IBM

SPSS

Statistics family delivers the core

capabilities needed for end-to-end analytics. To ensure that the most
advanced techniques are available to a broader group of analysts and
business users, we have made enhancements to the features and capabilities
of IBM SPSS Statistics Base and its many specialized modules.
IBM SPSS Statistics 21 continues to increase accessibility to advanced
analytics through improved tools, output and ease-of-use features. This
release focuses on increasing the analytic capabilities of the software
through:
Simulation Modeling - Build better models and assess risk when inputs
are uncertain using Monte-Carlo simulation techniques.
Specialized techniques to improve overall performance - Obtain more
accurate results faster and increase productivity and effectiveness.
Improved integration with other technologies and tools - Access
common data types, external programming languages and fle types
more easily.
Our suite of statistical software is now available in three editions:
IBM SPSS Statistics Standard, IBM SPSS Statistics Professional and
IBM SPSS Statistics Premium. By grouping essential capabilities, these
editions provide an effcient way to ensure that your entire team or
department has the features and functionality they need to perform
the analyses that contribute to your organizations success.
Highlights
Build better models and assess risk using
Monte-Carlo simulation techniques.
Import data from IBM

Cognos

Business
Intelligence.
Program in IBM SPSS Statistics using
the Java Plug-in.
Improve ease of use with single sign on
between the SPSS Statistics client and
SPSS Statistics Server.
Compare two data fles to identify any
discrepancies between them.
Make better decisions using Monte Carlo
Simulation
SPSS Statistics 21 includes Monte Carlo simulation
capabilities to help you account for uncertainty in inputs
for predictive models. In this approach, uncertain inputs are
modeled with probability distributions (such as the triangular
distribution), and simulated values for those inputs are
generated by drawing from those distributions. The simulated
values are then used in the predictive model to generate an
outcome. The process is repeated many times (typically
thousands or tens of thousands of times), resulting in a
distribution of outcomes. The distribution of outcomes can
then be used to answer questions of a probabilistic nature.
With SPSS Statistics, you can:
Assess what if scenarios with greater accuracy.
Simulate data according to user-specifed parameters, and
then use that simulated data as input to predict an outcome.
Adjust the parameters used to simulate the data and compare
outcomes. For example, you can simulate various advertising
budget amounts to see how they are likely to affect total sales.
Support the use of predictive models to calculate the
outcome.

Monte Carlo simulation techniques can be in many industries
and business scenarios:
Manufacturing Determine how the cost of materials affects
proft.
Advertising/marketing Simulate various advertising budget
amounts to see the effect on total sales.
Energy and utilities See how temperature impacts energy
usage.
Finance Understand uncertainty associated with investment
planning.
Compare data les for simple quality
control
IBM SPSS Statistics 21 introduces a data fle comparison tool,
which gives you the ability to compare two datasets or two
data fles to identify any discrepancies between them.
There are two levels of comparison. The frst is a comparison
of the document metadata, and the second is a case-by-case
comparison of selected variable values.
Program in SPSS Statistics with Java
Plug-in
IBM SPSS Statistics 21 enables you to use a Java plug-in to
call SPSS Statistics functionality from a Java application and
have SPSS Statistics output appear in the Java application.
You can also use Java with SPSS Statistics to control, react
to and embed program logic into your jobs and extend the
functionality of SPSS Statistics.
Specify models more easily with IBM SPSS
Amos 21
IBM SPSS Amos 21 for Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)
introduces an alternative non-graphical method for specifying
a model.
Non-programmers can specify a model without drawing
a path diagram.
The model can be entered into a spreadsheet-like table
that can be modifed. Figure 1: Create simulated datasets based on existing data and/or known
parameters when the existing data is inadequate and for what-if.
Exchange data between IBM SPSS
Statistics and IBM Cognos Business
Intelligence
SPSS Statistics 21 now provides the ability to easily import
IBM Cognos Business Intelligence data. You can read custom
data with or without flters, and import pre-defned reports
from IBM Cognos into SPSS Statistics.
Import IBM Cognos data with Cognos calculations and/or
use aggregated data from IBM Cognos.

SPSS Statistics 21 introduces password protection of data
and output fles (encrypting) to prevent others from seeing
confdential information.

scalability and stability of IBM SPSS
Statistics Server
IBM SPSS Statistics Server makes working with large
data faster and more scalable and improves overall stability.
It provides:
Better scalability and performance through load balancing
with IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services
Ease of use with single sign on between client and server
Improved security, enabling it to be run as non-root on
UNIX/LINUX
Easier administration by allowing client and server to be
