Subjects on indigenous people, climate change

to be included in school curriculum


Subjects on indigenous people, gardening, climate change, culture, peace and
solidarity, computer courses, intellectual property and Philippine society and environment
will soon be included in school curriculum.

against indigenous people.
Rodriguez said the country is divided into different regions with different cultures
and there are indigenous communities with distinct cultures and traditions that should be
respected and protected.
1*t is in school where we learn the values of appreciating the diverse culture while
respecting each culture2s individuality and shaping the character of every human being,3
Rodriguez said.
14here is a need to include a subject that will promote peace and solidarity among
our people so that there will be more understanding of the ethnicity, customs and way of
life of every cultural group,3 Rodriguez stressed.
Rodriguez emphasized the need for the country to meet and adapt to the demand
towards the advancement of science and technology.
Rodriguez said it is time to train the young and prepare them for the vicious battle
for survival in the ne%t decades to come by providing them with a stable educational
foundation.
1(s the Philippines is under watch list as one of the countries where intellectual
property rights are ignored and piracy of intellectual creations is widespread in spite of
various laws and regulations in the country, it is also imperative that the importance of
copyright be imparted to our citizenry at an early age as well as later in life for it may be
the desired precondition that may convert the Philippines into one of the 5nowledge based
centers,3 Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said restoring gardening as part of the curriculum of elementary and high
school in public and private schools shall also educate the students and encourage them to
start growing their own vegetables as a source of food for their families.

6nder the measure, all vacant lots of public and private elementary and high
schools shall be planted with vegetables by the administrators, faculty and students of the
school.
4he measure also re7uires the inclusion of climate change adaptation and disaster
ris5 reduction in the curriculum of all elementary, secondary and collegiate schools to be
aware of the importance of ecological conservation and protection to avert climate change.
4he subject on Philippine society and the environment shall be included in the
curricula of all public and private elementary and secondary schools, including non8
formal, indigenous learning and out of school youth program.
*n addition to the teaching of the inter8relationship appreciation, conservation,
rehabilitation, promotion and development of environment, the course shall li5ewise
include the teaching of environmental laws in the Philippines.
9nvironment shall refer to the biophysical world of human beings, the maritime,
fluvial and aerial domains, the mineral, coal, petroleum oils, all forces of potential energy,
fisheries, flora and fauna and all other natural resources. (0.# jc
