Alexis tapped her pencil on her desk. Everyone in class was working on a math sheet,
but she had already finished hers. Alexis was good at math. Her friend Brianna sat in the
next row. Brianna was finished, too. She was leaning over and whispering to another
girl, Kayla.

Alexis frowned. She and Brianna had been best friends ever since they were babies.
They told each other everything. She and Brianna both agreed they didnt like Kayla.
She was mean to some people and cared too much about how she dressed. So why was
Brianna talking to her?

The bell rang. The teacher, Ms. Hunter, looked up from her desk. Turn in your papers,
class, and have a nice day! Alexis jumped out of her seat. She grabbed her backpack
and ran to get on line. She tapped Brianna on the shoulder. Hey, my brothers taking
me to see a movie later, she said. Do you want to come with us?

Brianna looked down at her sneakers. Um, I cant, she said. My mom wants to take
me clothes shopping tonight. Alexis was disappointed. That stinks! Maybe we can go
next week, then.
Sure, maybe, Brianna said.

Alexis older brother, Ryan, picked her up from school in his car. He watched her after
school sometimes while their parents worked. Ryan took Alexis for some take-out
Mexican food. Then they went to the movie theater. I want to see that movie about the
talking dog, Alexis said, as they walked into the lobby. Cant we see the one about the
car race? Ryan asked. Then he noticed something. Hey, theres Brianna! Ryan pointed
to the popcorn counter. He was right. Brianna was therestanding next to Kayla! Alexis
was stunned. Why did Brianna lie to her?

3 Drawing Conclusions 3 Birth of a Mighty River

Common Core: 3.SL.2

LEXILE: 990

DIRECTIONS: SAW . Use separate paper if needed.

The Amazon River is the longest river in South America. It flows for 4,000 miles across the
continent. The location of the river's source, or beginning, was a mystery for centuries. A eam of
explorers and geography experts recently found the tiny stream where the mighty river begins.
Birth of a Mighty River
High on the Nevado Mismi, an 18,363-foot-high mountain in Peru, a stream trickles from the
melting snow. A team of 22 explorers and geography experts recently announced that this small
stream is the source of the mighty Amazon River. The stream flows into the Apurimac (Ah-pooREE-mahk) River, which is one of the many rivers that combine to form the Amazon. Andrew
Pietowski, a high school math teacher in New York, led the team in search of the river's source.
The team searched the Andes, a range of mountains that stretches the whole western length of
South America. "Since the Amazon River has an end, there must be a beginning. I wanted to
know where it was," Pietowski said.
The River of Life
On its way across South America, the Amazon River flows through the largest rain forest in the
world. A rain forest is a dense forest that has a lot of rainfall and warm temperatures all year
round. The Amazon rain forest is almost as big as the continent of Australia. Scientists say about
80,000 different types of trees and plants can be found in the Amazon rain forest. More kinds of
fish live in the Amazon River than in the Atlantic Ocean. The river flows through forests that are
home to jaguars, armadillos, snakes, monkeys, crocodiles, and anteaters. Along the river live
about 170 different groups of native people.

3 Drawing Conclusions 4 Bringing Books to Life by Rachelle Kreisman

DIRECTIONS: SAW . Use separate paper if needed.
How do childrens books make the leap to the movies?
Lights, camera, action! Charlottes Web is spinning from the page onto the big screen. The movie hits theaters
on December 20, 2006. It is based on the popular childrens book by E. B. White. The story is about the
unlikely friendship between a pig and a spider.
Many childrens movies, from The Wizard of Oz to Stuart Little, were based on books. However, bringing a
book to life isnt always easy. "The book is such a classic," Charlottes Web director Gary Winick told WR
News. "We had to make sure that all of the wonderful classic moments were in the film." A classic is a book or
another work that stays popular over a long period of time.
Although filmmakers stuck to the books plot, they made some changes for the movie. For example, new
characterstwo crowswere added for laughs. "They [are] the comic relief," says Winick. Filmmakers
sometimes have to cut long stories to fit a movie time frame. Turning a short tale, such as The Cat in the Hat,
into a full-length film can be just as hard. At the same time, moviemakers have to figure out how to stay true to
the book.
Timeless Tales
Childrens books continue to inspire filmmakers. That is because many of the stories teach important lessons
about life. Referring to Charlottes Web, Winick says, "To learn what loyalty, trust, and friendship mean is a
great thing."
Author Spotlight
E. B. White (18991985) was born in Mount Vernon, New York. His full name was Elwyn Brooks White. He
worked as a reporter for several newspapers and magazines. In 1939, White and his family moved to a farm in
Maine. There, he was inspired to write childrens books about animals. He wrote Stuart Little in 1945. That
book was followed by Charlottes Web (1952) and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). All three books are
classics.
