JEANS POPULARITY IN THAILAND 2 Abstract This study show that why people choose to wear jeans and how popular in Thailand. This research show the style of Thai teenager that choose to wear jeans and look what fit that popular in Thailand. This research collected the data through survey and observation. Both two method was collected by look the popular jeans brand and some characteristic for the jeans such as types of fit, how much spend on the pair of jeans etc. The number of respondent that took the survey was 21 (N=21) for the most popular jeans brand was Nudie jeans and the observation look the most popular fit in Thailand and total number of respondent (N=100) for this observation the most popular jeans fit was skinny fit. There are some limitation in both two collected not based on age and gender of any demographic. Some of the data was unexpected such as the type of fit that popular in Thailand Introduction Clothing choices can show the personality of people. Jeans, Most people know it like a trouser made from denim, but the history of jeans was amazing began by Levi Strauss that made the jeans brand to be the one of the high in the fashion clothing. Some people wears jeans just the fashion but jeans is more than that. In order to understand why, jeans are popular. It is important to people who wear jeans. They know that the fabric of jeans is thick and hard to break and the pattern of the jeans have the significant, if people wears jeans for the long time it will be natural fade by the activity of the different person. In 2013, Shelly Moore identifies 4 types of denim fabric such as Cotton serge, Raw denim, Stretch-denim. Cotton serge is the 100% cotton and not has any type of fabric mix together (Shelly Moore, 2013, Para.1). Stretch denim is the denim that add some type of fabric but close to pure denim (Shelly Moore, 2013, para.4). Poly-denim is a light weight denim and easy to dress (Shelly Moore, 2013, para.3). Ramie denim is the denim that use the plant fabric (Shelly Moore, 2013, para.5) Type of fit There are many types of fit in jean. Uniqlo clothing found 6 types of fit on jeans. Selvedge denim is the denim that cans natural fade by wear a jeans for a long time (Uniqlo, 2014, para.2). Selvedge denim also has the edge of loom different from the regular jean in the present. Slim fit jean is the jeans that made from stretchy material that make easy to movement (Uniqlo, 2014, para.2). Skinny fit jeans are the jean that made for more comfortable and make shape of body more slender (Uniqlo, 2014, para.4). Regular fit straight is the classic jeans that have a straight leg to the bottom (English teacherdotme,2012, paragraph 7). Legging jeans is the jean that make by the spandex or the Fiber synthesized to make jeans more comfortable(Uniqlo,2014,para.6). Timeline of jeans At first jeans was made by 100% cotton (Andrew Ross,2014, para.1).In 19 century Levi Strauss and made the trading of jean with his brother(Andrew Ross, 2014,para.3). In 1980 finally jeans become the high fashion clothing because of sales in last 10 years (Andrew Ross,2014, para.7). In 1990s the sales or trade of jeans stopped growing (Andrew Ross, 2014, para.8). Timeline of famous jean brand Levis is the most popular jeans brand (Mary Bellis,2012,paragraph 1). In 1853, Levi Strauss left Newyork to San Francisco and open the trading of jean with his brother (Bellis, 2012, Para.3).In 1873, Levi Strauss and Company begin to use pocket stitch pattern (Bellis,2012,Para.4). Finally two-hour6se brand of design was used in 1986(Bellis, 2012, para.6) . Manufacture of Jeans Gigi Starr showed that the main part of produce jeans have 2 part such as Preproduction and Cutting and Sewing and Finishing. At first the jeans must create the type of fabric and the pattern of textile (Gigi Starr, 2011, para. 2). The pattern must follow the specific type of fit. Then use the pattern placed on the denim and start to cut the component of jeans such as pocket, leg, waistband and accent. (Gigi Starr, 2011, para.2).After finished produce component of jean. Jean started sewing the component together. Then stitched garment washed in the machine the finally processed the color (Gigi Starr, 2011, para.3). How to choose jeans This is the easy step to choose the jean by Lindsay Law. First choose the type of fit that fit perfectly (Lindsay Law, 2010, para.2). Then look for the best length that match to you (Lindsay, 2010, para.5). Then the most important thing is choose the jeans that most comfortable for you (Lindsay, 2010, para.5). Methods Survey A survey was conducted on people who were wearing jeans with no limitation on age, or any demographic at the Parc Paragon near the Louis Vuitton shop on Saturday May 29,2014. People were surveyed while they were walking through the Luis Vuitton shop. People were given a survey while they walking through the gate. Observation An observation was conducted on every age and gender at First floor of Central Pinklao. One hundred people who were wearing jeans were observed. The number of each type of jeans was recorded. This observation on 21 May, 2014 at afternoon. Participant Observation Observation was conducted on 100 people who were wearing jeans on the first floor of Central Pinklao. No Limitation were placed on age, gender, or any demographic. Survey A paper Survey was given out to random people with no limit based on age. Survey was conduct on the M floor of Siam Paragon. Result JEANS POPULARITY IN THAILAND 6 Survey The total number of respondents for this survey was 21. The results of show that the most popular jeans brand is Nudie, Diesel and others (N=5) (See Figure 1). Most respondents also choose skinny fit 52% (N=11) (See Figure 2). Almost people who were surveyed choose to spent More than 5000 on a pair of jean (N=16) (See figure 3). Most Respondents wear jeans 1 to 2 per week 33% (N=7) (See Figure 4). Observation The total number of people for the observation were 100 people. The result came from people who walk through ZEN restaurant on the first floor at Central Pinklao. Most people choose to wear skinny fit (31.9 %) and the second popular is straight (15.5%).(Figure 5) Figure 5

Implication Survey The result of the survey suggest several trend in the jeans brand and how popular of it. The result can tell how popular of jeans and what popular jeans in Thailand and what their favorite jeans brand. The result showed that skinny jeans were the most popular fit but it wasnt direct to my expectation. During surveyed most respondent are random age and gender then the data was hard to collect and generalize. The results of the survey wasnt be organized because survey werent show the correct data that came from two bias but came from most of the respondent were men. Observation The result of the observation suggested type of fit in jeans and how people choose the fit when they brought pair of jeans. The result of observation is the most popular fit is skinny jeans that was unexpected because this observation guess that the slim fit was the most popular. The result was hard to generalize because some respondent wear the jeans that the fit did not same in the original type of fit. Limitation Survey: There were some limitation in my survey. The total responses is 22. The number of people is too less, then survey result will not tell everything about people. The data is unreliable because of the survey didnt restrict on gender or any demographic then the data will made some biased in the result. Some respondent confused about my language then they ask to explain the JEANS POPULARITY IN THAILAND 8 survey some times. This survey was a little bit ran out of time because could not collect the data in the same place. Observation There were some limitation in my observation. The data was difficult to collect it because some type of fit is not match the original type of fit. The observation is no age or gender restriction then this observation can show the data that useless for this project. Some question werent show in the observation such as What type of jeans that match type of peoples shape. The data needed a lot of preparation for observation such as the time that people came and area of the most people that used to did observation. Conclusion The present study was designed to determine why people choose to wear jeans. This study has shown that jeans had a lot of history and unique style that different from other. One possible influence on why people wears jeans is design their own jeans such as how to did it and what is the original type of jeans. This project need some more research about how people look the jeans and how they buy it.
