HELLO THERE

Piggott, Arkansas
Jan, 16, i960
Guess you thought v.-e had dropped out of sight for good, h? VJell, ^ not
quite. You see, we are plagued with the disease of ''Procrastination" like a
lot of other folk, but we do have a pretty good alibi(s). In order to bring
you up to date on the iinderson householdlets go back in meniory to May 1959
The month of May was one of the busiest of our entire lifetime, 'e wore
finishing up on our teaching program at Jackson College in Honolulu, ke were
sorting our clothes, knick-knaks, etc., trying to decide vjhat to give avuay, what
to try to sell and v;hat to try to pack for shipment back to the mainland. To
make a long story short, vje sold our funiture and appliances, our station vnagon,
and packed about 12 trunks and cartons for shipment besides about 3000 volumes
of mur library books AM) about 12 suitcases. Virginia and I came on a ^veek early,
VCe flew to California then by bus for AOO miles up to Bishop Calif, where wlrs.
Barret and children met us and took us to the Bar-Rabe Lodge on Lake i/Iary in the
high Sierras, 'de stayed there a week and helped to get the lodge open and ready
for business. Then back to Burbaiik to meet Christine, David and Leilani, k"e
journeyed to Santa Barbarathere being reunited with our daughter Sherrie who
had been v;ith Christines sister for almost a year. It vas wonderful to be v;ith
Sherrie again, we visited in Santa Barbara for a favj days then to Long Beach
and Buena Park to visit our wonderful friends the Horton's. George and X went
used car shopping and filially wound up with a 1957 chev, station 7jagon. Thai
v/o traveled in across country, (still driving it too).
V.e then began our long trek to Tennessee, Since we had nev:jr motored
across the north-central section of our country we decided that would be fun,
V.Q drove up the central plain of California up to Bishop Calif, stopping by
the Bar-Rabe Lodge for a week so Christine and the kids could enjoy the beauty
of the place. Lake ..ary is 9000 feet up in the mountains and we found plenty
of snow too. "0 have often thought that Hawaii was t^e most beautiful spot on
earth but up there in the mountains it is just as beautiful.
From Bishop, Calif. 1.0 started our eastward journey across the dessert
country to Ely, to Wendover, and Salt Lake City, Utah, Then on eastward to
Denver, Colo, where we stopped for 2 wonderful days with our friends the Mc
Cartney's. From Denver to Colorado Springs was just a short hoi and our stop
there to visit our friends the McClains was an enjoyable one. Of all the people
and church groups who helped to support us on the mission field--the McClains in
Colorado and the Kuykendall's in Texas were the only individuals who did so all
the years we wore in Hav/aii| and the church in Selraer, Tenn was the only Church,
From Colorado Springs we headed into Oklahoma and a visit with our Christ
ian friends in Albert, Okla,, but on the way there w got homesick to see our
son, Ronnie, in Tennessee and to be there on his birthday the 24th of June so
we drove day and night and arrived in Selmer on the 24th, A joyous reunion
it was i
we came back to the mainland for 2 reasons in particular: 1. to reunite
our family, 2, I felt that I wanted to go on to school and try to get my doc
torate degree in Counseling Psychology. The school I wanted to to to wgs the
Univ, Of Kentucky. After visiting a week with our kinfolk in Selmer I went
to Lexington, Ky, but they would not accept mo as a graduate student. L'e felt
then that the Lord had other plans for us. t,e heard of 2 churches in iirkansas
that noeded minlstars and we investigated these and -..'ere hired by the Christian
Church here in Piggott, t-o laoved our baggage and trunlcs into the parsonage the
last week in July, The parsonage v;asn^t furnished to this was a chore wo didn't
relish but had to face itthat is, buying used furniture and appliances. One
of the members of the church hero has a furniture store so wo got noarly every
thing we needed from him, and very reasonable prices too J
In August and September I was busy getting acquainted with the congregation
and learning were each one lives. Then in October, I believe it was, I helped
one of the men of the congregation add a n^w room on to the parsonage so that
we would have the livable room space necessary to accomodate our family of seven.
November and December were busy months preparation for Thanksgiving Program
Christmas programs, etc. During this time I had 4 funerals and assisted in an
other, and one church wedding,
Nov.' about our family, Christine is teaching one section of the 6th grade.
She has 37 students. She likes it very much but of courso it taxes her strength
to capacity along with her work as mother of 5 children and church activities
too, Ronnie is a senior this yoarj Shcrrio is a junion and Ginger is a sophomor^.
David, our 9 year old son, is in the 4th grade. They all like school fine and
had no trouble making the adjustment to mainland schools, Loilani, our 3 year
old daughter (soon will be 4)> is quite a girlv;g all lovo hor and she is the
household pet as you might guess, V.e all like it fine hore in Piggott, a town
of about 3j500 population. The church has about 100 members. The church
building vjas build in 1907 but has been remodlod and is quite nice, l.e hope
that our ministry hero proves profitable to them, to us, and certainly to our
