PODS set
to hold
Murder
Mystery
Evening
PENARTH Operatic and Dra-
matic Society (PODS) will be
presenting a Murder Mys-
tery Evening at the Paget
Rooms, Penarth, on Friday,
July 11.
The event is lined up as
part of this years summer
festival.
The evening revolves
around Jack Hammer, an
accomplished professional
blackmailer. He is careful
not to be seen in public.
Almost nothing is known
about him and he has never
come to the notice of the po-
lice.
He has amassed a consider-
able fortune extorting large
sums from his rich, vulner-
able victims none of whom
to their knowledge have ever
met him face to face.
So why has he decided to
invite his latest selection of
victims to his country house?
If you think you can work
it out, come and join us in an
evening full of intrigue and
entertainment, you will not
be disappointed.
Tickets are 10 and are
available from Wendy Huxta-
ble on 029 2070 8046 in June
or Brian Gardner on 029 2071
2260 in July or in person from
Tenovus shop, Windsor Road,
Penarth.
Your evening will be com-
pleted by the inclusion of a
light supper included in the
10 so theres no mystery
in the value you will get for
your money.
See you there super sleuths.
Bubbly
to blame
for all the
laughter
ON SATURDAY, June 21, for
one night only, the ever ef-
fervescent Concept Players
return to the Paget Rooms
in Penarth with a concert
version of one of the most
famous of comic operettas of
all time, Johann Strauss Die
Fledermaus.
This operetta is packed
with songs you will instantly
recognise.
This is Strauss at his most
melodic with a plethora of
sparkling musical numbers
such as The Laughing Song,
Homeland and Brother Mine
to mention just a few.
The production, in English,
is a foolish tale of intrigue
and disguise, packed with
unforgettable characters and
superb singing. Your foot
cannot help but tap along!
For those unfamiliar with
this story, it follows Dr Fal-
ke is planning revenge on
his friend Gabriel von Ei-
senstein for a recent joke,
which resulted in Falke be-
ing pushed into a fountain,
dressed as a bat, exposing
him to ridicule the next day.
This sets off a series of
comic events which culmi-
nate in a masked ball and a
spell in prison.
The constantly flowing
Champagne is blamed for
much of it; as the song says
Chacun son got!
Last years concert was a
great success and sold out
quickly.
This concert version of
Die Fledermaus comes on
the heels of the critically
acclaimed The Mystery Of
Edwin Drood and Lend Me A
Tenor which played to great
audiences across South
Wales.
Concept Players have built
a reputation for quality pro-
ductions with an innovative
streak. This exciting and
funny concert is further
proof of that.
Tickets are 10 and are
available from the 029 2049
0019 or via the cConcept
Players website.
Further information about
Die Fledermaus and the Con-
cept Players can be found at

PENARTH Pier Pavilion will
be hosting the towns first ever
Chamber Music Festival featur-
ing the leader of the Welsh Na-
tional Opera Orchestra, David
Adams.
The music festival will be held
on the weekend of Friday, July 11,
to Sunday, July 13.
Chamber music is a formof clas-
sical music that was originally
composed for a small group of in-
struments traditionally a group
that could fit in a palace chamber.
Penarth Pier Pavilion will be
bringing this beautiful music
form to life during July 2014.
The events artistic director is
Mr Adams who is leader of the
orchestra of the Welsh National
Opera and a violin tutor at the
Royal Welsh College of Music and
Drama.
Im delighted that Penarth
Chamber Music Festival is bring-
ing world class chamber musi-
cians to the stunning setting of
Penarth Pier Pavilion, said Mr Ad-
ams.
We have worked hard to ensure
that the programme is varied, and
highlights for me will be the Gala
concert featuring The Endellion
Quartet and our special Sunday
Brunch concert which is dedicated
to music influenced by the First
World War, including Howells and
Elgar.
Music will be performed by The
Endellion Quartet and David Ad-
ams and more acts to be confirmed.
The programme will include music
from composers such as Schubert,
Mozart, Arensky, Howells, Elgar and
more.
Tickets are 4-18 and will be avail-
able at The Pavilion, by phone or on-

Italian folks songs have
been a part of my life ever
since I was a kid chasing af-
ter the ice-cream van with
my friends while it blasted
out O Sole Mio.
None of us knew what the
song was. Well, I didnt until
my Dad played a version of it
sung by Enrico Caruso after
one Sunday lunch.
I knew it sounded famil-
iar but couldnt place it, all
I knew was that it made me
feel happy.Since those days,
I have sung many songs, but
Im always drawn back to
this area of music. I think be-
cause its spontaneous. And
the songs themselves are sim-
ple but about the biggest and
best things: love, loss, jour-
neying away, coming home,
family, living life.
In Italy especially, this
music is just in the people, a
part of everyday life. It seems
to inspire people, young and
old, to dance and sing togeth-
er. It makes a bridge between
generations. And it reminds
me of sharing happy times
together with family and
friends. Singing these songs
makes me feel a part of some-
thing good
Celebrating UK album sales
of well over one million and
four Top Ten albums, Alfie
Boe will perform favourite
classic tracks with his or-
chestra from all his albums
including Bridge Over
Troubled Water, Granada,
God Give Me Strength, Ma-
ria and Nessun Dorma, as
well as performed by Alfie
in ITVs hit period drama Mr
Selfridge, where he appeared
as tenor Richard Chapman,
he will sing Danny Boy and
of course perform the iconic
song Bring Him Home from
Les Miserables.
And SOL3 MIO will be Alfie
Boes Special Guests on this
tour. Made up of two tenor
brothers, Pene and Amitai
Pati from Auckland, New
Zealand and their baritone
cousin Moses Mackay, SOL3
MIO is the combination of
three powerful and moving
operatic voices, with more
than a dash of
uncontainabl e
Samoan humour
thrown in.
