ANALYSIS REPORT OF THE TRANSLATORS LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR

IN THE 21
ST
CENTURY

I. Background:

The purpose of this research is to demonstrate which competences that
translators need in order to develop leadership behavior are the most significant
and how these have an effect on the development of translators. We chose four
areas as the most important in leadership skills for our research and these areas
are: communicative, relationship, motivational and organizational. Together, this
group of competences provides a comprehensive overview of the leadership
behavior of translators in the 21
st
century.

II. Materials:

To perform the research we created a short questionnaire divided into 4 areas
considered important in leadership behavior and chose two questions per area.
The questions were obtained from a website related to leadership behavior
recommended by the English course professor. With the intention of getting data
that would be easier to measure, the questionnaires will include a Likert scale
where a score of 1 is considered to be very unimportant and 5 very important.

III. Procedure:

First of all, we asked five faculty professors, who are also known to be
successful translators, to participate in the research and arranged short
meetings with them where we gave them the questionnaires. Then we asked the
professors to answer them quickly and without much thought so as to ensure
sincerity in the answers.

After the 5 professors had filled the questionnaires, we compared and analyzed
the information and created an average of each area with the intention to get the
results. To get the average score of each area first we added the score of the
questions from each professor and then divided by the number of professors (5),
after that we added the average obtained in the other question of the same area
and divided by the number of questions (2).
We will make an example of the procedure used to obtain the average score of
the communicative area:
Question 1 :(4+4+4+4+5)/5=4.2
Question 2: (4+3+3+5+5)/5= 4
Then:
(4.2+4)/2=4.1

IV. Results

The next graphic represents the results obtained:

As can be observed, the two competences considered the most important are
the communicative and relationship competences. In the questions related to
the communicative competence, four of the five professors marked the number
4 to show the importance of this competence and just one of them gave the
highest score (5). While in the questions associated to the relationship
competence, the majority of the professors also chose the highest scores (4
and 5), however just one of them gave 3 points to this competence.

On the other hand, the two least important competences have a gap of 0.2
points in their averages. In the case of the motivational competence, the
professors were not in agreement when it came to its importance. For example,
one of them gave it a value two while other gave it a five. At the same time, we
can see that in the organizational competence, the professors had different
opinions once again. They gave very different scores in each of the questions
and in one of those questions almost no one agreed with the other.

V. Conclusions

In average competences are deemed by the professors to have a higher than
average importance.

Though the communicative and relationship skills had the highest scores, the
result points out that all four of the competences have similar importance as
there are no big gaps between averages.

Through the research it was concluded that every area helps us to become a
good leader and a successful translator.
