Though Misfortunes
Have Been Many
The retiring officers of tbe Mansfeld
Mining Smelting company which
has its mines near Patagonia In Santa
Cruz county have Jssjed the following
statement to the 5500 stockholders of
the company
When we held our annual meeting
In January 190 It was our hopct ami
belief that by the date of the next
annual meeting the Mansfeld would
be on a paving basis that It is not
is no fault of the property but Is due
to unfortunate conditions and circum-
stances

which It was bevond our pow

er to correct or control With the re
port of the January 1908 meeting was
incorporated a report from our gen
eral manager stating that all that was
now required to put tho Mansfeld on
a dividend paying basls was a reduc-
tion

plant and by vote of the stock-

holders

which bonds 1911500 were purchasd
by stockholders

rapidly as possible It was our expec
tation that we would be able to start
the smelter about Jane 15th 1908
but as It wasnearlng completion wo
learned that this would be Impossible
We found that the expense of construc
tion and Installation had exceeded the
estimates of the smelter firm and our
general manager by about J700000
and that there were labor and material
bills of about S600000 due at the prop
erty with only a small cash balance
on hand

of stock to provide funds to pay the
debts continue the development work
and get the tmelter In operation By
September 15th the amount offered
had been subscribed and a good port-

believe that the smelter could be

notified us that a cloudburst bad de

Cap workings of that mine from which

siderable sum of money to repair the
road and restore the Black Cap work-
ings
