General Information
Brief History

The Brian Webb Dance Company is a non-profit organization that is currently
presenting their 35
th
season of contemporary dance to Edmonton and its surrounding
areas. Brian Webb is the artistic director of BWDC, and has been an influential dancer
and presenter in the Canadian dance scene since the 1970s. Through Brians
commitment and hard work the BWDC has the largest contemporary dance season
west of Toronto.
Gaols and Achievements

The Brian Webb Dance Companys achievements are of high regard and impressive
in the dance community. The companys highest achievement is theyre current running
their 35
th
season; and have also been recognized as having the largest contemporary
dance season west of Toronto. The BWDC additionally is continuing their youth initiative
program, where the BWDC host 100 high school students at every show for the season
to encourage the experience and involvement in the dance community.
Goals of the BWDC have a lot to do with collaboration. The collaboration of
cultivating discussion between dance artists and their audiences, and established and
emerging artists is a key goal the BWDC wants to bring to the dance community.
Building communication channels between professional artists and their communities
through educational institutions in an ambition the BWDC follows through on.

Geographical Region/ Audiences

The Brian Webb Dance Companys celebrates dance that reflects diversity of our
contemporary experience and reaches a broad audience base. Research provided from
this year reflected that our general audience base was: educated with a University
degree, strongly interested/ active in a variety of arts activities, lives within the
Edmonton, AB, and females were age 51-60 and the majority of males were 41-50. With
the knowledge of this material the BWDC wants to extend a passage for youth to
become involved and experience contemporary dance in a professional setting.
International, national, and local talent is attracted to Edmonton to take
advantage of the BWDCs performance opportunities. With these new and diverse
performances presented by the BWDC, audiences are continuously enticed and
inspired to constantly support the dance community.
Reasons for Support

The Brian Webb Dance Company has been established since 1979, and is a
company about dance, that reflects a contemporary experience. BWDC also helps
promote their local and international guest artists, and involve the artists in workshops
and artist talks; as well as, providing residencies. The development of youth in the
contemporary dance scene is a strong commitment that the BWDC; as well as, foster
dialogue between artists and audiences (see vision and mission statement in the
appendix of this document.). Brian Webb wants to ensure young people have an
opportunity to experience professional contemporary dance in a positive and creative
environment.

The Brian Webb Dance Company is a unique organization, not only because of
their presenting of world premier performances, but also because they are recognized
as the largest complete season of contemporary dance west of Toronto. The BWDC
has the resources to help develop contemporary dance; and in addition, promoting local
and emerging artists within the Edmonton dance community. Through the companys
residencies and their youth initiative program the BWDC has the ability to really extend
themselves into the dance community and reach fresh audiences. The BWDC needs to
fundraise because it is a not-for-profit organization and solely relies on the generous
donations from their members, donors, sponsors and the government.
With sponsor support the BWDC can maintain and build upon the legacy of the
companys commitment to producing and developing contemporary dance for
Edmonton youth. Audience members who attend the BWDCs shows come for the
appreciation of dance and to experience the power, freedom and originality of
contemporary dance expression. Developing dance appreciation in high school students
as young adults will benefit the youth initiative program by continually revealing
contemporary visual performances to the youth. Students will undergo emotional,
cultural and artistic exposure through contemporary dance; therefore, providing the
young dance supporters with opportunities to become involved in the dance community.
Donating to the youth initiative program Giving Back the Experience will benefit the
BWDC by allowing high school students to have the ability to attend dance shows, pre-
show and post-show talks, and workshops.

Project
Giving Back the Experience
The project Giving Back the Experience is to collect donations to support the
purchasing of all the tickets for the youth initiative program. The cost of hosting 600 high
school students throughout the season will cost $21,000, and supporting accessibility to
the art for youth is one aspect of what the BWDC is about. The youth initiative program
is about providing a rich contemporary dance experience to these younger dance
supporters. The program offers much more than just the dace experience the student
will also be involved in the pre-show and post-show talks, and the workshops available.

Purpose and Objectives
The main purpose of the project Giving Back the Experience is to obtain
funding through corporate donation to support the youth initiative program. The BWDC
is requesting a donation of $21,000 to cover the costs of all the students tickets for this
years season. Donations will enrich the lives of these youth in hopes of creating a
stronger appreciation for the arts. As individuals art can be a powerful force that impacts
a person on a psychological and emotional level that that is determined by ones
perceptions. In society our insights of what beauty is, is influenced by the general
publics definition; and by that definition art becomes a narrow subject that is overly
simplified. The BWDC strives to demolish those conceptions of art, and allow high
school students to develop their own understanding through the youth initiative
program.

The BWDC wants to actively convey to the public a positive difference that the
arts make in the individual and collective lives of youth in Edmonton. One step would be
to establish and build relationship opportunities with the high school student between
artists, artisans, and arts organizations will generate more involvement. Communication
of these groups throughout the season will establish communication, understanding,
appreciation, and relationships. Another stage would be to build supportive relationships
with high school students, in a way that provides a rich dance experience for the
purpose of giving the students access to contemporary dance that will enable them to
feel engaged and communicated towards. Accomplishing this goal the BWDC will work
with the faculty of the high schools to create effective programing that helps the
students develop an appreciation for art.

Evaluation and Monitoring
The project plan will be evaluated in a variety of methods throughout each process
of the project. Research into other facilities that offer a similar program where they offer
free admission to youth will help determine the success of the program. Plans for
monitoring the youth initiative program will be to determine the total amount of
donations gathered for the purchasing of the youth tickets.
Another way of evaluating the success of the project is to track and record the media
coverage of the event. By recording any media clippings in newspapers, television/

radio coverage, web mentions, or other media reporting of the fundraiser will give

Vision
Dance celebrates our aliveness in the moment and dance is always about the
dancing; the dancing that is taking place right before the audience. The dancing body
feels its senses totally engaged and communicates this aliveness to the viewing public.
The dance is not complete until it is received by the audience. This exchange between
the dancer and the viewer is what makes contemporary dance alive in the here and
now. The Brian Webb Dance Company is a producer and presenter of contemporary
dance. The BWDC is a community-minded, dynamic, artistic builder: a team builder. We
build our work through collaboration - the democratic exchange of ideas to create
something new.
Mission
The mission of the BWDC is to foster dialogue between dance artists and
audiences. As well as, building bridges between established and emerging artists and
encouraging communication between professional artists is the commitment of the
BWDC. The organizing interaction between the professional arts and educational
institutions is a part of the programming that the BWDC offers and takes huge pride in.
