Questions
Depending on your situation (nationality, qualifications, your chosen Masters degree),
you will be asked a number of specific questions. Some of these are explained below.
You will not necessarily be asked all the questions.
Send in certified copies of your higher education certificates and
transcripts
A transcript is a list of all the subjects you have taken during a programme of study,
with the results obtained and often the credit value of each subject. If you are
currently studying in higher education, your university will be able to produce a
transcript with subjects you have taken so far.
o If you have not yet graduated, download the 'Proof of Anticipated Degree'
form (www.uu.nl/masters/admission/forms).
o Abbreviations used: UU = Utrecht University, UCU = University College
Utrecht, RA = Roosevelt Academy.
o If the certificates/transcripts are not in English, French, German, Spanish or
Dutch, send official translations in one of these languages.
o Any transcript, certificate or diploma sent to us must be a certified copy. Your
school/university will certify original documents by stamping their copies with
a school/university stamp. Every certified copy must contain an original (not
photocopied) stamp and an original signature (not photocopied).
Submit a letter in English outlining your motivation
In your letter, address the following questions: Why do you want to study at Utrecht
University? Which subjects and subject areas are you most interested in and why? Do
you have pertinent work experience and interests? What career do you want after
you graduate? Does your educational background match the programme?
Include 2 references/recommendation letters
Download information for the referee (www.uu.nl/masters/admission/forms).
If you want to do a Dutch-taught Master's degree and Dutch is not your first
language
If the language of instruction in your Masters programme is Dutch, you must pass a

OSIRIS Incoming Students - Application Instruction 3/6

Dutch language examination. If you are a native speaker of Dutch with a foreign
diploma, please contact the UU Admissions Office for more information.
o Utrecht University accepts the Dutch language examination NT2, programma
2 (Dutch as a second language, level 2) administered by the Department of
Examinations of DUO. It is advisable to register with DUO as early as possible.
For more information on the Dutch language examination please contact DUO,
Department of Examinations, through www.ib-groep.nl.
o In addition, the University recognises the Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde
taal. Please note that we only accept 'Academische Taalvaardigheid' and
'Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs').
o If you have no knowledge of Dutch, please note that it takes at least one year
to develop a relatively good command of the language. The James Boswell
Instituut offers Dutch language courses designed to prepare you for the
examination. For more information visit www.jbi.uu.nl or e-mail
james.boswell@jbi.uu.nl.
To be admitted to an English-taught Master's degree you need to have a
sufficient command of English...
o Information about proficiency in English
(www.uu.nl/masters/admission/language).
o Have you applied for a teacher education programme? This language
requirement only applies for a BITEP programme.
Tick the box indicating how you intend to fund your studies and living
costs.
Download the Statement of Financial Resources form
(www.uu.nl/masters/admission/forms). This question does not need to be answered
by residents of the Netherlands and/or Dutch nationals.
If you need to apply for a visa and/or student residence permit, you will have to
prove that you have sufficient funds to meet your study and living expenses. As part
of the residence permit process you will be asked to submit proof of financial
resources or a statement of financial support from a sponsor (i.e. an institution or
individual) indicating that you will be supported financially, covering all necessary
travel and living expenses, as well as the cost of tuition. Please include details about
any scholarships that you have applied for.
Note that scholarships do not necessarily cover the costs of a full year. You may
need to find additional funding to cover your study and living expenses.
Do you need a student visa for the Netherlands?
You do not need a visa to enter the Netherlands if you are a citizen of a European
Union member state, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New
Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, the USA or Vatican City State. Nationals
of all other countries need an entry visa in order to study in the Netherlands.
Please note that it is your responsibility to obtain an entry visa. However, if you are
accepted into a Utrecht University Masters programme, the University will provide
priority processing of your visa application. To be eligible for priority processing, you
will be asked to submit a passport copy and proof of financial resources.
We advise you to contact the Dutch Embassy in your country three months before
you submit your visa application. The reason for this advice is that you may have to
go through additional steps as part of the visa application process. Please note: if you
are from the Dominican Republic, Ghana, India, Nigeria or Pakistan, you may have to
submit a legalised copy of your birth certificate to the Dutch Embassy in your country
in order to obtain a visa. The process to obtain a legalised document in your country
may take up to three months. You do not need to enclose the legalised document
with your application for a Masters programme at Utrecht University.

The legalisation confirms that a document was issued by someone with the authority
to issue it and that the signatures it bears are genuine. Dutch Embassies are
authorised to legalise foreign documents for use in the Netherlands. Applicants

OSIRIS Incoming Students - Application Instruction 4/6

must submit evidence to confirm that the information in the document is true and
correct. The Embassy then decides whether the submitted evidence is sufficient.

More information about document legalisation can be found at
www.minbuza.nl/english > welcome to the Netherlands.

For more information about entry visas, see www.nuffic.nl/immigration.

Do you need a Dutch residence permit?
Citizens of a European Union member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or
Switzerland do not need to apply for a residence permit. Nationals of all other
countries must, if they are staying in the Netherlands for more than 3
months, apply for a residence permit upon arrival in the Netherlands in order to
be registered as a university student. More information about the residence
permit application process (www.uu.nl/university/international-
students/EN/arrivingandliving/visa). The University will also give you more
information after your arrival.
"Please send your documents as soon as possible to..."
You need to make sure that your documents are received by the university before
or on the application deadline.
Have you entered a Dutch and a non-Dutch qualification in the section 'Previous
qualifications'? If the most relevant previous qualification is Dutch, please send all
your documents to the Master's programme. If the most relevant previous
qualification is non-Dutch, please send all your documents to the Admissions
Office.
More information about addresses can be found in 'UU Admissions Application'.
Send application:
o First check your details.
o Then click Send application.
o After sending your application, you will receive an e-mail for you to
confirm your application and details. If you haven't received this e-mail,
please check the junk-mail of your inbox. If you don't confirm this e-mail,
you will receive this e-mail again after 3 days.
o After you have confirmed your application, you will receive a student
number. Make sure you put your student number on all documents that
you send to the University. This will avoid serious delays and problems in
the processing of your documents. When contacting the University, make
sure you have your student number handy.
o We will consider your application as soon as we have received the required
documents.
o The deadline is the date on which we must have received everything in good order.

How to submit documents digitally and in hardcopy
To process your application as quickly as possible, we ask you to send all forms and
copies by e-mail. However, to verify the authenticity we need to receive a number of
documents as hardcopy as well.
If you have no means to make good scans, you can send the required documents in
as hardcopy. However, this may delay the processing of your application.

You can download the forms at www.uu.nl/masters/admission/forms and complete
them in Word. Name each file as follows: start with your Utrecht University student
number, then, after a dot, enter the type of document. For example:
