In actuality, using a linear growth model for population is not mmmon-
Most models are exponential models, due to the fact that most populations
experience relative growth, i.e.2olo growth per year. Linear models for nonlinear
relationships lke pnpulation work only within a smal] tirne frarne vatid close to
the time of the data modeled. Discuss some of the false conclusions
you might
reach if you use your linear model for times far from 1980-2008-

Reflective Writing:
Give some other examples of real-life situations that are modeled by linear functions.
Describe why it would be important to understand the rate of change of these systems.
Reflect on how this project relates to the real world. How does this project relate to other
classes you have taken? How does this project relate to other aspects of your life? How
did this project change the way you think about how algebra can be applied to the real
worlilother classes/your life? State what ideas changed and why. If this project did not
change the way you think, write how this project gave further evidence to support your
existing opinion about applying algebra. Be specific.
Real-life situations that are modeled by linear functions are used when cities are
determining how much water is available to the residence. They are used to compare
years in the past and analyze how future years will be, on the water supply. Many
companies also use linear functions, to forecast the their revenue and also the company
loss. In the company I work for, I know that we use forms of linear functions to forecast
how the equipment division is going to turn out at the end of the quarter and year. The
information helps to tell, whether we will be at a loss or gain, and what needs to happen
in order to reach our goal.
It is important to understand the rate of change, because it is a tool that is
extremely common in the real world. And can also be used in so many different real life
contexts'. This project relates to the real world, by analyzing the rate of change of the
population. This can help in so many different ways; determining how many homes need
to be built, how many
jobs
need to be created, how many schools that need to be built,
etc.
This project relates to an economy class that I took a couple of semesters ago. We
would have to take many different financial situations and determine what are net and
gross income was. This project relates to other aspects in my life by my daily
job,
as
described above. This project also relates to home improvements that we do around my
home, to determine how much material is needed in order to complete a project, and how
much money each week we need to save in order to complete the project.
This project changed my view by understanding how English and Algebra are
extremely interchangeable. I found it very interesting that by doing an equation that
seems to
just
be a bunch of numbers and an inequality sign can actually provide very
meaningful and valuable information. I also found it interesting when I completed the
linear function and plugged it back into the story problem, how it made perfect sense and
how to provide a different point of view.
