Oxford Reference for Windows

The Oxford Compendium on CD-ROM
Hard-disk space requirements:
Concise Oxford Dictionary, Eighth Edition 6.7 Mb
Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations 1.5 Mb
Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, Fourth Edition 4.1 Mb
Oxford Thesaurus 4.8 Mb
Application 1.5 Mb
The notes in this README file supplement the manual by
explaining how to use the CD-ROM version of Oxford CompLex.
Note: If you install the contents of the CD-ROM on to your
hard disk, you can use the manual as it is, without further
reference to this README file.
Note: The numbers in this README file refer to the sections
in the manual.
2.1 System requirements
To use Oxford CompLex you will need:
* an IBM PC or full compatible with a minimum
80386 SX processor
* 4 Mb of RAM
* a VGA monitor or better
* MS-DOS 3.1 or higher
* Windows 3.1
* a Microsoft Windows-compatible CD-ROM drive and MS-DOS
CD-ROM extension software (MSCDEX) version 2.0 or
higher.
* A Microsoft mouse (or compatible device) is recommended.
* Note: If you wish to install the application and books
on to your hard disk, rather than using Oxford CompLex
from the CD-ROM, you will need a hard disk with the free
disk space noted at the beginning of this README file.
If you wish to run Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM,
then you will only need enough hard-disk space to
install the OUP fonts (0.5 Mb)
Running Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM
2.2 Installation
1. Load Windows as normal.
2. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
3. Select RUN... from the FILE menu.
4. Into the Command Line field type
D:\SETUP <RETURN>
(Where D is your CD-ROM drive letter.)
5. You have three options:
* Complete Setup
This installs all files on to your hard disk. If you choose
this option, and follow the instructions given by the
installation program, you can use the Oxford CompLex manual
as it is, and do not need to refer further to this README
file.
* Custom Setup
This allows you to choose which books to install on to your
hard disk. Again, you should follow the instructions given
in the installation program. You do not need to refer to this
README file again unless you wish to install another book
from the CD-ROM.
Note: if you already have the Oxford CompLex application on
your hard disk, choosing to install another book via the
Custom Setup will automatically update your book shelf.
* CD-ROM Setup
This allows you to run Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM. Select
which book(s) you wish to view in the Oxford CompLex book
shelf.
Note: if you are running Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM, you
may choose to view another book on your bookshelf via the
CD-ROM Setup.
2.5 Removing Oxford CompLex from Windows
When you are running Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM, most of
its files are not installed on your hard disk. However, in
order to entirely remove Oxford CompLex from your computer
you need to:
1. Delete the Program Items from within Windows.
2. Delete the Program Group from within Windows.
3. Remove the OXFORD.INI file from the Windows directory.
4. If you installed the LOOKUP facility in Word for Windows 2,
see Section 7.3 in your manual on how to remove this
facility.
5. If you installed the LOOKUP facility in Word 6, follow
these instructions to remove this facility:
1. Select Customize from the Tools menu.
2. Select the Menus tab from the Customize dialog.
3. Remove the Copy To CompLex menu item and its menu
separator.
4. Select the Tools tab from the Customize dialog.
5. Remove the button from the toolbar.
6. Close the Customize dialog by clicking the Close button.
7. Select Macro from the Tools menu.
8. Delete the macro called CompLex.
9. Click the Close button in the Macro dialog.
Press the F1 function key for help at any stage.
The CompLex link feature is now deinstalled from Word 6.
Consult your MS-DOS and Windows manuals if you are unsure how
to carry out these steps.
2.6 Help
For further help on using Oxford CompLex from the CD-ROM,
consult the CompLex from a CD-ROM section in your
application Help text in the HELP menu.
3.1 The Main Window
If you only have one book installed (for example, only the
Concise Oxford Dictionary), the book shelf is not shown.
7.1 Making Word for Windows aware of Oxford CompLex
If the setup program detects a copy of MS Word for Windows
during installation, you will be asked if you wish to
install the link between CompLex and MS Word.
If you select "Yes", the program will prompt you with the
version and location of MS Word which it has found. You
may correct these details if necessary.
Setup then runs Word, installs the link and closes down
Word again before announcing that Setup is complete.
Note: The LOOKUP facility between Oxford CompLex and Word
for Windows can transfer up to 200 characters at a time.
If you wish to use the LOOKUP facility between Oxford
CompLex and Word for Windows, do not open more than one copy
of Oxford CompLex at a time.
