(a) What is initial setting time? Describe the procedure to
determine initial setting time? (4 M)
(b) What is seasoning of timber? Describe any one method of

(c) A steel shaft of 0.5 m diameter, transmits 200 kW of
power at 50 rpm. Determine maximum shear stress
developed? Also calculate angular twist if the length of the
shaft is 20 times diameter (G = 80GPa) (4 M)

(d) A 0.5 m diameter and 100 long pipe line carrying 0.5
m

/sec discharge is fitted with a valve at downstream end.
Calculate the rise of pressure caused within the pipe due to

(e) A symmetrical three hinged parabolic arch has a span of 16
m and a rise to the central hinge of 4 m. It carries a vertical
load of 16 kN at 4 m from the left hand end calculate the

(a) A rectangular beam of 200 mm wide and 450 mm effective
depth has a factored shear force of 200 kN at critical
section M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel is used
for both stirrups and main steel.

(a) A cantilever ABC of length 3.0 m carries two concentrated
loads of 2.0 kN and 1.2 kN at B and C as shown in figure.
The cross-section of the cantilever is given below. For AB
portion, breadth is 12 cm and for BC portion, breadth is 6
cm. Depth is uniform all through and is 10 cm. E for beam
material may be taken as 200 GPa. Find the slope and
deflection at the free end C of the beam.

(a) A tie member of a truss consists of double angle section,

of 12mm thick gusset plate. Design a moment free fillet
welded connection required to support a factored tensile
force of 500kN. The yield stress and the ultimate tensile
stress of steel and welds are 250 MPa and 410 MPa,
respectively. The welding is done at workshop

(b) Determine the safe load P that can be carried by the joint as
shown in figure. The bolts used are 20 mm diameter grade
4.6. The thickness of flange of I-section is11.6mm and
bracket plate is 12mm.Assume grade of steel is Fe410 and
end distance is 40mm. (10 M)
(c) A steel column 5.5m long carries a design compressive
load of 2000 kN. The column is effectively held in position
and unrestrained against rotation at both ends. Determine
the spacing between the sections for maximum efficiency
and check the adequacy of the section. Design a suitable
batten system without connection details, whose cross
section is shown in figure. The design stress in axial
compression may be taken from following table. Use
Limit state design.

deflected shape of the frame shown below. The ends, A

(d) A box grider of pre-stressed concrete bridge of span 40 m
has overall dimensions of 1200 mm by 1800 mm. The
uniform thickness of the walls is 200 mm. The live-load
analysis indicates a maximum live-load moment of 2000
kN m at the centre of the span. The beam is prestressed by
parabolic cables with an effective force of 7000 kN. The
cables which are concentric at supports have an
eccentricity of 800 mm at the centre-of-span section.
Compute the resultant stresses at the centre-of-span

07.
(a) Determine the actual time taken by the grader to grade and
finish 10km of a village road formation with 6 m width for
single lane road with that grader equipment having width
of 3 m using single pass with speed of 5 KMPH,. Assume
the equipment efficiency based on operator skill,
equipment characteristics and working conditions as 75 %.

(c) Three uniform rods OA, OB and OC having the same
length l, cross-sectional area A and of the same material
remaining in the same vertical plane support a load W at O
as shown in fig. Determine the forces in the members.

marked. Determine the critical path based on the concepts
of slack and its standard deviation. Also compute the time
