Dear Hiring Manager:

I am Patrick Krispin, a Junior Energy, Business and Finance major at The Pennsylvania State
University. I came across Eclipse Resources after meeting your CFO Matthew DeNezza
through a mutual friend at a dinner recently and decided to perform research on availability
for a career opportunity. After looking through positions, I wanted to express my interest in
the position Gas Trader for your company. I would be honored to be considered in the
candidacy for this position, as it seems to be a perfect place to begin my professional career
in the Oil and Gas Industry. Through my experience in the field is not ample, I believe that
my ability to communicate effectively and educational background would prove to be a
positive asset to Eclipse

As a Junior in my major, it is evident that the scope of jobs available to me is widely
stretched. I am currently enrolled in a summer course specifically dealing the crude oil and
natural gas commodity trading. There have also been a number of courses that deal with the
essentials of business marketing and strategic management that I have taken in my time at
Penn State. My in depth knowledge of using Microsoft Office throughout these courses have
put me in a place of efficient capability when it comes to capital and stock investment, as
well as effective communication with third party business partners. Also, since my father has
worked at ExxonMobil Corp. for over 25 years, it is safe to say that Oil and Gas has been a
part of my life since I can remember.

While my work experience in the industry is vague, I have gotten exposure to other sides of
the business world that cater to teamwork, leadership, and working in a fast-paced
environment at an efficient rate. My communication skills are excellent as I speak and
understand both English and Spanish fluently. My ability to lead a team of colleagues to
achievement of a common goal is also an asset to my personality. I like to be part of a team
and am also easily coachable, leading to adaptability and quick learning on the go. I learned
through experience to provide possible solutions to my supervisors when presented with a
problem as opposed to simply portraying an issue expecting others to solve it for me. I also
have the humility ask questions when I am ill informed or lacking direction.

The attached resume provides more details about my assets in education and work
experience. Furthermore, I would appreciate the opportunity to meet and discuss with you
any questions or concerns about my application, along with any other aspects of my possible
contribution to Eclipse Resources.. I am available every afternoon at (832) 465-4337, or
anytime at psk5031@psu.edu

Yours Sincerely,
Patrick Krispin

Chevron Argentina

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing this cover letter in a response to your career opportunity website ad. I found the
format of your postings to be enticing and specifically wanted to inquire about the position
of Exploration and Production in Buenos Aires or Neuquen Argentina. The position in the
Technical Professional Discipline of Earth Science is one that greatly appealed to me due to
my educational, personal and cultural background. My education, fluency in English and
Spanish, and my former experience living in a South American country provide abilities of
essential contributions to be made to your team in Argentina.

My education is specified in the area of Energy, Business and Finance here at Penn State
University, where I have taken many courses on the production and exploration of drilling
for oil. While not an engineer, I have a significant understanding of the processes essential to
Chevron Corporation. Throughout my education, I have taken various courses with
exploration and extraction as the central theme. Most of my majors courses were designed
by professors with backings in Oil and Gas industries.

When it comes to my work experience in the field, I have a vague history. However, I
believe this to be a quality of mine in that I can provide a brand new, fresh perspective to the
processes in which the work is done. Also, my passion lies in new ways to extract to be more
economically and environmentally friendly. I believe highly in a never ending strive to work
diligently, but base my motives on personal morals like integrity, honesty, and betterment of
the community. Many of these values are clearly stated in what kind of employee you seek.

The attached resume provides more details about my assets in education and work
experience. Furthermore, I would appreciate the opportunity to meet and discuss with you
any questions or concerns about my application, along with any other aspects of my possible
contribution to Chevron. I am available every afternoon at (832) 465-4337, or anytime at
psk5031@psu.edu

Sincerely Yours,
Patrick Krispin

SUBJECT: Job Applications Memo

DATE: 6/6/14

The first job I am applying for is the Gas Trader at Eclipse Resources. The company is
relatively smaller Oil and Gas Company just a few miles from Penn State. Luckily through a
few people in my personal life, I was able to meet the CFO in a casual setting recently. I
thought it was essential to work the angle from the get-go that I had. Some people might see
this as a way of exploiting my personal life in order to advance my professional life.
However, I saw it as a real life example of capturing networking opportunities in order to get
a jumpstart on my life. After that, I looked for a job that would fit me in the company and
saw a couple positions that would be perfect for me. The job advertisement was very clear-
cut in what they wanted in the employee hiring process. Essentially, what they want is a
person to come in with knowledge of Natural Gas Liquids and Crude Oil market trading
who is able to communicate effectively and perform proficiently with Microsoft Office. One
aspect a lot of prospective employees would over-look is the responsibility of
recommendations to improve the business efficiency. When I saw that, I understood the
concept of innovation. Since it is a smaller company, they are looking for employees that are
willing to push the limits in order to improve operations.

When I approached my resume for this company, I found the innovative side of me to be an
important one in my highlights. Due to my lack of experience in the field, I decided it would
be optimal for my resume to use my education first. Also, I included the fact that I was a
player on the Penn State Soccer team as another angle to approach the company. Since
Eclipse is so locally based, I believed it would be a good opportunity to use my former local
presence as a way to get my foot in the door. Since there are a few higher ups in the
company who attended Penn State, it was important for me to try to appeal to their locale
since my education isnt exactly jaw dropping.

When I was looking for my cover letter, I almost immediately mentioned the connection I
had with the CFO of the company. I did this for two reasons. First, to hopefully get some
kind of initial step in the door to make the hiring manager aware that his superior knows
who I am and I am applying. This means there has been some sort of recommendation
leading me to apply for a position at this company. Also, since the company is relatively
smaller, the CFO may be asked about me and could influence the hiring managers decision
in a positive manner. The rest of the cover letter really focuses heavily on my ability to
communicate effectively because the position calls for a strong connection between third
party partners in the trading of Gas Liquids.

I find that my application altogether for the job at Eclipse Resources was one that was
unique and very important to understand for anyone applying to a developing company in a
small town like State College. Through the description of who I am as a student and
professional, I was able to hint and blatantly state certain things that hiring managers at a
large company wouldnt understand about me. This local aspect made the writing easily able
to appeal to the audiences Pathos, while maintaining the logical format of what a resume
and cover letter are used for.

For my second job application, I went with an Earth Science position in Argentina for
Chevron. On Chevrons career search website, you can look into whatever country you
would like to work in and I chose Argentina because I had been there before and lived in
Venezuela for 5 years during my adolescence. Also, I remember my dad telling me about
some really great projects happening in Argentina that most of the world overlook. I love
the idea of being in a Spanish speaking country later on in life as well because it has a certain
passion and lust for life that has always appealed to me.

In my resume, I put my work experience first in order to promote the fact that I can easily
communicate with other people on a team project. In my job in Austin, I worked in a fast-
paced environment with many Spanish speakers. Since I grew up with a bilingual father, this
put me at an advantage in many ways because I was called in to translate for people visiting
from most places south of our border. This leads to an attractive quality for he hiring
manager because he really cant have someone come in to the fields dealing with the lower-
level workers who cant understand what they are saying. My education piece in this resume
also included the fact that I was playing soccer for the mens Varsity soccer team here at
PSU because it is important to know what kind of a culture I was going into. These of
course arent directly affecting my professional ability in any way but can really pull at the
hiring managers pathos as well. It is important for me to work any angle I can since my
GPA hasnt been too high.

In my cover letter I was able to explain a lot of my experience in travel to the country and
what that has given me on a variety of levels. Also, the ability to communicate about certain
things not entirely professionally from a far may have proven to be something a hiring
manager may need since these resumes are accepted from all over the world at any time. I
took the audience members possible feelings into consideration at this point.

I found after analyzing my entire job application to the Chevron Argentina job that my
ability to communicate with others in a bilingual setting could truly be a helpful part of my
employment and aid in my ability to work there. It was important for me in this application
to take the focus off my education because my GPA isnt very high. The other reason I did
this is because I considered who my audience would be along with my competition. This
position surely has a myriad of quality students applying from all over the world and the
hiring worker may be looking first and foremost for the GPA. This shows to be very
different from the other application where I could get a foot in and be able to chat with
people who work there already. In the Chevron case, it would be extremely difficult for me
to show them my attractive personal qualities as opposed to a quantitative requirement.

These two applications proved to be quite different and proposed interesting problems, but
I enjoyed being able to analyze my different documents and tweak them in order to appeal
to different aspects of what hiring managers are looking for in different job applications.
