The Heartbeat of Green Country

The past couple of months have really given us a lot of perspective on
how proud we can be about a magazine such as The Pulse, but what
makes us even happier is when we get a call from someone just to gush.
So many folks assume that print media is a dead industry. Dont get the
tombstone and shovel out just yet.
A call came a few weeks ago from a man named Brad from St. Louis
who was here with his family for a five-day break from his stress-filled
life, only to arrive to a rainy mess. On their first night in Grove, the
family went to the TV for info on what might be going on in these parts
but everyone sitting around the bed in a hotel room seemed wrong.
Many commercials had no contact info so they had no idea on how to
get in touch with the organizers and they had no idea on where some of
the places were. His kids pulled out their smart phones but their signals
werent strong enough with the rain to search via the internet. Frustrated
and annoyed, they were all in bed by 10 pm. Early the next day; the
whole clan had decided it might have been a bad idea to come to
Green Country after all (NOOOOOO!!!). They went to a local diner for
breakfast and he was resigned to the idea that this vacation was over
already. Two of his children had made a long trek from New York so it
was long faces all around the table.
Brad went to Reasors to grab some provisions for the trip, hoping to get
back to St. Louis by nightfall and salvage their vacation with a few day
trips. On a whim, he grabbed The Pulse (well, three copies) and they all
sat down for a second cup of coffee and made their plans for the next
four days. Needless to say, this gentleman made MY day - he was so
happy to not lose his hotel rooms, deposits, gas money and find plenty
to do while in the area - with contact info. And no need for a long sit in
front of a TV.
Brad and his clan went to the Creek Casino in Muskogee for an evening
of gambling and food and he said it was time and money well spent
they dont gamble as a rule, but it was ladies night and his wife and
daughters had a blast (and apparently walked out a little richer).
They spend the next day in Tulsa puttering about, the third day, they
checked out some of the activities we wrote about where they spent
their windfall on food and goodies and the last two days were spent
on Grand Lake (the sun finally came out) where they used their Pulse
knowledge (his words not mine) to have a wonderful getaway.
Talking to people who come here from elsewhere got me thinking
that we have so much to offer folks from out of state, but unless they
know where to look, the information is useless. We cannot assume that
everyone knows what to do and where to go. If we want to make Green
Country a special destination, it will take communication and trying new
ways to get the word out. This area is so special. It would be a shame to
ignore our little spot in the world. The choice is ours.
Happy Independence Day Green Country.

Lake Eufaula: While not a lot of events to speak of, Lake

Eufaula is where you go to get away from the rat race, not
go toward it. Plenty of boats, cabins and more for rent,
along with plenty of spots in Eufaula town to grab food
and supplies. Check out www.lakeeufaula.net for more.
Eufaula has one big deal coming up in July that deserves
a lot of attention: the annual Whole Hawg Days July 2426 and no matter who you are, what your ride, you are
welcome to come on down and get your feet wet while you
try for some serious cash. The Eufaula Chamber makes this
a fun weekend with food, arts and crafts, entertainment

Illinois River: Known for the wonderful float trips, the

Illinois is an Oklahoma landmark. Many come for a day, a

weekend or even longer, just to enjoy all that makes this a
one-of-a-kind destination. With all the rains weve had, the
Illinois is ready for a summer of floaters.
Something to note: floating is permissible despite the recent
rains. Youd do well to use rafts instead of canoes and once
the water crests above 5 feet 6 inches, the various rules for
what you can and cannot do go into effect. If you arent a
strong swimmer, take precautions. The Oklahoma Scenic
Rivers Commission keeps an eye on these things (and they
have plenty of info), so before you go, check in with them

Wagoner wonders for summer

WAGONER COUNTY

Going to Porter, gonna find myself some PEACHES. Yep. Its that
time of year when the peaches are pretty, the events are exciting
and Porter is just a-poppin with both.
Its that special time of year when the tiny little town of Porter
makes its presence known and the Porter Peach Festival is felt far
and wide. This years Festival, scheduled for July 17-19, is the
real deal tribute to those delectable fruits that are all Oklahoma
and with all they have to entertain, educate, enlighten and
eat, you wont want to miss it this year. Porter peaches will be
particularly precious and primed for the picking, so the darling
folks of Porter have festivalized a weekend in honor of all things
peachy in life. How can we miss?

its gone, its gone, so save your place in line early and you wont
be disappointed. While you are there, get some local peaches, a
Peach Festival Cookbook and peruse the recipe contest to see who
has the best cobbler, dessert or preserves.
What more can you hope for? A weekend of fun in the sun
in Porter celebrating all things peachy. Cant ask for more
than that. Get more information from their Website at www.
porterpeachfestivals.com or give a call to (918) 694-9314 if you
need more information.

It starts with the Peach Classic 5K Run, an antique tractor pull,

a car, truck and motorcycle show and plenty of live musical
entertainment but if you think you have the ability to entertain,
they have place in the spotlight for you too, so check out their
Website at www.porterpeachfestivals.com for info on how to get
in the limelight (or is it the peachlight?).
What everyone always wants to know about is the free. And
Porter has it in spades with free peaches and ice cream, but once

ROGERS COUNTY

Rogers

Lets get ready to Rrrrrrrrrrrrumble

in Rogers County
by: Jennifer Jones

Rogers County, namely Claremore, has usually got a bit of fun

slated for your summer days and nights, and while they really
went over the top with the Big Cats in June, they didnt slack off
for July, in fact, some of their July fun might be worth the trip
back.

We of course, start with their Fourth for July Celebration going

on July 4 at Claremore Lake Park where you park at Will Rogers
Stampede Arena, then catch a Pelivan ride to the Lake starting at
6 pm. Live entertainment, food, kids fun and topping it off with
fireworks at 9:40 pm (or at dark) make a pleasurable evening.
We cant forget to tell you that also on July 4, you can get the
kids out for a spot of fishing at Claremore Lake Park kicking off at
7 am. The first 400 kids get a free fishing pole, so what have you
got to lose? So get over to E. Blue Starr Drive with the little ones
for a morning of fishing fun then putter around Claremore until 6
pm when the evening festivities and fireworks make your Fourth a
memorable one. If you need more about the fishing, contact (918)
342-2522.

Page 8 - July 2014 - The Pulse

On July 11, a band that is a local phenom, Asleep at the Wheel,

will be at Will Rogers Downs for one night only. Get a little food,
a little gaming, then check them out. Will Rogers Downs is located
just east of downtown Claremore on Hwy 20. Cant miss it.
OOOOH, we found a good un - the Scissortail Wine Festival
at the Claremore Expo Center is gonna make it a great un July
19. One of the biggest in the state, they have all kinds of wines,
coffees, art, a car show and plenty of delectable foods. Ten of
Oklahomas finest wineries will be ready to tickle your palate (or
pickle it?), so if you plan on sampling your way through, bring a
DD. More at www.visitclaremore.org or
(918) 342-5357.

We have more Tulsa events listed in our calendar, but there are a
few that really got our attention for July and we had to give you
more than a calendar byte. Many of these events are indoors, so
if you are an air-conditioned gypsy, they got you covered (and
cool). Others cool you from the inside out, so it all sounds pretty
good to us.
Dont forget that Wicked is still going on at Tulsas PAC until July
6. More at www.tulsapac.com. Its a wicked good time too.
Affair of the Heart is happening July 11-13 at the Expo Center
and while its not cheap to get in, it might be the last place you
need to go to think Christmas. Tickets are $7 for all three days
and kids 12 and under can get in for free, but if you want to
get your hands on some pretty stupendous crafts, then you need
to see what they have to offer. Check out their Website: www.
heartoftulsa.com and see who will be there. Theres none of that
dollar store resale stuff; just pretties as far as the eye can see, so
grab your walking shoes and get shopping. Find out answers to
specific questions at (800) 755-5488.

Oooh, Cox Business Center has something for all you cosplayers,
comic book addicts and gamers: Tokyo in Tulsa: Worlds Collide is
all the rage also July 11-13, so make some time for that too. More
at www.tokyointulsa.com or call (918) 850-1025. Pre-registration
highly recommended but worth it.

TULSA COUNTY

Tulsa

Tulsa keeps it trendy despite the

heat

Broken Arrow cools you from the inside out with Taste of Summer
at Central Park on July 19. More than sweets, they also have food
trucks, a kids zone and local art, but get a couple of scoops of
Blue Bell because it always tastes sweeter when you are heating
up on the outside. (918) 258-5100
July winds out with the Center of the
Universe Festival July 25-26 in the Brady
Arts District and who can complain with
70 bands playing live just for little ol
you? Add in an art market and food, and
theres no reason to miss it. All happens
around Guthrie Green and Cains. www.
centeroftheuniversefestival.com
Okay, if you prefer the quieter things in life, we cant help you
with that because the R.K. Gun Show is at Tulsa Expo Square July
26-27. They make no promises on where to get your ammo but
at least your firearm collection will fill out a bit more. (563) 9278179/www.rkshows.com for more.
The farmers in our area will be tickled with all the horse shows
and topping it all off is the Tulsa County Free Fair July 31-Aug.
1 at the Tulsa Fair Grounds. Free and open to the public, but we
wont keep droning about all theyll have to offer. You know the
drill. Check our Rodeos page for the horse shows in Tulsa.
Keep your eye on August because it kicks off quite nicely with the
Powwow of Champions at ORU Mabee Center Aug. 8-10. Well
have more to say next month, but its worth mentioning now. (918)
378-4494/www.iicot.org if you just cant wait.

That same weekend (July 11-13), the

Rock, Mineral, Fossil & Jewelry Show
makes an appearance at the Expo
Centers Central Park Hall. Plenty of
unique from underground for you to
do something with or finished items
for you to give as special gifts and
complete the rest of your Christmas
shopping in July! Just think: youll be
done with the holidays before the
cool weather is even a consideration!

Cherokee charms for July

CHEROKEE COUNTY

by: Amy Addams

Yep, its getting hot in Cherokee County. Thank God the rains are
still pretty consistent and it appears the heat is going to be a bit
more cooperative this year so we arent slaves to the indoors. It
also means that there are plenty of things to entertain your little
ones (and you) all over the place.

Hulbert welcomes our independence with fireworks July 5 at

Sequoyah State Park. Totally worth it to get a second shot if you
saw some on the Fourth but wanted some more. Its held on the

shores of Lake Fort Gibson, making the sparks really shine off the
water.

River City Players are heating up the stage at the NSU Playhouse
all month with At the Hop and We Love the 80s playing most
weekends with a little Guitars and Cadillacs thrown in for good
measure. Plenty of times and ticket options make these shows
worth a check out. These are hard-working NSU theater students
and they deserve a bit of our time to see their efforts. Check out
their Facebook page for more or get tickets by calling (918) 4582075.

CHEROKEE COUNTY

We cant visit Cherokee County without reminding you that there

are plenty of places to take a floating day trip down the Illinois
River (weekdays are cheaper and seem to be when the rains hold
off). Add to that a new place to go for a nice night of rest and
renewal and youve got a perfect getaway from the everyday.
The Center at Sparrow Hawk Mountain has beautiful (REAL)
hotel rooms for parties of one to twenty along with the necessary
amenities, but the best part is you get a quiet spot to go (complete
with air conditioning: BIG plus) that is only a hop, skip and a jump
from the river without the insanity of the camping (partying) crowd

or having to drive half an hour

to a hotel (did we mention the
affordability factor?). Perfect
for families that just want to
have access to a hot private
shower, coffee in the morning
and some good times away from
the party atmosphere in the
camp grounds, you cant lose.
Find out more by calling (918)
431-1245 or check it all out at
www.sparrowhawkmountain.org.
Take the older folks along and
let them commune with nature
or go fishing while you get your
wet on. Theyve got all you need
to make for a perfect family
gathering and a getaway from the insanity of the big city. While
you are there, take a look at all they have to offer the weary
traveler along with their ability to host weddings, retreats, family
reunions and more. We paid them a little visit, and all we can say
is WOW.

Delaware
Delaware Doins

DELAWARE COUNTY

by: Jennifer Jones

We always get blindsided by Delaware County in the summer.

They are so quiet all winter long, then BAM, they smack us so hard
in May, and never stop until November. Will we never learn? Well,
it looks like July is chock-a-block full of goins-on for your July trip
into Grove, Jay or any of the little towns that dot the Grand Lake
shores, so get the car packed and get going.
Grove has their fireworks, Jay has theirs, and were not going to
pass judgment on who has the best. Pick both and make sure you
get some fireworks in for your Fourth. Groves are July 3, (918)
786-6107, Duck Creeks (918) 782-3292 and Jays are both
happening July 4, (918) 253-8698 or check out the ones at the
Huckleberry Festival July 5.
Har-Ber Village has a summer to remember with a special July
4. All kinds of family-friendly stuff with lawn games, hand crank
firecracker ice cream (worth it to go just to get your paws on that
alone, me thinks), and a special talk from Thomas Jefferson! Its all
free with your paid admission to Har-Ber Village, so check it out:
www.har-bervillage.com.
Now, lets fill your days. Groves annual Arts, Crafts, Music & Cajun
Festival is going on July 4 at the Grove Civic Center and other
locations all over Grove, but be sure to get a bowl of Cajun food,
check out some down-home Zydeco and enjoy a change from your
usual fare on the Fourth. Guaranteed fun for all. ACMC Festival

runs 9 am 4:30 pm and you can find out the particulars at www.
grandlakefestivals.com or by calling (918) 786-8896. Its free to
attend too; what more enticement do you need? Okay, how about
Janna Jae there pickin away? One note from her and youll park
yourself to hear her play all day. That woman has the gift.
Then get heck-bent for huckleberries with the Huckleberry Festival
in Jay July 5. They have so much lined-up, we cant list all of the
activities here, but if you go to www.jaychamber.org, you can look
at the list that never ends or call (918) 253-8698 if you prefer.
We will say that it starts with huckleberry pancakes at 7 am and
ends at 10 pm with fireworks, so get a good nights sleep the night
before.
Okay, we have to give you a
heads-up about something at
Har-Ber Village Museum on
August 9 because we feel its
going to be worth your time and
attention. They are sponsoring
an Ecology and Environment
Day where you can learn about
the great outdoors and our
place in their world. Give the
Museum a call for details at
(918) 786-6446.

Ottawa

Ottawa revs up the events

OTTAWA COUNTY

by: Jennifer Jones

This July, while Ottawa hasnt planned a lot of events, they did set
up some nice ones that provide any visitor just the right amount of
change from the usual set of things to do that no one will leave
feeling let down. Be sure to give them a try-

We start with the Annual Quapaw Tribal Powwow July 3-6 in

Quapaw, Oklahoma at 5681 S. 630 Road. Cultural dancing,
costumes, food and plenty of vendors make this a sure bet for
anyone who wants a nice getaway. Its all family-friendly and the
costumes are pretty enough to make you want to attend. Add to
that this is the oldest Powwow in the U.S. 142 years in existence,
so you know you get some bragging rights just for being there.
Get more by checking in with www.quapawtribe.com or call (918)
542-1853 for extra info.
Miami is celebrating the Fourth with a Fourth of July Fireworks
Celebration on July 4 (conveniently), so if you can get to Riverview

Page 12 - July 2014 - The Pulse

Park, you can get yourself some great firework views. (918) 5424481
Also on July 4, the Miami BMX Fireworks Race is also being held
at Riverview Park. Gives you a great day of BMX crazy and
fireworks to top it all off. Sign-up if you think youve got the
oomph. More at (918) 541-0269.
We cant leave Ottawa or July without reminding you about the
Cruise night at Waylans Ku-Ku Burger July 26, and as they do
every month, its all about the gear head. Music, door prizes,
dash plaques, trophies and plenty of family fun make this a great
place for the car nut or car nut in training to let their hair down.
The Rebels Car Club are the sponsors and they do a great job
of organizing this event every month, so check in with them if you
need more: (918) 542-9696. Waylans is located on Historic
Route 66 in Miami. Cant miss it.

Theres gonna be a big fuss for all the free fair activity in Green
Country come September, but some fair aficionados planned a bit,
Craig County was home to one of them. Its bigger, its badder,
its the annual Craig County Free Fair happening July 21-28
at the Craig County Fairgrounds in Vinita and you just cant go
wrong.

that the rodeos are a big draw and the folks in Craig County are
serious about the R word. If you consider yourself a fan, maybe
you should go and see what all the fuss is about. Want to know
more? Then give a call to (918) 256-7133 and ask questions. It
also makes for a good start for your overall fair-ness coming later
in the year - and we could all use a little more fair in our lives.

CRAIG COUNTY

Craig

Craig Countys free fair is fun for

all

With all the exhibits, kids

fun and activities, livestock
and entertainment, the Craig
County Free Fair has an
added claim to fame that it is
one of the oldest in the great
state of Oklahoma. But the
fun doesnt stop there they
also have arts and crafts,
plenty of food your doctor
probably wouldnt suggest
you eat, baked goods to
take with you, a dog show
(how cute is that?), antique
tractor pull and shooting
exhibitions, but many come
for the rodeos. Weve heard

Nowata

Nowata knows turkey

Nowata keeps pretty quiet much of the year; as a matter of fact,

we really have to stretch a bit to find things for folks to do there,
but we figure they like it that way. BUT, every year, on July
4, the little town of Nowata gets a bit wild and this year, you
gotta see it to believe it.
Were talking about the Independence Day Wild Turkey Fest
and Fourth of July Celebration happening in Jack Gordon
Park in Nowata on July 4 all day and into the night. They have
all kinds of family fun that doesnt make you nervous that
the kiddos will be introduced to something scary or beyond
their age group. Theyll have turtle races, a watermelon feed,
games, a silent auction, live music and plenty of good old,
down-home food that sticks to your ribs. None of that green
salad stuff here. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy more music
and fireworks at dusk to make your day complete, but make
sure you get your paws on a burger, dog and a big old scoop
of ice cream while you enjoy the show.

MUSKOGEE COUNTY

Muskogee

Muskogees puttin on the ritz for

all the right reasons
by: Amy Addams

There are plenty of things to do that dont require use of a

planner in Muskogee this July; things like checking out Honor
Heights Park, the community pool and of course a day at the mall
can cure whatever heat is sending us back indoors, but there are
a couple of events that are sure to encourage your love of good
times.
ICTC is hosting the Womens Leadership Conference July 9 and
its the perfect place for women to enhance their leadership or
business skills. More than you could hope for in one day but worth
the time to attend. (918) 682-2401.

July 12 has not one but two events that are not only good for
your body but also good for your soul. The Annual Port to Fort
Adventure Race is happening at three Forks Harbor, so if you
have two friends that do their parts, or if you are just that tough,
then give it a shot. www.port-to-fort.com for more.

year, along with where to get it in Arrowhead Mall. Affordable,

close and okay for us
commoners, so we can
throw that bikini in the
back of the closet for
another year. Best part
is that they encourage
audience participation
with the winning teacher
getting all the money in
the fountain for his or her
school. It all happens on
July 26 at noon, so grab
your coffee and pastry
(no one will look down
on you for snacking) and
cast your vote. While you
are there, see what all
the schools have planned
for the coming year. www.arrowheadmallmuskogee.com

The USS Batfish is also looking for love on July 12 with a Batfish
Benefit where you can experience living history from WWII
survivors. They are also hosting a one-day-only Weasel military
landing right on the Batfish. (918) 682-6294
The weekend of July 19 is all about the fishing with the Extreme
Fishing League Tourney at Three Forks for two days only. We dont
think much more needs to be said, except get that fishing pole out
and get ready to do some extreme catching.
Okay, the big daddy of them all is also happening at the end
of July; the Back to School Fashion Show is NOT a bunch of
starving models looking down on us mortals, its a bunch of local
teachers who are showing us everyday folks whats new for this

Envision. Experience. Excel.

If you still havent seen whats up at Creek Casino in Muskogee,

well were here to tell you that folks from other states have beaten
you to the punch and they all had wonderful things to say about
the revamped little gambling spot in Muskogee.
Housing the only gaming tables in a 55 mile radius, you can count
on the VIP treatment even if you show up in your everyday car
because they have FREE valet parking as well as a non-smoking
section for your comfort. BUT what REALLY gets our attention is
that they have all youll need for a nice (cool) evening out without
having to battle the Tulsa traffic or spending long amounts of time
driving around to be fed then entertained. The Rock Creek Grille
is some dang tasty tidbits for your tummy and then you only have
to walk a few steps to have a date night that youll talk about for
weeks after.
Even if all that doesnt excite you, how about the fact that they
are serious about their air conditioning? We LOVE a cool spot this
time of year and Creek Nation Casino doesnt skimp on the cool.
Wear your formal wear and pretty up knowing that youll look
and feel impressive the whole time youre there. Huzzah!

The Cooper Dog Park is hosting a Flea Market Fundraiser July 19,

as of the date of this writing, so if you have some things to sell,
you might wanna give it a shot. If you are looking for a fun way

animals, its a date you cant miss. Rescuers, dog groomers and lots
of food make it a great place to peruse. You might go home with

Thanks to ranchers, cattlemen, farmers and ranch hands, we live

in a country where food is not a luxury but we take it all for
granted. Its time we thanked the people who make our country
the great place it is and the people in Pawhuska have done just
that. Its time for the Cattlemens Ranch Tour, Ben Johnson Steer
Roping and Cavalcade Street Dance in Pawhuska all dedicated to
the hands that make this country great.

and make a vacation of it. Folks from all over come to show what
theyre made of and its all about the raw skill. Make your second
day rock with the Cavalcade Street Dance on July 15. Cowboy
hats and boots not required, but they are pretty much expected.
Just sayin
Sweetening the pot will be live music from national stars and some
regional favorites, but a big draw is the street dance in downtown
Pawhuska where you can do some serious boot scootin or just
wear your prettiest boots, hat and spurs and be seen. Call (918)

the street dance and check out www.pawhuskachamber.com or

From July 14-20, The Osage County Cattlemens Association has

a bit of hoedown at the Osage County Fairgrounds where anyone
in the cattle biz can come for a break to enjoy an informative
three-day session of learning, with rodeos and dancing to top
it all off. The last two days are rodeo nirvana. It is the worlds

Pawnee

Pawnee is celebrating Freedom in

all kinds of ways
by: Dakota Jones

We gave you a heads up on the Pawnee Indian National

Veterans Powwow July 3-6 in our June issue, but now its time we
told you more.

This Powwow is a community event that honors our local veterans

and American Indian culture. Held Thursday-Sunday with Indian
dance contests, heritage programs, a parade July 5 at noon in
downtown Pawnee and plenty of tribute to our heroes of war,
it all started to honor returning WWI veterans and theyve
kept the tradition alive ever since. If you are celebrating your
independence, these are the men and women to thank for it.
Plenty of activities are scheduled for the entire four days to keep
your family interested and part of the festivities. The party will be
held at Park Lane and Memorial Road in Pawnee (new location). If
you need more information, call (918) 873-0499.
Dont forget about the fun planned for Pawnee all day July 4 at
Courthouse Square. The turtles will be fast and the track will be
smokin. Dont run off before the fireworks at 10 pm that night!
Give Pawnee Chamber a call at (918) 762-2108 for more info.

Okmulgee
Okmulgees horsin around

Okmulgee is ready to rodeo in July and while we tried to find out

if the Jim Shoulders Rodeo was happening, we couldnt get into
their website, so if you are a big fan of Mr. Shoulders, be sure to
look it up at www.henryetta.org.
There is another big D, but its in a little town that keeps quiet
for most of the year. The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival (AKA:
Woodyfest) is going on July 9-13 in Okemah. If you are a fan of
Oklahomas favorite folkie, then make time to spend more than
one day as you can expect lots of good musicians to be there
to show our local folk hero plenty of love. Get all you need on
the line-up and other activities at www.woodyguthrie.com or call
(918) 623-2440.

Before we duck out of Okmulgee, dont forget about the fireworks

at Harmon Stadium July 4. We hear they put on quite the show
and many come from quite a distance to see the pretty colors. It
all starts at dusk. Get there early for a good seat and parking
spot.
Now, we jump forward a bunch of days into August, Aug. 8-9
to be exact, where the Okmulgee Invitational Rodeo & Festival
happens at Bob Arrington Arena, just off Hwy 75 on the north
end. Home to the nations oldest African-American Rodeo, this is
a BIG one. Plenty of national attention makes this a hot ticket if
you call yourself a rodeo-goer, as African-Americans were the
first cowboys, so they are due the respect this event garners. Want
more? Call (918) 756-0761 for more. Dont forget the extras a
festival and parade are also happening, so stick around. Well
have more to say about this one in August too.

OKMULGEE COUNTY

by: Dakota Jones

Stick around some more for August and September in Okmulgee

about to surface and you wont want to miss out. Well have them
right here but youll have to wait until next month for the surprises
in store.

Sequoyah

Sequoyahs spectacular surprises

Yeah, we still have some of the much coveted Fin & Feather buffet
passes and we promise to make short work of them this month, so
keep Liking and Sharing on Facebook and well keep doling them
out. I got two words for you: Chocolate Gravy.

If you want some cute in your life but dont know where to look for
it, Fin & Feather has that covered with their parade the morning
of July 4; theres all kinds of mis-mash of scooters, tractors, bikes,
tricycles, cars, pets, pick your whatever, taking a stroll on Highway
10A but its a parade all decked out in red, white and blue and
its too cute for words. You might be ruined for cute for the rest of
your life, but itll be worth it. Grab a cup of Soda Steves Special
Blend java, your lawn chair and hang out to see the cutest parade
around. www.finandfeatherresort.com (we used cute a lot, huh?)
The Sallisaw Lions Club is gearing up for their IPRA Rodeo July
31-Aug. 2 at the Sallisaw Lions Club Arena (makes sense) where
over 5,000 people show up every year for this big deal rodeo.
This isnt one of those out-of-the-box rodeos either. Plenty of
things you didnt see coming will have you biting your nails and

squirming in your seat. Youll

cover your eyes a time or
two, but thats what its all
about! Theres plenty of
street dancing, clowning
around and the announcers

whats going on the whole
time, but what has us real
curious is the wild cow milking
sounds like a job deserving
hazard pay, but it got our

Eufaulas July of hawgs, poker, and

rodeo
by: Trent McDaniel

We all know Eufaula is a vacationers paradise. People come

from all over the region to spend time along the shores of Lake
Eufaula and it only takes one look out onto the beautiful lake and
you have no doubt as to what brings folks back year after year.
One bite of food from a local restaurant and youve already
committed yourself for next year too- so dont tell us that we
didnt warn you.

starts July 24 and runs til the 26 with no stops in the fun. Theres
a carnival, an arts and crafts festival, a parade, and the biggest
draw of all the POKER RUN July 26. With the amount of money
they are giving away, the Poker Run
is a cant-miss. Even if your hand is
garbage, you stand a chance at some
cash. And we mean BIG CASH.

We need to remind you too that the Battle of Honey Springs

Memorial is slated for July 19 and given how many of us have ties
to this areas history, its a perfect way to show your respect for
those who gave their all in one of the most pivotal battles in Civil
War history. Wanna know more? Check in with www.checotah.
com or call (918) 473-2070 for details. Dont run off after the
Memorial; Junes Restaurant and plenty of places to get a couple
antiques to spruce up the homestead abound. Folks there are
really kind so its a good way to fill your day.

On Saturday, July 26, they start with

a healthy breakfast at 7 am, then
they will be showing off the shiny cars,
having plenty of kids activities at the
Library at 10 am and the big deal:
FOOD. With HAWG in the name, theres gonna be some crazy
hawg cookin goin on. Best part is the FREE sandwiches at 5 pm.
Any time theres good food and its free to boot, were all over it.

The rodeo is a big part of the fun, and with three days of
entertainment, how can you miss? Its the Annual Eufaula Rodeo
July 24-26 and since it corresponds to the Whole Hawg Days
excitement, it makes for another reason to hit up the excitement
that is Eufaula. More at (918) 689-8480.
We dont care who you are, what you like or if you dont like

We just cant fit the fun all right here in one place. Its not about
having a boat to get through the Poker Run either. They allow all
kinds of rides to get cards and everyone is allowed to play. The
folks at the Eufaula Chamber have been crammed-up in their
offices all winter planning for this big to-do. Summer is really hot
in Eufaula and while you are there, take a tour of the kitschy little
shops along the Main Street; plenty of yummy foods, gorgeous
clothiers and lots of one-of-a-kinds are to be had for good prices;
all you need to do is be there.

We have to tell you that while it might be hot outside, its a whole

We have to start at Five Civilized Tribes where their show fills out
July quite nicely and we have it on good authority that they have
air conditioning so you can peruse the beauty they are offering

easily and see what they have to show and sell. More at www.

Next, another local show makes a one-day stop at the Grove

covered this in June, but thought it best to remind you again. www.

WORTH THE DRIVE

Woody Guthrie Folk Festival is more than a bunch of hippie types

hanging out, listening to the crooner from days gone by. Woodie
Guthrie is a national legend. And if you walk through the cars,
youll see the evidence of how far his reach is when you look at
all the out of state license plates. We have it on good authority
that this year will be really special because the prodigal son, Arlo
is coming to Guthrie to celebrate dads legacy and career. How
cool is THAT?!? Happening July 9-13 all over Okemah. (918) 6232440/www.woodieguthrie.com

then why not see them all? OCTAFest is happening in Duncan July

make for some lively entertainment. (405) 252-0317/www.

but instead, were just gonna give you a rundown: blackberries
in McLoud July 4-5, huckleberries in Jay July 5, peaches in Porter
July 17-19 and Stratford on July 19 and watermelons in Valliant
July 25-26 and Rush Springs Aug. 9. All of these fests are more
than fruit; they are good times, so you gotta try at least one.

delights.
Hey, Mon, do you live for the soulful sounds of Reggae? Not
just a musical genre, Reggae is a way of life. While its not for
everybody, it makes for an enlightening time and wonderful
Caribbean food. Free to attend and a perfect way to say
goodbye to summer in the Bricktown Arts District in OKC.
Happening Aug. 1-2, all are welcome and its family-friendly too.

How about something a little harder? If you have your black
eyeliner tucked away for a special evening out on the town, why
not pull it out and get your metal music fix at the Mayhem Festival
at the OKC Downtown Airpark Aug. 7? An all-day festival of
heavy metal, big hair and fishnets. Leave the kids with Grannie,
because this is for the big kids. Find your inner metal head and
get to banging it. Avenged Sevenfold, KORN, Cannibal Corpse,
Suicide Silence, Trivium and many more bands make this a great
date night for your inner Goth to come out and play. Four stages,
all day loud and some great line-ups make it a big deal. IF you
like that kind of thing. Rock on! More at www.wheresthemusic.net.

Songs of Summer

Its summer in Oklahoma, and the temperatures are soaring. While

some of us wilt like lilies in the blazing sun, others revel in the
Sooner State sauna. Whatever your temperament, there are tunes
to match it.

If youre seeking an escape

from the weather, there
are plenty of great indoor
music options this month.
The Brady Theater in
downtown Tulsa welcomes
Old Crow Medicine Show
to town July 10. OCMS will Old Crow Medicine Show
be touring in support of its
new release, Remedy. The
group had a huge hit with
Wagon Wheel, which
was released in 2004. The
song was co-written by
Dale Watson & The Lonestars
OCMS lead vocalist, Ketch photo: Redhouse Records
Secor. Bob Dylan penned
the original snippet of a tune decades earlier. The two share
writing credits on the song. Remedy includes another song cowritten with Dylan, Sweet Amarillo. Dale Watson, a retro-cool
country crooner, will open the show. Alternative metal band,
Chevelle, takes the stage July 22, followed by the legendary
Steely Dan on July 23. Finishing out the month at the Old Lady on
Brady is American Idol Live July 30.
As always, the historic Cains Ballroom on North Main in Tulsa has
a little something for everyone. British DJ, Zomboy, aka Joshua
Jenkin brings his Outbreak Tour to town July 9. This giant dance
party for EDM lovers will bring down the house, or perhaps, simply
raise the dead. Western swing fans have two chances to pound
the wooden dance floor, once with the Tulsa Playboy July 10, and
again with The Round Up Boys on July 20. Cains regular, rapper
Tech N9ne returns July 12, and Texas country singer songwriter
Aaron Watson plays August 1. More information can be found at
www.cainsballroom.com.

www.mypulsemag.com

Over at Tulsas BOK Center, Motley Crue rocks on July 13. Better
yet, the band has the amazing Alice Cooper on tour with them as
support. Schools out for Summer, and the addition of Cooper to
this bill is the best way to celebrate. Looking ahead for something
completely different, Grammy award-winning crooner, Michael
Buble, returns August 1. For all of the BOK events, see www.bokcenter.com.

GOING OUT - MUSIC

For those willing to embrace the heat, the big ticket this month is
the second Center of the Universe Festival in Tulsas Brady Arts
District. Stepping in to fill the hole left by D-fest, CouFest brings
some cutting edge musical acts to Guthrie Green and to the
festival main stage July 25 & 26. Headliners include
AWOLNATION, Young the Giant, Fitz and the Tantrums and
Twenty One Pilots. Catch the party of Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty
Band, Clear Plastic Masks, Greensky Bluegrass and more on the
Guthrie Green Stage. Theres even an Oklahoma Stage with
performances from talented Okie artists like Fiawna Forte, Taddy
Porter and Paul Benjaman Band. For a complete line up and ticket
information, visit www.centeroftheuniversefestival.com.

Motley Crue
Dont forget the great shows at Tulsas Performing Arts Center.
Straight from Broadway, Wicked continues through July 6 in the
Chapman Music Hall. This inverted fairy tale is hugely popular
and very entertaining. Mischievous Swing pays tribute to gypsy
jazz greats like Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli July
12-13. The quartet features Tulsas own world-class talent, Shelby
Eicher, as well as his sons Nathan and Isaac, along with Ivan Pena.
Beatles fans cant miss 1964: The Tribute on July 25. Visit www.
tulsapac.com for a full listing of shows.
Tulsas Hard Rock Casino is
not only a great place to
try your luck, and maybe
come home a winner (or
at least break even); its
also home to some of the
hottest tickets in town. The
Counting Crows
Joint in the casino is a
state-of-the-art venue that hosts major touring acts. July 17, classic
rock band Boston will play hits spanning its almost four
decade-long career. Looking to next month, 90s alternative rock
band, Counting Crows, kicks things off August 1. Go to
www.hardrockcasinotulsa.com for tickets and information.
Over at the Event Center at The Riverspirit Casino, near 83rd &
Riverside, Bowzers Rock N Roll Party will be playing the hits from
the 50s and early 60s. Led by Jon Bowzer Bauman, former
front man for the band Sha Na Na, the show is sure to be a nostalgic evening featuring some of early rocks greatest melodies.

Writer/director Luc Besson, (La Femme Nikita and The Fifth

female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs
Scarlett Johansson in Lucy. Set in a world that is run by the mob,
street gangs, drug addicts, and corrupt cops Lucy, a woman
living in Taipei, Taiwan, is
forced to work as a drug

makes for a joyful July

Of course, July starts with the last few days of Wicked at the
Tulsa PAC, but things get sweeter from there. Of course, other
theatres in Green Country also have some events that make for a
great family night on the town.

Rasa makes a two-day stop July 11-12 and is a perfect way

to understand how love and happiness makes us do better in all
aspects of our lives. Lots of dancing and Indian Bollywood gives
your family a bit of culture as well. Top your evening off with a
bit of Indian food and make the experience complete. On July 13,
get a bit more culture at 13 where Evan Goldman attempts to

Bartlesville makes for a great night of entertainment with Peter

Tink and Captain Hook, its captivating and exciting for kids of all
ages. More at www.cmtonstage.com.
Picture in Scripture has a bit of religion for those who are losing
their way with The Man Who Ran July 18-19 and July 25-26.
Its all about Jonah who was swallowed by a giant fish when he
is thrown overboard after running from Gods calling. Its a great
story no matter how you see The Bible and it can help you find

night, family get away or just a night to get out and feel more
connected to God. (918) 435-8207/www.pictureinscripture.com

Wicked tells the pre-story to The Wizard of Oz when the

witches were young and happy; before the insanity of life made
them who we see in Oz lore. This is an adults show, but there is
nothing I recall from seeing it years ago that makes me think it
will be offensive to little ones. Its won all sorts of awards and
the music is quite powerful. PAC is offering a lottery for tickets at
$25 cash if you are willing to show and pay up at the door. Its a
limited time offer with only a few tickets at 2/person, so why not
take a shot at being a winner? Wicked runs through July 6.
While not really theatre, Experience Tulsa is all about the art
and culture of Tulsa running until July 11. Its a great way to know

Mob Mentality might be good for that tween or teen that cant
seem to think for themselves on July 18-20. A perfect way to show
how the dynamic of mob mentality or groupthink makes people
do things they normally wouldnt. Plenty of dance, music and
laughs make it a non-preachy way to get kids to see themselves and others - with new eyes.

Back to school isnt far away

It seems like summer is just flying by; with the
cooler temps and rain, it almost feels like weve
lost some of the crazy heat, but it also feels
like every year August gets here sooner than we
anticipated and next thing you know its time to
get back to the business of schooling. Starting
now is a great way to get ahead for back to the
classroom. Were going to help you get going -

PULSE PRO - BACK TO SCHOOL

Now is a perfect time to take stock of what

your kids have and need as well as start the
shopping process so you can see whats out
there and who has the best deals. Its also a
great time to take stock of how your child is
behaving. If the talk of back to school has
your child in a state of panic, it might be a
good time to find out whats going on. Are they
having learning issues? Are they being bullied?
Is it something else? Now is that time to get
the help your child needs to make this year less
painful. Its also the biggest time of year parents
decide on home schooling. We are not advocating
or dismissing home schooling, but if you have
the resources and education to take matters into
your own hands, you may want to see what
youll need to home school. If you didnt do well
in school but feel that this is the best option
for your child, youll need to research online
for resources to keep your child
on the right path. If you dont
have enough hours in your day
already, home schooling might
not be an option for you, but
if you feel as though you
have what it takes, now is
the time to do a practice

and evenings are great times to sit on the back

porch and read together. Even 15 minutes a day
can go a long way to improving your childs
reading comprehension and you can see how
they are doing without that whole, Mo-ommm
response. Making sure your child is on grade
level is really important to their feelings about
school, so a little effort on your part can go far.
Be sure to not make it feel like a punishment,
so let them pick books they like, not what you
want. Excitement about the material can go a
long way to making sure your child wants to
learn. Your local librarian can help you choose
materials that are age appropriate. While you are
there, see what your local library has for you to
help with other subjects.
This is also the right time to get things like
immunizations, hearing, vision and dental issues
checked as well as issues such as ADD/ADHD
and dyslexia. Dont wait until everyone else is
doing the same thing. Early detection can go a
long way to finding the right cure.
Technology can be used for good: today, it seems
like every kid in America has some form of
technology. PlayStations, X-Boxes, smart phones,
tablet computers are all part of our everyday

Back to school means more

than clothes and shoes.
Many parents let their
kids go all summer without
opening a book or refreshing
their math skills. This makes
the new school year that
much harder. Now is a
perfect time to do refresher
drills so your kid walks
back into school feeling
like they can handle
the new material. Your

lives. No matter how much or how little you

have lying around the house, there is a company
that makes educational software to help your
child to learn. Dont feel bad if you have to
take the gaming systems away right now either.
If your child spends more than two hours per
day on a gaming system in summer, its time
to make changes. Its always easier to make
gradual changes early than make them later.
Which leads us to the next thing.

Buy a little at a time. This time of year can be

as financially stressful as Christmas for many
parents, especially if you have a large family.
It doesnt have to be that way. Start buying
the generic supplies all the kids will need like
pens, pencils, binders, paper each time you go
to the store. A little at a time can go a long
way to easing the burden. Also: shop with a
list so you dont end up with too much of one
thing. Some stores are already starting their
sales with the super cheap supplies to get you
in the door. Take advantage of these sales and
keep more money in your pocket. If you are still
sweating the list, check with the administration
at your school for some help. There are plenty
of programs to help you get what you need,
including lunches.

PULSE PRO - BACK TO SCHOOL

Schedules: Yep, lots of kids are staying up

later and sleeping away half the day this time
of year. Not good. Most children need at least
nine hours of sleep per night and a year-round
schedule is much easier to work with than
letting them do nothing all summer and trying to
get it back the day before school starts. If you
are not living by a schedule, you might have a
harder time making them adhere to one too, so
everyone wins.

Is home schooling the right choice? As we said

previously, we arent advocating one way or the
other. If you are unsure of what you want to
do, now is a great time to see if you and your
child should be doing this. Consider it a trial run
and you can see what issues need addressing.
If your child has learning problems (or you
do), homeschooling might be a bad idea. If your
child wants to play sports or be involved in
extracurricular activities, home schooling might
not be the best thing either. Its a big decision
for both of you, so you both have to do your
homework before you decide:

summer
SAFETY

Its a hot time of year in Oklahoma - in all the ways you can imagine. Were so
fortunate to have the waterways, resorts and fun things to do and its sometimes hard
to believe that people come from all over the country just to hang out with us. The one
thing we want to remember is that this time of year also means a higher risk of things
that can hurt us. That doesnt mean we have to stay indoors, however, it just means we
have to be a little careful. We arent trying to be a downer; we only want what you want:
everyone to come out on the other side of summer happy, healthy and alive.

HEALTH - SUMMER SAFTEY

Drinking too much: we arent talking about hydration, were

talking about too much alcohol. When you are out in the heat,
you need to drink more, but alcohol is like caffeine: you tend to
drink more to hydrate not realizing you are going to get drunk
faster. Boating and drinking is just as dangerous as driving your
car drunk, so if you plan to indulge, let someone else be the
captain. Binge drinking is defined as five or more drinks in a
two-hour period (four for women) and the biggest offenders are
higher-earning males between 18 and 34. People who drink
too much in celebration of a holiday often have a much higher
incidence of drowning, high blood pressure, family violence and
unintended pregnancy. Not what you wanted? Then slow down
on the booze.
Food Safety: its so easy to forget that the biggest problem
of summer fun is food. Unsafe grilling, salads made with
perishable ingredients and cross contamination are the big
offenders. When you are grilling, make sure you cook your
meat thoroughly. Chicken and pork are really dangerous when
you dont get that internal temperature to 160 degrees and
placing cooked meat on the plate you used for the raw meat

Page 30 - July 2014 - The Pulse

is a big non-no. Seems silly to say, but when we are distracted

with friends and family, these things can and will happen. Keep
hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Many people get sick from
mayonnaise that hasnt been kept cold enough. Dont get cheap
on the bags of ice to keep your food cold. A two-dollar bag of ice
can really save the day. Also: keep coolers out of the sun. Shade
can go a long way to helping your cooler do its job better.
Bugs: Dang, those little suckers are
EVERYWHERE! The recent rains after two years
of dry have brought them out by the billions.
Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes are everywhere. Avoid
areas where grass is high or a lot of leaf litter to
avoid tick bites and keep standing water changed
to avoid those mosquitoes. Some people are just targets for
bugs. If thats you, invest in a repellant that is at least 20 percent
DEET and if you are really worried, you can treat your clothing
with permethrin. Follow the directions on the label for best
results. After youve been outside, take a shower as soon as
possible and check yourself for ticks. Remove them with finetipped tweezers and treat the area with alcohol.

www.mypulsemag.com

Sun: Use a sunscreen of no less than a 15 SPF every time

you are going outdoors, even if you tan easily. The highest
increases of skin cancer are the folks who thought they were
exempt in their younger days. Wear a hat and sunglasses too
and avoid the sun midday (10 am -2 pm is the worst time of
day). Skin cancer is becoming a commonplace problem yet
very preventable. Pay attention for signs of sun stroke and heat
stroke. If you start to feel odd after time in the sun (woozy, chills,
sick at your stomach, dizzy), get under the shade and get (and
stay) hydrated. If its one of those 100 degree or better days,
make sure you keep everybody drinking lots of water. Not cola
or iced tea, just WATER, as caffeine can dehydrate you even
further.

house and even the sandbox is a dangerous place. Be sure to

keep sandboxes covered: they are nothing bit a big litter box to
local cats and your kids can get really sick from cat fecal matter
(toxoplasmosis). EWWWWWW.
When you are gardening, be sure to be aware of the sun, bugs
and allergens. If you are asthmatic, bring the inhaler along or
wear a mask to garden. Oklahoma is full of allergens - in big
quantities - and an attack can happen in the blink of an eye.
Keep the water changed in standing areas. Bird baths, planter
saucers and even little dips in your yard are a mosquitos best
friend. Dump out the water every 48 hours to make sure those
buggers dont keep breeding. Also: keep the grass down around
the house.
PAY ATTENTION: So many of us get too comfortable in

summer and thats when things get ugly. NEVER let your kids
set off fireworks unsupervised even sparklers are dangerous
(1,000 degrees!) and pay attention to what you are doing. Put
sunscreen on your kids even if you personally never touch the
stuff. Childrens chance of skin cancer goes up exponentially
after three good sunburns. If you are going to imbibe, have a
plan on where you can stay overnight or have someone you can
call to get you somewhere safe BEFORE you have your first sip.
Bug spray, clothing to cover, sunscreen and healthy food choices
with plenty of water can make summer safer. Enjoy!

HEALTH - SUMMER SAFETY

Water: most drownings happen in the blink of an eye

(10 seconds) and the victim doesnt even make a sound.
Good swimmers can drown too, so NEVER go swimming
alone, NEVER let your kids go into the water unsupervised
and remember that drinking alcohol and swimming arent
compatible. If you are swimming in the lake or a public pool,
be sure to get into the shower as soon as possible after getting
out. Many people get really sick from the water-borne bacteria
and germs in lakes and public pools. NEVER allow yourself
to swallow water, even pool water. Do us all a favor and dont
pee in the lakes or rivers either. Seems like a simple thing, but
people do it all the time. If your kids are swimming, make sure
they stay where you can see them and have little ones in brightly
colored life jackets. Dont get distracted by your phone or other
things either.

Happy Summer Safety Green Country!

Now, before you run out the door, be sure you get some of those
fried zucchini as a part of your meal (hey, fried zucchini is a
vegetable, right?), THEN suck down their incredible ice cream.
What we adore about this little gem is that we actually crave
Soda Steves and make every effort to eat there as often as our
waistlines and budgets allow. Try a Soda Steves burger and youll
be hooked for life. We actually got a bit depressed when they
closed for a bit after the season ended last year. Yep, its that
good.
Mods Coffee & Crepes, 507 S. Boston Ave, Tulsa,
(918) 582-6637
Mods doesnt offer ice cream, but they have the new Gucci
replacement, Gelato. While claiming to be lighter and less
fattening than ice cream, gelato is all the rage these days. Mods
Crepes in Tulsa offers it and having had theirs, we were very
pleasantly surprised at the lightness of it. If you are looking for
an alternative to the heavy ice cream, give gelato a chance. You
might be a bit sticker shocked, but it is good stuff. They also have
a few dairy-free gelatos for the allergy-prone. Be forewarned
gelato is not like ice cream: it doesnt come in a big tub: you get
a little dish and a teeny little spoon to eat it. Dont say we didnt
warn you.

arent too proud to do it either. We saw one guy that looked like

the other and never break a sweat. It was so cute but he probably

What more can a girl ask for than a good cup of coffee and
some ice cream? Caffeine, sugar and plenty of things we arent
supposed to eat every day are what make many of us want it
more. S&G has it in spades with all kinds of coffee tricks served
hot or cold with all kinds of flavorings, strengths, and alternatives
and of course, the ice creams to keep you coming back for more.
Prices are spectacular and they also have plenty of floats, sodas
as well as other dessert-y items if you just want a cup of joe and
a brownie or cookie. If Collinsville is far from home, dont forget to
grab a pound of beans to take with you when you go.

Chapters, 31 N. Main Street, Miami, (918) 540-0468,

www.chaptersmiami.com, Facebook
While not quite ice cream, Chapters has plenty of the frozen
coffee of the Starbucks variety, so youll feel your hair grow
while you indulge your sweet tooth and stay cool. You can add to
it with a variety of cookies, cupcakes and brownies if you really
feel the need for a sugar buzz while you read a good magazine
or peruse their books and gifts. Plenty at Chapters to keep you
busy on a hot summers day. They also offer plenty of flavors of
Route 66 Beer (not of the alcohol variety) with all kinds of yummy
flavors like Irish Cream, Cinnamon, Dulce de Leche, Strawberry,
Peach and Vanilla to name just a few. Add to that their ability
to keep you connected with wi-fi and daily specials, so check out
their Website and Facebook page for all they offer.

This years grocery favorite: GELATO!!! Yep, that special treat

that used to be only found at the fancy schmancy restaurants is
now at REASORS. And not only one or two brands either. Weve
tried three different brands and all were exemplary in taste,
consistency and uniqueness. None of them let us down once. We
also LOVE that gelato has the unique ability to satisfy with only
a little bit. One little scoop and we werent left feeling like we
wanted more, nor did we feel like we had been ripped off. It
definitely isnt for kids who want a big cone dripping with too
much ice cream weight to hold upright; this is for you after you
get the kids in bed and want a little selfish indulgence for yourself.
Many of the flavors arent particularly geared toward the kiddos,
but as with anything cold and sweet, theyll want it if you tell them
that they cant have it, so buyer be warned. Hide it in the cart and
then hide it in the freezer if you want it for yourself.

Pistol Pats, Highway 28, one mile from the Pensacola Dam

Dipcones, soft ice cream, sundaes, shakes, whatever you want,
Pistol Pats has a long list for you to pick from, so go with your first
gut reaction, because youll be back soon for more. Many go for
the dipcones and havent strayed from those since their first one,
so thats what were gonna suggest you go with. They have plenty
of outdoor seating under the shade while you cool off from the
inside out. They get plenty busy on the weekends, so be ready to
wait a few minutes - but we are pretty sure itll be worth the time.

Freddies Burgers and Frozen Custard, multiple locations in

Green Country, www.freddysusa.com
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we arent big fans of franchises either, but
when they offer us macadamia nuts for an ice cream topping, we
get quiet real fast and just eat it. They werent skimpy with them
either, so we like them even more. Locations in Owasso, Broken
Arrow and Tulsa with a new one in Muskogee (you lucky ducks!),
we like their food, but we love their ice cream. Were also going
to strongly recommend you grab a bottle of their burger spices
for to-go: this stuff works on dang near everything and is super
good to boot. That spice would flavor up shoe leather, me thinks.
Anyway, the ice cream is tasty, they do offer a nice topping choice
and the folks that work there dont seem unhappy about it, which
gives them a big thumbs-up from us.

Best part of a Princess visit is also that you can get a good meal
(consistently) and be sure that the ice cream will top it all off
nicely. It makes for a good kid bribe too, but theyll love their
meal. Better still, you can get just about any topping too. Get
there before summer says goodbye.

Recipe Corner:

Summer Recipes

This month we are paying homage to those quick to make dishes that are half grocery store cooked foods and the rest
at home. Weve also added some quick party recipes to help you host a neighborhood get together or impress the
family with something new.
Lets start with a suggestion: REASORS. Thats right, our pals at Reasors have all KINDS of premade dishes that
can save you a boatload of work and I even tried many of them before I gathered the recipes and havent been
disappointed. Head back to the deli and check out the Panera soups, their in-store baked breads and I strongly endorse their rotisserie
chicken and salads. Grab some baked or mashed potatoes and call it a day. If you arent quite in the mindset of buying everything
pre-made, we have some ideas for new sides and dishes you can make at home.
Mid-Summer Italian Bread
Salad
1 clove garlic
1 (1 pound) loaf Italian
bread
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup cucumber - peeled,
seeded and chopped
1 cup chopped red onion
1 clove garlic, minced
2 cups chopped fresh basil
1/8 cup chopped fresh thyme
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

DINING IN - RECIPE CORNER

Rub a peeled clove of garlic around a wooden salad bowl. Pull

apart or chop the bread into bite-size pieces. In the prepared
salad bowl, combine the bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions,
garlic, basil and thyme. Add enough olive oil and vinegar to
lightly coat, toss and serve.
Seven-Layer Dip
Serves 15 (can be served room
temperature, making this one
less thing to think about)
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
4 cups shredded CheddarMonterey Jack cheese blend
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
1 cup guacamole
1 cup salsa
1 (2.25 ounce) can black olives, chopped
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup chopped green onions
In a large skillet, brown ground beef. Set aside to drain and cool
to room temperature. Spread the beans into the bottom of a
9x13 inch serving tray that is about 1 1/2 inches deep. Sprinkle
2 cups of shredded cheese on top of beans. Sprinkle beef on top
of cheese. Spread sour cream very slowly on top of beef. Spread
guacamole on top of sour cream. Pour salsa over guacamole and
spread evenly. Sprinkle remaining shredded cheese. Sprinkle
black olives, tomatoes, and green onions on top. You can serve this
dish immediately, or refrigerate it overnight and serve cold.

Page 34 - July 2014 - The Pulse

BLT Dip
Makes 3 cups (tastes just like a
BLT, but if you use really good
crackers, chips or bread, you
will be the hit of the party)
1 pound bacon
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise (I used fatfree mayo/sour cream and no one seemed to know the diff)
1 tomato-peeled, seeded, diced
Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat
until evenly brown. Drain on paper towels.
In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise and sour cream. Crumble
bacon into the sour cream and mayonnaise mixture. Mix in
tomatoes just before serving.
Bacon Cheddar Deviled Eggs
Makes 24 eggs
12 eggs
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4 slices bacon
2 tablespoons finely shredded
Cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon mustard
Place eggs in a saucepan, and cover with cold water. Bring water
to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover, and let eggs
stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water,
and cool. To cool more quickly, rinse eggs under cold running
water.
Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat
until evenly brown. Alternatively, wrap bacon in paper towels and
cook in the microwave for about 1 minute per slice. Crumble and
set aside.
Peel the hard-cooked eggs, and cut in half lengthwise. Remove
yolks to a small bowl. Mash egg yolks with mayonnaise, crumbled
bacon and cheese. Stir in mustard. Fill egg white halves with the
yolk mixture and refrigerate until serving.
Easy, Healthy Hummus
Makes 16 servings (low-fat and perfect with pita chips, veggies or
even with bits of meat)
1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained, liquid reserved

www.mypulsemag.com

2 ounces fresh jalapeno pepper, sliced (optional)

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 cloves garlic, minced

4 (8-inch)whole-wheat tortillas (or use regular tortillas if you are

sneaking the healthy in)
2 teaspoon(s)canola oil,divided
1 ripe avocado,diced

In a blender or food processor, combine garbanzo beans,

jalapeno, cumin, lemon juice, garlic and 1 tablespoon of the
reserved bean liquid. Blend until smooth.

Combine beans, cheese, and 1/4 cup salsa in a medium bowl.

Place tortillas on a work surface. Spread 1/2 cup filling on half
of each tortilla. Fold tortillas in half, pressing gently to flatten.
Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
Add 2 quesadillas and cook, turning once, until golden on both
sides, 2 to 4 minutes total. Transfer to a cutting board and tent
with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining 1 teaspoon
oil and quesadillas. Serve the quesadillas with avocado and the
remaining salsa.

Summer Squash and White

Bean Saut
Serves 4

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees . In a large skillet, heat 3

tablespoonsolive oilover medium-high heat until rippling. Season
the beef with salt and pepper, increase the heat to high and
cook in the skillet for 3 minutes; flip and cook for 2 minutes more.
Transfer to a bowl.
In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1/4 cupolive oilover
medium heat. Add the peppers and onions, season with salt and
pepper and cook over medium high heat, stirring, until softened,
about 8 minutes.
Place the roll bottoms on a large rimmed baking sheet and top
each with the beef and vegetables; sprinkle with the cheese. Bake
until the cheese is melted, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a platter
and cover with the roll tops.

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion
and garlic and cook, stirring, until beginning to soften, about 3
minutes. Add zucchini, summer squash, oregano, salt and pepper
and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook, stirring
once, until the vegetables are tender-crisp, 3 to 5 minutes.
Stir in beans, tomatoes and vinegar; increase heat to medium and
cook, stirring, until heated through, about 2 minutes. Remove from
the heat and stir in Parmesan.
Note: We love the convenience of canned beans, but they tend
to be high in sodium. Give them a good rinse before adding to a
recipe to rid them of some of their sodium or opt for low-sodium
or no-salt-added varieties. Or, if you have the time, cook your
own beans from scratch.

year special as well as with cantaloupe, strawberries or even
apples. Use lowfat/fat free cream cheese if you are watching
your caloric intake.
