INDIANA STATE CHESS ASSOCIATION
FIDE International Master
Emory Tate the highest rat-
ed player in the State of Indi-
ana holds onto his title for
another year. With 5 State
titles under his belt, ranks
him with the great Lester
VanMeter which was who
he defeated in the last
round to maintain his
crown. Now, Emory knock-
ing on the door of tying
John Van Benton with three
consecutive titles and Denis
Gogel with six, no Hoosier
has ever won more than 7.
Can Emory do what it takes
to break the records? Is he
young enough or has he
reached his peak? As the
excitement builds this years
State will return to its birth
place of Logansport, no oth-
er location has held
more Championships.
Logansport History
article to follow. Tate
now working on his
GM Title, reaching his
International Master in
2006, is only three
norms away. Emory
made his way to Ice-
land at the Reykjavik
International in April to
compete for a norm.
He finished 4 points of
nine rounds just miss-
ing out. The 5 time
Armed Forces Champi-
on has his work cut out for
him. Keep up the great work
and make Indiana proud!!!!

We are winding up the summer and
moving into the State Championship
over the next three months. Time flies
when you are having Chess fun. In just
a couple of weeks the Masters/
Generations Championships will be at
the start gates, held at the Logansport
Mall. Compete in one of the Masters,
Senior, Amateur, or Junior Champion-
ship sections.
August will be time for the Indiana State
Class Championships in Kokomo at
the1166 UAW Local Union Hall. A very
nice facility on the north side of the City.
You will find a section of your own
strength to compete in. U1200 Begin-
ners can compete for Trophies or Cash
Prizes depending on entry.
Finally in September the Main Event,
turns to Logansport for its historic 24th
time. Glen Donley would be proud and
Donley Chess Center members are Hon-
ored to invite Indiana chess com-
petitors from all over the state.
Unsound Lines was not an idea of
mine but is derived from Wick
Deer when he was editor back in
the late nineties. He published a
couple of newsletters during his
office. Due to the shortage of pub-
lications over the past few months
the Board passed a resolution to
give discounted membership re-
newals to select members depend-
ing on expiration. I apologize for
the tardiness of the magazine. I am
not an Editor or Writer and the
newsletter is my best effort.

began, the first 19 years of the modern
series of State Championships, like we
see today, and a total of 23 Logansport
