- The purpose of the book of Proverbs is to create a king.

It takes a young son and teaches

him how to apply all of his parent’s teachings in order to become a king and rule.

- The context for Proverbs chapter 30 is the entire book of Proverbs.

- The book Proverbs starts with the introduction of the goal of the book.
Proverbs 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
Proverbs 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
Proverbs 1:3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
Proverbs 1:4 To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

- In the first nine chapters, of the book of Proverbs, a decision has to be made to either
follow the path of life or the path unto the dead; the path of the righteous, or the path of
the wicked.

- Also in the first nine chapters, we see wisdom and folly anthropomorphized in order to
see the contrast between the two, and we even see wisdom personified as Jesus.

- The first nine chapters address young men who are tempted to go with the wrong crowd
instead of the right crowd, get money the easy way, instead of the right way, and is a
strong warning against pride.

- In chapter 10, the Proverbs of Solomon, we get one or two verse parallelisms that are
very similar to the parables given by Jesus in the Gospels.

- Throughout the book, we see the young man being taught referred to as, “My son.” 23
times the phrase “my son” is used.

- Proverbs 30 starts out with the words of Agur, who realizes his fallen state, and that he
knows nothing. He acknowledges that he is a sinner and that he must put all of his trust in
the Lord.
I Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in
due time:
I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
- Different bible teachers disagree on weather Agur is Solomon or not. It is my belief that
Agur is Solomon.

Hebrew Hermeneutics
• Peshat: the literal, direct meaning.
• Remez: an allegorical significance; a hint of something deeper.
• Derash: the homiletical, or practical application.
• Sod: the mystical or hidden meaning.

- We actually see the upbringing of a king in the first 30 chapters of the book of Proverbs,
so that by the time we get to chapter 31, we see a king speaking. So what the book started
out to do in the introduction is accomplished at the end.
- As we read Proverbs from chapter 1 to chapter 31, we are seeing the making of a king.
Galatians Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant,
4:1 though he be lord of all;
Galatians But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
