Normal Tests on IP Modem

Since GRPS IP Modem is mostly used in remote sites, the stability of IP Modem is very
important.
Some simple tests before installing the modems to the sites are not enough. Widely used unstable
modems will cause big trouble for the monitoring system.
his is the modem stability test procedure. It will help you identify the modem performance and
stability in a short time.
1. Online Idle State Test
est reason! o test modem"s ability to maintain the established lin# itself. When there is no data
transmission, modem maintains the lin# with heartbeat. Modem can maintain the lin# as long as $
hour without dropping out or reconnection.
est method! %fter the modem is connected to the &ata Service 'enter(&S'), don"t send any data
between the modem and &S' to chec# how long the modem will maintain the connection. he
longer, the better. %t the end of the test, you should send some pac#ets between the modem and
the &S' to verify the idle lin# is still valid If neither of the modem nor &S' receives the pac#ets,
test fails.
2. DSC Close and Restart Test
est reason! &S' may be closed temporarily for the system maintenance, so we need to test if the
modem will recover connection after &S' recovers.

est method! *eep the the &S' closed for a short time, such as $ minute, and then restart &S' to
chec# if the modem will be reconnected +uic#ly. It"s should be less than , minutes. he sooner,
the better. %fter several times of test, the modem must be always reconnected to &S'. -therwise,
test fails.
3. Frequent Two-wa Small Pa!"ets Test
est reason! o test modem"s ability to send and receive small pac#ets fre+uently. his is how the
modem wor#s normally.
est method! Send a pac#et of $.. bytes every $. seconds from the modem and the &S'. est li#e
that for /. minutes and calculate if modem loses connection or suffers from data loss. he best
result is that neither of these two cases occurs. -therwise, test fails.
In addition, you can observe if much data loss or data received error occurs. If so, test fails.
ips! 0ou can ma#e pin 1 and pin / of modem RS1/1 shorted to ma#e it loop circuit. So you only
need to send data from the &S' to implement two2way communication .
#. Two-wa $ar%e &mount o' Pa!"ets Test
est! sometimes the modem need to transfer large amount of data. So we need to test if the modem
can handle it.
est method! Send a pac#et of $...bytes every 1 seconds from the &S' to the modem., as well as
from the modem to &S'. est li#e that for /. minutes and calculate if modem loses connection or
both ways suffer from data loss. In general, in the pressure test, modem may drops out and
reconnects or suffer from data loss. he reconnect times should be no more that $.. he less, the
better. If modem fails to be reconnected to the &S' after dropping out or two2way communication
fails after modem reconnects, test fails.
3esides, it"s normal for the modem to transfers data at a speed of /.. to $,..bytes4s. If modem
has a worse performance than that, test fails.
(. &ntenna )n*lu%%ed Test
est reason! In some sites, GPRS4GSM signal may get wea# temporarily. he modem should
reconnects after signal recovers and transfers data to &S'.
est method!
($) 5nplug the antenna for a short time. While the modem is online, unplug the antenna for $
minute, and send / pac#ets of $..bytes from the modem. %fter plug the antenna bac# , modem
should reconnects to the &S' +uic#ly and transfer the / pac#ets to &S'. he sooner, the better. If
the / pac#ets are lost, test fails.
(1) 5nplug the antenna for a long time. While the modem is online, unplug the antenna for /.
minutes. %fter plug the antenna bac#, modem should reconnects to &S' and ta#e less than $.
minutes to be reconnected. If it ta#es longer than /. minutes, or even longer, test fails.
+. Power-on Re*eat Test
est reason! Sometimes power failure would occur. Modem should be reconnected to the &S'
when power is on again.
est method! Power the modem 1. times. he modem should be connected to the &S' within 1
minutes each time. If modem fails to be connected to the &S' for one time, test fails.
,. Call and Messa%e Inter'eren!e Test
est reason! SMS message and call While the modem is connecting to the server and online
shouldn"t influence the modem.
est method! Power the modem and send two messages to the modem and call it twice in $.
seconds or so. he modem should be connected to the &S' as normal. %fter it"s connected, send
two message and call it twice, wait , minutes and see if it"s still online. %nd then send $. pac#ets
both ways to chec# if communication is -*.
-. SIM Card )n*lu%%ed Test. O*tional/
est reason! 3ad environment in the sites, such as vibration and corrosive gas may cause short2
time bad connection of the SIM card.
est method! 6irstly, when the modem is online, unplug the SIM card for / seconds and then plug
it bac#.to chec# if the modem will be reconnected to the &S' and if communication is -*.
Secondly, when the modem is online, unplug the SIM card for 7. seconds and chec# it again. If
modem fails to be reconnected to the &S' after SIM card is plugged bac#, installing the modem in
the sites with vibration and corrosive gas is not suggested.
0. Power Su**l Flu!tuation Test. O*tional/
est reason! 3attery or solar energy power supply in the sites may cause comprehensive power
fluctuation. Modem should be able to ad8ust to this fluctuation.
est method! a#e $19 &' for e:ample, there may be a voltage fluctuation from ,9 to $;9. When
the modem is connecting to the &S', #eep the voltage arranging between /9 and $79 to simulate
charge and discharge. It"s normal for the modem to reset to factory settings during the test. If
modem fails to be connected to the &S' after the power supply fluctuation, it"s not suggested to
install the modem in the sites with battery power supply.
11. SIM Card Owin% Fee Test.O*tional/
est reason! SIM card may become owing fee while modem is running. Modem should be
reconnected to the &S' after SIM card is available.
est method! Insert a SIM card owing fee in the modem and wait $. minutes. Modem won"t be
connected to the &S' due to owing fee. Meanwhile, call the SIM card number. 0ou will get a
prompt of out of service or restriction to call in. %nd then recharge the SIM card. 'all the SIM
card number again. If you hear it ringing, GSM service recovers. Wait $. minutes to chec# if
modem will be connected to the &S'. If modem isn"t connected to the &S' until reset the modem
manually, test fails.
11. DDNS Test.O*tional/
est reason! &&<S is used instead of fi:ed IP in some systems. &&<S may become invalid
temporarily. In this cause, we need to ma#e the test below.
est method!
($) Simulate an invalid domain. Point the domain to an invalid IP manually, and configure the
domain in the modem instead of fi:ed IP. In this case, modem will fail to be connected to &S'.
%nd then repoint the domain to the correct IP to chec# if modem will be online. he less time it
ta#es, the better. If modem fails to be connected to the &S', test fails.
(1)While the modem with domain configured in it online, unplug the antenna. Refer to the fifth
test(%ntenna 5nplugged est) to chec# if test passes.
(/)While the modem with domain configured in it online, refer to the second test(&S' 'lose and
Restart est) to chec# if test passes.
If &&<S test fails, it"s not suggested to use &&<S in the system.
