Jonah 1: Jonah's Disobedience

Jonah's Disobedience and Punishment
1
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2
"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their
wickedness has come up before Me." 3But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish
from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship
going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with
them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

The Storm at Sea

But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty
tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.
5
Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and
threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But
Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and
was fast asleep.
6
So the captain came to him, and said to him, "What do you mean, sleeper?
Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may
not perish."
7
And they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots, that we may know
for whose cause this trouble has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the
lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, "Please tell us! For whose cause is
this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come
from? What is your country? And of what people are you?"

So he said to them, "I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of
heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

Jonah Thrown into the Sea

Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, "Why have you
done this?" For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD,
because he had told them. 11Then they said to him, "What shall we do to
you that the sea may be calm for us?"--for the sea was growing more
tempestuous.
12
And he said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea
will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of
me."
13
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for
the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. 14Therefore they
cried out to the LORD and said, "We pray, O LORD, please do not let us
perish for this man's life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for
You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You." 15So they picked up Jonah
and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16Then the
men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD
and took vows. Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up
Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three
nights.

Jonah 2: Jonah's Prayer and God's Answer

Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish's belly. And
said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and
he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou
heardest my voice.---

 ‫نقرأ في مز ‪" 6 – 4 :18‬اكتنفتني حبال الموت وسيول الهلك أفزعتني‪ .‬حبال الهاوية حاقت بي‪.‬‬
‫أشراك الموت انتشبت بي‪ .‬في ضيقي دعوت الرب وإلى إلهي صرخت فسمع من هيكله صوتي‬
‫وصراخي قدامه دخل أذنيه"‪ .‬ونقرأ في مزمور ‪" 7 :42‬غمر ينادي غمرًا عند صوت ميازيبك‪ .‬كل‬
‫ظلمات في‬‫جب السفل في ُ‬ ‫ي"‪ .‬ونقرأ في مز ‪" 7 .6 :88‬وضعتني في ال ُ‬ ‫تياراتك ولججك طمت عل ّ‬
‫ي استقر غضبك وبكل تياراتك ذللتني"‪ ،‬وأيضًا في مز ‪" 22 :31‬وأنا ُقلت في حيرتي إني‬ ‫أعماق‪ .‬عل ّ‬
‫قد انقطعت من قدام عينيك ولكنك سمعت صوت تضرعي إذ صرخت إليك"‪ .‬وفي مز ‪" 7 :5‬أما أنا‬
‫فبكثرة رحمتك أدخل بيتك‪ .‬أسجد في هيكل ُقدسك بخوفك"‪ .‬وكان يونان عارفًا المزامير بل شك‬
‫واقتبس من كلمات هذه المزامير‪ .‬ويقول يونان في صلته "صرخت من جوف الهاوية فسمعت‬
‫صوتي" )ع ‪ (2‬هل كان يونان في جوف الهاوية أم في جوف الحوت؟ كان في جوف الحوت الذي‬
‫يشّبهه بالهاوية‪.‬‬
‫وقوله‪" :‬طرحتني في الُعمق والهاوية ثم أصعدت من الوهدة حياتي" ُيعّبر عن آلم المسيح وموته‬
‫وقيامته‪ .‬كما يقول في مز ‪" 11 .10 :16‬لنك لن تترك نفس في الهاوية‪ .‬لن تدع تقيك يرى‬
‫فسادًا ‪ُ ....‬تعرفني سبيل الحياة ‪ ." ...‬فهنا في ع ‪ 6‬يعّبر عن آلم نفسية مريرة تصّور آلم المسيح في‬
‫‪.‬ساعات الظلمة الثلث‬

‫‪So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.‬‬

‫‪Jonah 3: Jonah Preaches at Nineveh‬‬

‫‪Nineveh Repents‬‬
‫‪1‬‬
‫‪Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,‬‬
‫‪2‬‬
‫‪"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I‬‬
‫‪tell you." 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of‬‬
‫‪the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day‬‬
‫‪journey in extent. 4And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk.‬‬
‫‪Then he cried out and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be‬‬
‫"!‪overthrown‬‬

‫‪The People of Nineveh Believe‬‬

‫‪So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on‬‬
‫‪sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6Then word came to the‬‬
‫‪king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe,‬‬
‫‪covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 7And he caused it to be‬‬

proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king
and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste
anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8But let man and beast be
covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn
from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9Who can tell
if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we
may not perish?

Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and
He did not do it.

Jonah 4: Jonah's Anger and God's Kindness

God's Lesson to Jonah
1
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2So he prayed
to the LORD, and said, "Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was
still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know
that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant
in loving-kindness, One who relents from doing harm. 3Therefore now,
O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to
live!"

Then the LORD said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
5
So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he
made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what
would become of the city. 6And the LORD God prepared a plant and made
it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him
from his misery. So Jonah was very grateful for the plant. 7But as morning
dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant
that it withered. 8And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a

vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he grew
faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, "It is better for me to die
than to live."
9
Then God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?"
And he said, "It is right for me to be angry, even to death!"
10
But the LORD said, "You have had pity on the plant for which you have
not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a
night. 11And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are
more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot
discern between their right hand and their left--and much livestock?"

Notes: Jonah preaches to Nineveh 785? Jonah’s ministry ends 753.
Although the prophet Jonah tried to run away from God, God was in
control. By controlling the stormy seas and a great fish, God displayed his
absolute, yet loving guidance. The key verse in this story is 4:11.
Nineveh was the capital-to-be of Assyria – a great but evil empire – was
Israel’s most dreaded enemy. It is the state of Iraq now.
Jonah is a historical narrative. It is also mentioned by Jesus as a picture of
his death and resurrection (Matthew 12:38-42).

 ‫ما أعجب تنازل الرب لُمحاجة عبده يونان وإرشاده إلى الصواب‪ .‬كان أيوب مملوءًا من البر الذاتي‪،‬‬
‫ن يوصله إليه؟ إن هيبة الرب وجلله ُيرهبانه‪ ،‬ولسان‬
‫وقال إن عنده كلمًا يقدر أن يقوله للرب لكن َم ْ‬
‫حججًا‪ .‬فتنازل الرب وظهر له‬
‫حاله كأنه يقول‪ .‬لو يبعد الرب هيبته حتى ل يرهبني فأتكلم لملت فمي ُ‬
‫وأخذ يكلمه ويبّين له عظمته في الخليقة حتى وصل إلى النتيجة أن أيوب قال‪ :‬بسمع الذن سمعت‬
‫عنك أما الن فقد رأتك عيني‪ .‬يقول الرب‪ :‬أفل ُأشفق أنا؟ عجيب أن ينتهي سفر يونان بسؤال بدون‬
‫جواب‪ .‬لم يّرد يونان على هذا السؤال ولم ُيذكر في السفر إن كان يونان قد اقتنع ورّدت نفسه أم ل‪.‬‬
‫لكننا نعتقد أن يونان ل بد أن رّدت نفسه‪ .‬لقد استخدم الرب اليقطينة والدودة والريح الشرقية لجل رّد‬
‫نفسه‪ .‬وقد حاجج الرب يونان فهل وصل إلى غرضه؟ نعم بدون شك‪ .‬وأسوق على ذلك دليلين‪ -:‬الدليل‬
‫الول‪ :‬أن يونان كتب السفر إلى آخره‪ .‬متى كتبه؟ بعدما تّم كل هذا‪ .‬كتبه بوحي الروح القدس ولم‬
‫يكتبه إل بعد أن رجع يونان ورّد الرب نفسه رّدًا صحيحًا‪ .‬الدليل الثاني‪ :‬أن خطأ يونان هذا لم يذكره‬
‫‪.‬الرب في النجيل لكن تكلم عن يونان بكرامة‪ .‬صحيح أن يونان انحرف لكن الرب رّد نفسه‬
‫في نبوة ناحوم نقرأ عن القضاء النهائي على نينوى بالتفصيل‪ .‬ظن البعض أن الرب رحم أهل نينوى‬
‫وبعد ذلك عاد فقضى عليهم‪ .‬ظنوا أن أهل نينوى الذين تابوا‪ ،‬رجعوا عن توبتهم إلى أعمالهم الشريرة‪،‬‬
‫ولجل ذلك قضى الرب عليهم‪ .‬لو كان هذا صحيحًا لكان يتنافى مع قول الرب يسوع‪ :‬أنهم تابوا‬
‫ُبمناداة يونان‪ .‬وسيقومون في الدين ويدينون ذلك الجيل‪ .‬لكن الصحيح أن الرب قضى على نينوى كما‬
‫ورد في سفر ناحوم بعد مائة سنة‪ ،‬وفي خلل هذه المدة كان الملك الذي تاب وكل ذلك الجيل الذي‬
‫جاهم الرب من الهلك‪ ،‬كانوا قد انتهوا‪ ،‬وقام جيل آخر شرير‪ ،‬والرب قضى‬
‫تاب حتى الطفال الذين ن ّ‬
‫ط الرب فرصة للتوبة للجيل الثاني‬
‫عليهم من أجل شرهم كما هو مذكور في سفر ناحوم‪ .‬لماذا لم ُيع ِ‬
‫كما أعطى الجيل الول؟ الجواب‪ :‬هذه سياسة ال الُعليا وحكمته السامية تفوق أفهامنا‪ .‬عندما ذهب‬
‫يونان إلى نينوى لم يكن قد جاء الوقت الذي فيه يستخدم الرب آشور كعصا تأديب لشعبه إسرائيل‬
‫ولمصر ولبعض الممالك الخرى‪ .‬فالرب أعطى ُمهلة مائة سنة حتى جاء الوقت المعين‪ .‬عندما خرج‬
‫شعب إسرائيل من أرض مصر وصلوا بسرعة إلى أبواب كنعان وكان ممكنًا أن يدخلوا أرض كنعان‬
‫لكنهم أخطأوا في مسألة الجواسيس فأتاهم الرب في البرية أربعين سنة‪ .‬لماذا؟ يقول الوحي أن شر‬
‫ل‪ ،‬ولكن كان فيها سكان ول بد‬
‫الموريين لم يكن قد َكُمل‪ .‬كان الرب سُيدخلهم أرضًا تفيض لبنًا وعس ً‬
‫من إهلكهم قبل دخول شعبه إلى الرض‪ .‬يقول النقاد غير المؤمنين الذين يعترضون دائمًا على‬
‫أعمال ال‪ :‬لماذا يسمح ال لسرائيل أن يبيدوا سكان الرض ويسكنوا مكانهم؟ الجواب‪ :‬هذا قضاء من‬
‫ال عليهم لن مكيال شر الموريين كان قد َكُمل‪ ،‬فبدلً من أن ُينزل قضاء عليهم بواسطة النار كسدوم‬
‫وعمورة أرسل شعب إسرائيل ليقضوا عليهم‪ .‬فالرب لم يظلمهم لنه قد اكتمل مكيال شرهم‪ .‬وفي‬

ً ‫دخول إسرائيل في الوقت المعين تمم ال وعده لهم بإعطائهم أرضًا تفيض لبنًا وعس‬
‫نفسه قضى على الشرار الموجودين في الرض الذين قد اكتمل مكيال شرهم‬.
:‫ومن العجيب أننا نجد في سفر ناحوم الذي يذكر القضاء على نينوى بالتفصيل هذه الية العجيبة‬
‫( – ففي وسط‬7 :1 ‫"صالح هو الرب حصن في يوم الضيق وهو يعرف المتوكلين عليه" )ناحوم‬
‫ ونجد القضاء النهائي على‬.‫القضاء ل ينسى الرب المتوكلين عليه بل يعرفهم وهو حصن لهم ويحميهم‬
‫ ليمنحنا‬.15 .3 :2 ‫ وأيضًا في صفنيا‬،11 – 4 :3 ‫نينوى في باقي سفر ناحوم ل سيما في ناحوم‬
‫الرب نعمة لتكون دراستنا لسفر يونان ذات تأثير فّعال في حياتنا العملية ول نكون كمن رأى وجه‬
.‫ آمين‬.‫ وللهنا كل المجد إلى أبد البدين‬.!‫خلقته في مرآة ثم مضى ونسى ما هو‬

It is a great encouragement to hope we shall find mercy

with the Lord, that he is ready to show mercy. Do we
wonder at the forbearance of God towards his perverse
servant? Let us study our own hearts and ways; let us not
forget our own ingratitude and obstinacy; and let us be
astonished at God's patience towards us.
