PROJECT BACKGROUND
TheBright StarJunior School reaches out to children in the poorest areas of Diani, whose parents
are not able to pay for regular school fees or who are not letting their children go to school,

children to go to school by convincing their parents, who at times are ignorant on the importance

maintaining high quality education, given by qualified and experienced teachers, the school has
been able to achieve very good results, especially when taking the background of the children
into account.

CIVS/MLTV-15/14: MARIANNE CENTRE
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
People with a mental disability in Kenya (approximately 2.9 million) face particular challenges
in their lives. Many Kenyans still associate mental disability with black magic and witchcraft and
little has been done to combat this stigmatization. Most people with a mental disability have a
mild to moderate mental retardation. However, they can learn and are capable of developing
skills throughout their lives. The major shortcomings of the current educational system for
(young) adults with a mental disability is that they are too old to be enrolled in a primary school,
but mentally not capable to attend a normal secondary school. This why, Marianne center was
established in the year 2010 to focus on people with a mild to moderate mental disability from
the age of 16 until 50 years. Establishing a training center for this group has given them and their
parents hope for a better future. Currently, the centre has 38 students with disabilities varying

CIVS/MLTV-21/14: ROOF WATER PROJECT
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Roof Water Harvest and Sanitation Women Group registered in 2005. The organizations initial
aim was to empower women economically and socially enabling them to buy household goods
and tanks to harvest roof water. This was achieved through a Rotating Savings and Credit
Association referred to as a merry-go-round locally. The post-election violence of 2007 led to the
disruption of the organizations activities after several community members fled during violence.
However, the violence brought home to members the correlation between peaceful coexistence
and socio-economic development. In April 2008, members resolved to expand the groups
mandate and scope to include peace building and the organization embarked on conflict
resolution training, human rights and gender based violence sensitization. This was due to gross
human rights violation i.e. rape, killings, destruction of properties and displacement that were
witnessed during the violence. During the 2010 referendum, the organization took part in
providing civic education with the aim of deepening community understanding of the
constitution and enhancing peaceful coexistence within the ethnic diverse communities.
